Picked up this Bonney, Hercules just because it has the same kind of con-caved I-beam slide like my little Wilton Scout has, and both have stationary Dynamic jaws.---Not big on open screw or stationary but I make exceptions.

Here a few before and after pics of a Rock Island 542-BX I recently purchased, repaired and cleaned up a bit. I plan on posting a thread on the whole process when I have some free time. BTW anyone have any idea on how the damage on the jaw occurred? My best guess is a carbon arc? d5155fa01efb66114cef0953dfcd7975.jpg2a4a86dbcbb2519fd90f89425075b88d.jpgefacaf0844f2e8bd62afdfe0fd6c76ed.jpg7ef32d1af4084a3a2dbd4683343dd241.jpg0f253021366d6b8a282674d59548cdbe.jpg556825d197973e561ec481b131e5ac3a.jpg

Dinoperson, not sure if anyone got back to you....it is an Austin 380A

ok great.. he mentioned it might of been a parker.. good looking out on the jaws. i guess ill save my money .. he was asking quiet a bit

He's asking $350 for it. If it is just missing the jaws, not cracks or welds on it, I would go for it. For me it is about a 12 hour round trip, otherwise I would check it out. It has been there for a couple of weeks, he might take $300 or even $250.

Even at $350 (CDN) + jaws and cleaning it up, you would have an 8" Parker (It is a Superior BTW = heavy duty) for $500 to $600. I think you would be hard pressed to find another 8" all fixed up for that kind of money....again, CDN. Any other 8" will be on eBay for 35% more in US funds plus shipping.

Of course you could find a Wilton 8" for $300, some people do :wtf:

Looks like those jaws are rock hard and something like a hammer hit the jaw tops or something was grabbed at the top and caused them to shatter like glass. Check to see if a sharp file will bite if so then the jaws are softer then I think. A file will skid over hard steel above 56 Rockwell. That is what it looks like to me. If it is soft then anyone's guess and could be a carbon arc but it would have gouged the casting.

If you want a drawing of your jaws then PM me if you want to make a set. The jaw drawing I have shows goofy sizes 5/8 x 1.460 x 4.425 wide.

Good day,

Any of the vise thread folks out there own both a Parker 60 and 60X, and can comment on commonality of parts between them?

Thrumcap
:canada:

I would love to say I owned both, unfortunately I have no 8" whatsoever :(

I can tell you that a Parker 60 is an Eclipse weighing in in the mid 240's, here's one by Demo
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2278858&postcount=4088

The Parker 60X is a Superior and weighs about 20 or more pounds. Both great vises with the 60X being a bit heftier. Maybe Kevin could comment on commonality of parts, I know he often mentions the jaws do not have the same fit any 2 seemingly identical Parkers. Maybe the rest could be interchangeable....are you looking at the same vise as Z3K3Y?

Yep. I called the guy couple days ago...i have put in a request for specific photos. The grey veil of uncertainty must be lifted.....

Meatsis and I are comparing his 60X against my 60..... for science!

I found a spare parts list from Parker, from after their factory burned...only the new Superior and Superior had parts available, the other lines' patterns were destroyed.

New Superior:808
Superior:60X
29 Line: 60
X Line: N/A
O Line: 6

Dr. Scott are you still messing with Parker jaws?

I thought he backed off of those, but even if so, maybe he's willing to come out of "retirement" for 8" of Parker?

Kevin,
I stroked a high quality file over the lower jaw edge of my Hollands 44-1/2 the other day. It skidded like a hickey puck on ice.

Fortunately my jaws are in very fine shape as they are original smooth faced and forged (is drop forged proper process terminology here ?).

Yes you're right. But the 978 has a swivel base, which adds over 50 lbs on an 8"er. A 300 lb stationary vise is quite large. [emoji106]
Indeed! Was certainly not trying to say it is small :) But someday I would like to see one of those 10"ers that are around 450# IIRC

All the 8" jaws I built have been different, angles depths and inside boss width. I have not caught up yet on this fast moving thread but if you purchase used jaws then I would be very leery thinking they would fit another vise. All Parker jaws are stamped with the same number as the casting under neath the jaws. so if the numbers are far apart then the new form cutter they changed to will be different.

