Re: Possibly a 1892 pat. Lewis Tool Post Mount Swivel DYNAMIC JAW and Swivel Base.

The only markings on it that I can see at this point are "pat may 31 1892", but I believe this to be an error... I thinks it is actually supposed to read "Jan. 5 1892" referring to a Patent by M.G.Lewis, New York, New York. This Patent refers to the locking mechanism that holds/releases the SWIVELING DYNAMIC JAW, however the patenet drawing demonstrates it on the rear jaw, the mechanism is at issue, not the position, imo. This is a "post mount" bench style vise which also has a swivel base with a some what odd spring loaded pull-knob at the release/lock. The jaws are 4" wide and it weighs 56#'s...

All of the above is a guess and I would welcome any and all info, corections, statments and or B.S.!!! Thank you in advance, I love this site!

Could this be from 1844? The collar is marked 11-22-44.

The numbers look like they could be either to my eyes, I'd highly doubt it's from 1844 though, doesn't look nearly old enough to me

Interesting info on the Parker #22. I am working on one now. The collar date is 11-25-1887. Here is a picture of that collar:

And the side of the static has cast lettering.

Looks like they made some improvements over time.

Hmm, I'm not having any luck on the other patent date. Here is a list of many, if not all Parker patents, (all types)

Nov, 22 1844 and 1914 is skipped... (The 44 date makes no sense; it would have been the 2nd known pat. Parker ever had?)

Other 1914 dates (assuming a "misprint") aren't for this vise?...

Outlaw it's definitely stamped 44.

I have one of the 11 22 1910 Patent date vises. Also if it was a post 1900 vise, i'm fairly certain it would say Parker on it.

Parker made vises for others without their name. Usually the number would change, but not necessarily.

Both dates are dead ends so far...

Oh yeah I remember that Parker you restored. Probably my favorite. I want to see if I can adapt a newer style swivel base to it.

Will the Parker base you have work? I was looking at it a couple days ago. Here is a drawing I made for the 22 and maybe the one you have will work. Need to create a boss on the Static that is threaded I would be happy to help with the shoulder bolt. The base would take some time that I do not have and the static needs a mill to create the boss.

Here is a base that will work, although I need to find another one because this one is off my 433-1/2. I think I can just drill out the center of the base to accept the boss that's already on the vise to keep it centered. Then I can grind the boss a hair proud than flush and toss a bolt in it. What do you think?

Looks like that will work if the diameters match. The static base needs machining to rotate on center and rotate smooth. The boss also needs to be round and not a rough casting like what I did on my static.

To bad I was not still living in Poughquag NY, I could help you on this. This stuff is fun work. I have a handfull of 2" and smaller clamp ons that will eventually get swivel bases made for them. I think a small Stanley will be a sweet small vise with a swivel base.

ALL: look what followed me home today!! Prentiss #5 with 6 inch jaws (yes the back one should swivel and will as soon as i want it to) and a non swivel base. other than a few vise grip marks on the swivel jaw's pin and a little bend in the handle is looks like it's in great shape. also this one doesn't have a crack in the slide and the slide looks actually thicker than most. i'm guessing it weighs about 130 pounds, but that's only a guess cause carrying it in one piece was doable, but i wouldn't want to run around the block with it.

this vise i'm guessing is early 1900's cause of the #, but more so because of the jaws. did maybe Prentiss vise company make the first hardened steel jaws insert into their casts prior to Reed's?

I went to pick up this American Scale vise today. I don't normally buy these vise/anvil combos but He had it posted for $40 and it wasn't a far drive for me. I was pleasantly surprised when I got there and saw this sweet little Parker sitting next to it. Still has the original paint on it. Paid $60 for the pair

Here are all the patents reported in 1844. Remember that at that time they used the "Vice" spelling. There appears to be only one patent during that year for a vise by Mr. Peck, #3670 for a post vise.

EDIT: I searched the entire 1844 document for the terms screw, retain, clamp, vise, vice, collar, slide, grip, handle, etc. I couldn't find anything relevant. But, it sure looks like "44" to me forged into that collar.

I have two Prentiss's (or is it Prenti?) vises with the cast in jaws like your #5.

On 6 Jun 1911, Charles D. Bingham was assigned patent #994240, which he assigned to The Prentiss Vise Company, for screw in steel faced jaws of the "u-channel" design.

Your #5 pre-dates the 1911 patent.

Am going to cite the Google reference first. USPTO will not display the patent for me - it claims I need an updated plug-in to display it. Perhaps your plugs-ins are more up to date than mine.

You may not find it "spectacular", but a heck of a nice collection. All quite nice and unique, I would be very happy withe that lot of vises.

Picked up this 6" American Scale Red Seal. I think it is #66. It is soaking so I will get a better look at it tomorrow. I will be getting new jaws from Kevin. Does anyone know when this was made?

The American Scale Co. was in business from 1910 to 1960.

I'm a big fan of FPU & Bison-Bial vises. The FPUs seem as hard to find as hen's teeth. How large is yours?

Thanks Mark FPU is a 6" only the third one I have seen, second I owned. Its jaws are beat up bad. I just ordered my jaws for the American Scale from Kevin. Easy guy to do business with. Very helpful.
