New garage floor already chipped

Just had my 24x32 unheated garage built last summer. The concrete work looked to be top notch when poured and after it cured. However, after a long snowy winter the floor is heavily chipped up where the cars were parked.

The concrete guy offered to repair the spalling, but Im on my own to seal it against future damage. He says he informed me to seal it after it was poured, but I don't recall that. Anyway, I want to fix this correctly the first time.

He advised using some type of coating that will both seal and hide the repairs, but looking at the cost, Im not so sure I want to dump that much money into a garage floor. I may just find a suitable sealer for protection against hard winters and live with ugliness. It all comes down to cost.

So, can anyone recommend a budget friendly clear sealer that will hold up to freezing and road salt? Any durable but cheap version of the pretty epoxy coated sealers? Anything that gets me a happy in-between? Im probably looking at a DIY solution regardless of the coating so high marks for a dummy proof sealer.

Thanks

Hi
Once your floor is repaired we would suggest a coat of our SPGX one part polyurea/polyaspartic coating. This is a very high performance coating that is extremely resistant to salt and automotive fluids.

Cost will run about $.50 per square foot which is much less than an epoxy system but will give at least 10 times the performance of something you can buy at home center. It is also available in a pigmented version instead of clear at a somewhat higher price. One of the main advantages of SPGX is it's resistance to chemicals and salt.

Please email us directly for technical and installation that out and let us know your square footage and we can get you a price including the Garage Journal discount.

The one trend I'm seeing is a lot of people want CHEAP but good products. If you find one let me know! The old saying of you get what you pay for keeps popping up in my mind. Do it right the first time and spend the extra $$$.

ARMORPOXY - How long should the concrete cure before applying your product? Will it has to be ground off if I want to add a different coating later?

Thanks!

About 30 days minimum. Always test first using clear plastic test as some concrete can take longer.

No it won't need to be removed if recoated just scratch it up a bit and clean and recoat.

Afternoon Armorpoxy,

Don't mean to hijack, but have a similar question. Can you put the SPGX over an epoxy? I have the Rustoleum professional version down for about 5 years, no pealing or issues, but it has taken a beating and is a bit dull. Could I use that product to bring some shine and add a tough coating over the top?

Hi,
We have not tested SPGX over someone else's coatings so we would need to get you a small test qty to assure no issues, that's the only way. We don't recommend using SPGX outdoors or on a garage apron, thanks.

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong product on your website but it works out to be well over a $1/sqft. Is SPGX = Armor Ultra?

With color and reasonable safety factor that could be correct. Thank you.
