Could anyone recognize this vise as well, and want to take a guess on size? My amateur guess would be Parker, partly due to color. I'm trying to contact the seller now.. The base is really interesting, looks like a thick stamped steel, could it be factory? It's far but I'm really tempted

I don't think Parker as the swivel base doesn't map. Color wouldn't enter into it as most vises were black back then.

I don't think it's a swivel base, to me it looks like a transition piece so you can mount it flat on a table instead of hanging over the front edge of a bench. But it's raised portion the vise sits on matches the tabs of the vise, has anyone seen a factory base like that?

Today's lil project. I bought this one some time ago and when I was going to clean it up I found a big crack around the steel slide in the dynamic jaw.... So when life hands you lemons ... Couldn't just scrap the whole thing so I turned it into a swiveling bench anvil... I've done a couple of these now but this one is the smallest and the first one that swivels. I fill the screw and slide cavities with lead to give them a bit more strength and weight.

The hub looks Rock Islandish for sure but the lip just over it looks Prentiss or Athol.
The chin looks Prentiss too.
Can't say for sure though...

Your right its not a swivel, - My bad. its a two piece base, so that bottom is the mounting surface and the slide support including the extended bit. I've see a few but can't recall who did it.

Still not like any Parker I've seen

I gave the American scale a quick ride in the blast cabinet to see what I had to work with. No other cracks, the rest of the vise is in great shape. Just this chunk missing. I've got an idea, but the rest of this will be for the repair thread.

Well, at least its not a bad job to do a proper repair......if you've a vertical mill, a friend who has one, or can borrow the use of one.

Just warm up that front jaw, build up the missing area by brazing, mill to align with existing surfaces, drill/bore the tapped hole suitably oversize, using the jaw steel as a jig for the hole location, and tap for a heli-coil......it will be good as new...... : )

(yes, I've done repairs like that....it really is easier than it might look)

I knew this vise had a chunk missing when I got it from drivesitfar, I was looking for a project to try out an idea I had for repairing jaw ledges.

Used a Woodruff key cutter in the mill to cut a groove where the jaw used to be, and cut a piece of steel to fit perfectly in its place.
I'm just drilled a few holes for dowel pins, then hard silver soldering it in place. Then use the jaw as you had said to align the hole, and drill and tap the new piece of steel.

Looks like an early Athol to me.

Picked up this nice Parker 384-1/2 nice jaws and the swivel jaw pin isn't stuck. The pins holding one of the jaws is sheared off as the jaw insert moves when I hit it with a rubber mallet. It needs a simple green soak after the anvil I picked up today is out of my simple green tank.

$100 was a deal in my book.

Here's a few recent finds. First is a Desmond Stephens Simplex 51P, steel slide, 5-1/4" jaws. Went to buy a Delta 17" drill press Thursday and asked "You selling any vises?" He pulled this out, pretty minty other than the surface rust, super nice jaws.
Then I went to a swap meet this weekend where I found the Reed 203. Drove me crazy, spotted it on Sat., but couldn't find the seller, went back 3 times Sun. AM and finally found him, at least the price was right, $25. Couple more items from the swap meet in the next post.

Couple more from the swap meet. First is a Stanley clamp on, 1-1/2" jaws, looks like original paint. Guy ahead of me picked it up, asked how much, "$10.", he offered $5, set it down when the seller didn't like his offer. I picked it up, handed him the $10 as he watched from about 5 ft. away. I think he was trying to decide if he should pay the $10. or not.
Then I found this anvil, or probably ASO (anvil shaped object). It's about 10" or 12" long, no markings of any kind I could find. Looking at the top, it's seen quite a bit of use, or abuse. But I thought it was cute enough to throw $25. Debating whether to try cleaning up the top and edges on the mill.

72: the jaws on this vise look a lot like Parker's jaws, but hard to tell from this one picture. the base looks homemade, but maybe it's a factory one. like TOP says it could be an Athol and i see some writing under the guy's hand if maybe Outlaw or somebody can see the writing better than i can with my old eyes and readers. I'd probably be on the road to at least take a peak at it in person or try to get some more picture of it from all sides and under the base without the sun's glare on it.

Vintage: Very cool looking vise and best of luck with the fix. moving the fix over the Vise Repair 101 thread to show how you repaired it or to ask more questions like Carla and a few others might be able to help you is also a good idea. best of luck and looks like a good project to do while it's raining in our part of the world these days.

It is (or used to be anyways!) a Prentiss 183, I believe

Question for the vise "re-sellers":

A friend of mine gave me this older Wilton Schiller Park era C3 to sell for him do to recent health issues. Other than some surface rust from sitting, it's in incredible condition, and actually, I don't think it's ever been used. There are no errant grind, hammer, or weld marks on it anywhere. And as you can see by the picture of the jaws, it doesn't look like it has ever even held anything. It has been sitting in a barn for about 30 years according to him.

Anyway, I'm going to probably sell it on Ebay to try and squeeze every last dollar out of it for him. My question is, should I just clean up the loose rust and sell it as it is, or take it apart and give it a full blown nut and bolt restore? Would the difference in the final selling price justify the labor of the restore?

The 3" is now matching with my 6"
Picked up some gold pinstriping paint for an upcoming project. Expensive stuff but it sure looks good!

These old Morgans are definitely nice vises. The small one is every bit as tight as the 3" Wilton that will be in line for restoration soon.

Interesting to note that the lettering is cast on opposite sides. Would have expected it to be the same on all of their vises

Kinda makes me wanna do one of my vises over.

It's some sort of dark green, is about the best I can do. Picked the chip out of the wall of colors at a local hardware store, and had them tint a can of rustoleum to match. Long since forgotten what it is.

I think it about 50% with lacquer thinner and apply with a brush.

This and black hammer tone seem to be the go to colors around here

I looked on your spreadsheet for a Columbian combination vise #30 wt. App. 65 lbs. Per a bathroom scale. I didn't see one.

Hi AKA, sorry, nothing personal, but Wilton, Yost, Columbian have a ton of made in China vises + all the other made in China copies out there, I am trying to keep it to NOT made in China. There may be a few exceptions, but do not recall at the moment.

What you have is a good vise, and being a Columbian, probably much better than most of the cheaper made in China copies. If I had a chance to buy one in the nice condition yours is in at a good price, I would buy it. Cheers