Dr. Scott are you still messing with Parker jaws?

Nope still building Parker jaws, I only backed off of building jaws for a Parker vise I can not touch. Making two sets now, both for a Parker 439, one from Detroit other from Kansas and they are both different, actually I thought it would be a quick jaw build since the set ups take as long as the cutting but **** these are so different it will be more confusing to fit, gotta think what angle's I am working with. Need to set up the Bridgeport 8" sine plate to rough out the jaws but before this project I cut two casted in jaws from a Hollands and a Reed 103 to fit new L jaws. Did them today, steel still warm. I found out by cutting that the serrations were around 60 Rockwell but after .04 of serration removal the steel was easier to remove. This tells me that the jaw faces could have been case hardened. Case hardening gives a very hard surface for about .03 to about .06 deep of hardness and the steel behind the case hardening is what gives strength for compression. Some day we will dig up a article on the steps for casted in jaws. These will confuse the vise collectors down the road, fitting Starrett jaws on both of these non swivlers. Making drawings of the Reeds backlash nuts in case someone wants to make them.

Heres a COLUMBIAN 503 1/2 M2 I picked up at a sale for $20. Cleaned up real nice once I removed the orange paint the previous owner slapped on it.

What a little gem! I really wanted this vise in my collection and I'm thrilled to have it in my hands! You might have seen it on eBay. The guy wanted $2,500 for it! Ha! What a joke. Of course it didn't sell at $2,500. I even wrote him an email and offered $500 for it to which he responded. "NO". So when it came back for sale on eBay at $250 (I think was the opening bid) I was all over it...long short I won the auction at $280. I wonder if the guy put 2&2 together...

HA!!! I emailed him when he had it at 2500 asked if he put the decimal in the wrong spot. Or if he was really asking $2500 for this vise.
His response was "find another one for less"

I'm sure it was something I did. I'm not a computer guy. Let me ask my wife to try it.

FMC1959: Thank you sir for the props

Kevin: thank you for the offer I may take you up on that. I only have a small mill available to me at work that I have very little experience with, but I figure this would be a good learning experience to try to make a set of jaws from some bronze. But I have noticed that you make jaws for this as well which are beautiful, so if these steel ones let me down I will be a seeking out a nice new set from you.
BTW: I ran a file across these and they don't appear to be hardened

Crotalus - that is a Bonney Champion #127.
It's missing the base plate, heavy washer, and winged nut.
Otherwise it's in great shape. The original color should be red.

Thanks for the advise, it is kind of not the priority at the moment. I do believe it should have some kind of service plate on the end to cover the screw, it is missing. Were the handles on these just steel with ball ends of did it have a rubber insulator too?

I do believe that is I mounted it on my bench it would knock it over...also I haven't figured out the swivel jaw piece. It would be great if I could find a breakdown on it
JP

Pucman: if you'd like to just take off the swivel's base and mount your wilton swivel jaw to a bench using the two holes that would work. or build a stand for it and mount the vise for 360 degree access. or find or make a replacement swivel's base which a machinist could probably make by using your broken one as one to copy. also a machinist in your area if you know one or several members make handles you can buy if you can't make one yourself.

post up your fixes on the Vise Repair 101 thread and here's the link.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252830

VISES: it's good to have a little steel and some talent to make a nice stand isn't it? WELL DONE!!

Honza: that hammer head looks a bit bigger than normal so i'd check that vise out in person. it hasn't been on that wood outside long or maybe he just put in new bolts. i can't figure out the maker, but guessing the jaw width is 5 and maybe 6 inch?

I threw in a token bid on that 402 1/2 ... have a pow-r-arm to put it on that would have made the broken base moot. But figured prices would get ridiculous, pretty surprised it went for as low as it did.

I bid on it too but I didn't go higher than $30
