My 120lbs wife was pounding 2 steel pegs in soft grass and the hammer blew apart.

My dealer said they wont warranty it?
The pegs were 3/4" round flat top. If the dead blows cant hold up to her using it i don't want another one anyway i guess.
But I was kinda surprised with my dealers response.

I lost the exact same model in a similar fashion (maybe it's the orange?).

I was surprised at the lack of durability, I've had much cheaper dead blow hammers stand up to much more abuse.

your dealer is full of poop, I've seen a dozen of those warrantied here, no questions asked. That's their old style handle, at least 10-15 years old. Last one my brother had warrantied was so sun faded didn't even look orange anymore. Find another dealer or call snap-on. Hell send it to me and I will send u a new one.

Have you started calling your wife She-Hulk?

Maybe our resident hammer specialist would know what happened here.

Did you notice it cracking or anything prior to the hammer-splosion?

I have had a couple do that. My dealer couldn't hand me a new one fast enough. 100% warranty as far as my experience.

Wow. Seems like junk :0 and that's BS, if my dealer wouldn't warranty a tool that MY wife broke, I'd be walking away from that business relationship.

As previously mentioned - Call it in - You'll have a replacement in the mail promptly.

If they want a photo just refer them to this thread.

I've read about SO dead blows falling apart so instead of buying them I went with trusty Cook.

Call Snap-on. I had a friend warranty several for me and I sent two in a year or two ago for no questions warranty. One was discontinued and the lady upgraded to a larger version of the other one I sent in.

Sounds like you have a dealer problem, not a hammer problem!

If your dealer was worth a ****, this thread wouldn't exist.

This style of Snap on was well known for shattering. The newly updated ones (3-4 years ago? Maybe a little longer than that) are supposed to have solved that, but time will tell.

Urethane degrades over time it's simply the nature of the chemistry. This isn't uncommon. It happened when Stanley owned Com-po-cast and it's going to happen to Trusty-Cook's, Snap-On's, Harbor Freight's and anybody else's urethane hammers in due time. The condition this occurs most frequently on is called white death. When the hammer starts to turn white this indicates that the hammer will soon fade.

Too funny.

TC used to be the OEM for Snap On deadblows, and I'm pretty sure they made the orange ones that fell apart. However, if your hammer is that old and says TC, it is garbage, whereas if it's a Snap On, you can get a warranty on it.

Snap On is now making the red/black ones in house, and I have not heard or had any trouble with them, though I did manage to get the head of a 56oz one to separate from the handle internally (it wobbled, but would did not fly off) by beating the living snot out of it. Had no trouble getting that replaced too.

My understanding is that TC's formulation has changed since then too, and is more stable over time.

They will do direct warranties on those I've done it. As stated that can happen with any dead blows but it's been said on here before that the orange ounces were really bad because the EPA at that time had just laid the smack down on rubber and plastics manufacturing or certain sectors.

I've seen breakage of lots of rubber/plastic USA stuff from that time period, casters etc.

absolutely call snap on directly if your dealer wont help you. I had two of the old orange handle dead blows, they had started cracking years ago. Literally sitting in my box cracked for like 5 years but I called snap on last year I think after seeing people get theirs warrantied on here. Called them up and now I have two of the newer red/black hammers in my tool box. Warrantied them no questions asked - in fact the person I talked too seemed to know exactly what hammers and what happened to them about two words into the conversation.

I don't mean to be rude, but I don't think you're supposed to be pounding in steel stakes with a soft faced dead blow. Just sayin'.

Uses wrong tool, something goes wrong, blames tool

Nope his wife did. No need to take away his man card.

It's a hammer and I'd say is it a disposable one no matter the brand it's soft face. So technically it just another consumable.

Those hammers grenade just like the HF orange ones. This winter I broke all 4 of my dead blows and a newer snappy ball pein they are all covered by warranty...

It was probably going to fall apart anyway, but using a soft face dead blow to pound in a steel stake just sped up the process. Soft face dead blows prefer to be impacted with large flat surfaces.

I agree but my wife is not a beast and we have had a wet spring here, the grass sinks just walking on it. So if any dead blow cant hold up to her tapping a steel stakes into the ground 4"..... im sorry its pure junk!

Now if i was pounding stakes in cribbing a basement ... you bet i would even make this thread.

:lol_hitti That's great

I know that's just a plate carrier. But one thing, I never understood the point of wearing a real BP vest if it dosent cover you gut. And not just in this pic but I see it all the time on the streets. Is it due to the mobility cost etc???

They are cut high on the waist so that when you are sitting in your vehicle, which is 60% of a cops day the plate isn't digging into your legs, duty belt, and "nightstick".

Your driver sounds like a dink. Its a problem with that generation of urethanes. A have a ball pein from that generation (new off truck) that Im waiting for this to happen to so I can get a new one. They can chip and go brittle. He should be warrantying it no questions asked. Do you have any sort of relationship with him? Are you on a route? Not that it should matter, but maybe hes thinking this was a "yard sale / ebay" "Lifetime warranty" special and not giving you the service you deserve?

Anyways, best option might be to call SO and report the driver and get your warranty that way. This should be 100% covered.

Ive never had one break it sounds like a common problem though, should be warrantied.

ive only had one bad snap on dealer, it was when i first started out, at the time he was doing very well. He even charged me to replace broken torx bits. In my field you will break a t27 every couple of months even when babied. Guy was a total ****. I moved on to a few different shops. Years later i run into him again, apparently he was even poaching on another guys area, it was sweet to see him desperate and begging people for business. Usually doesnt work that way but it was nice to see him taste some karma
