Well, as confession is good for the soul I have to admit that lacking Smoke's restraint and having better timing than Rileysan I ended up buying this stack. Both top and bottom are a bit of a project for sure but have fairly good potential. Here is a pic of some socket rails someone had stuck on the outside of the top box. Not sure I've ever seen this done before and will have a few holes to patch because of it. At least it is complete except for missing one oval craftsman badge. I'm rearranging some boxes in one area of the shop to make room for it... Ed.

Now that was a working man's box for sure. I've never seen rails on the side like that either, but it makes some sense for a one man shop...

nice of you to get the boys riled up and then talk yourself into buying it. if you run out of time cause you might have a few projects it sounds like a few of the local guys might be willing to trade you something for them.

I really don't know who made these for Craftsman either but they are pretty stout boxes. (On edit thanks smokeshow for identifying the manufacturer). This is the second chest I've had and they must have produced the style for several years as my other one has the crown top logo in a different location. It holds lathe tooling mostly and sits under the chip pan on my old 12 x 5 Hendey. (Pic below)

Now that was a working man's box for sure. I've never seen rails on the side like that either, but it makes some sense for a one man shop...

It definitely belonged to a working man who didn't mind modifying his tools so they would work to his advantage. I can appreciate his thought process in keeping his tools at hand as well. I may just leave them on. Ed.

Here is a pic from inside the drawer in where you can make out the AMD name stamped in behind the craftsman logo. I knew it said something there but couldn't make it out until I got a pic and enhanced it. I'm not sure but it could be the date stamp on the left side. I can't tell if it's a 56 or a 66 stamped there though. Ed.

Just an FYI any boxes made by amd will be date stamped behind the logo . My remline is and if you check yours you will be surprised to find the year of manufacture there

I also have one of these AMD boxes though a smaller model. Mine is clearly stamped 55. The Craftsman catalog image also confirms 1955 to be the correct year.

Great roller cab you have there Brad. Much better use of the space to have extra drawers than just an empty box in the bottom. Your 55' date stamp looks good too. I don't doubt that's what I've got as well. 55' is fine with me....just a bit older than I am. Ed.

Thanks Ed. This was a genuine barn find that set me back a cool $20. I've since wet sanded and clear coated it and with paraffin on the rails, works like new. I wished I had the larger top box like yours but other than that, this one does me just fine.

Smoke: i think with those handles on your brother's snap on box you are around 1950. i'm not certain where to look for a date or maybe some of these guys just know them in their memory. or maybe they made them. anyway this repainted Snappy roller I own was dated for me at 1950 so guessing yours is close to that. the darker picture is the same box (I think) and the light blue might have something to do with the sunshine in Seattle cause when it finally does come out it's really bright.

I agree Snap On box is ball park late 40s early 50s. Date codes on boxes didn`t start til mid 1950s.

Not to be outdone, I picked this vintage Craftsman roller up after work today. Was listed on CL for just a few hours. $125. I didn't hesitate as it's in as good of condition as the pictures appear.

Of course I don't need it! However, it's the proper match for the 10d top chest I picked up last year - for which I owe you much gratitude!

It was located in an easy on/off I-5 locale. The casters are not original but are really nice and heavy. The seller stated he purchased it ~15 years ago from an automotive shop in Portland. He cleaned it up really nice but had to replace the casters because the old ones were worn out. He is a finish woodworker and loves vintage tools and boxes. He had a really nice 60s vintage Snap-on roller and top chest that replaced this one. I enjoyed my short visit with him.

Brian, how did you score this? I check our clist multiple times a day for craftsman in our area because I would like to find a 519x vise and did not see this posted! Well done! I have the older version of this roller with the heritage logo that was made by Pressteel but yours is made by AMD (advertising metal display company). Looks to be in fantastic shape!

That's a late 50s top box. Check the 1957 or 58 Snap-On catalog online. I have the matching bottom.

That's a great box. Nice pick up!!!

I have a 1960 top box/roller combo and I think they're one of the best boxes around. My Remlines are my regular use boxes.

I will call it dumb luck. I rarely search for the word "Craftsman" but I did yesterday. It wasn't listed under tool box, chest, or otherwise. It was only up 4 hours when I found it and was still listed at 8pm last night.
