Newest addition to my modest collection

Many thanks to CrotalusAtrox who did such a fine tune up on this low mileage Craftsman 5191

So has anybody seen something like this old guy before? It has been on Craigslist for quite a while. At first I thought it was welded, but upon further inspection I think it may be a factory cast? Anyone? 8124aa68bf30245e1ae2a574b9de036e.jpg33df99d01d1ba44a1e48f1797e1883bb.jpg

I made a few improvements in my #22 Parker. It was a fun restoration. My collar is different then the Jims and Veeps. Mine used to swivel with the large handle under the work bench like Outlaws ad and Veeps vise. I had a little time and whittled out a custom base and brake lock set up.

Kevin, another jaw dropper!! Nobody but nobody gives us so much of the unusual as you do.

I've found an AJAX UNBREAKABLE, looks like a FORTIS, on page 362, post 7237----and an AJAX STEEL on page 1376, post 27507, but your Bonney is a first for me.:eyecrazy:

For all you 5197 lovers...i spoke to the seller tonight. He confirmed the # on the nose. I also told him to check the jaw support for cracks. Expensive but I think he'd take 300, but dont quote me. I softened him up a little for guys.

https://boston.craigslist.org/nos/tls/6126178066.html

Good luck!
Well the jaw support is cracked. I told him to check it last night. If anyone wants one to repair or for parts nows your chance.

Looks like that will work if the diameters match. The static base needs machining to rotate on center and rotate smooth. The boss also needs to be round and not a rough casting like what I did on my static.

To bad I was not still living in Poughquag NY, I could help you on this. This stuff is fun work. I have a handfull of 2" and smaller clamp ons that will eventually get swivel bases made for them. I think a small Stanley will be a sweet small vise with a swivel base.

I think I can make it work. Any tips on drilling cast iron?

Drills like butter, right before breaking through lighten up on the quill and maybe slightly tighten the quill lock so the bit does not grab. One thing to remember you have to know the center dimensions of the pivot pin and the tapered lock. The pivot pin is supported by the Static base and the lock down has to center over the brake lock to work.

I thought some of you may be interested in this "contraption" vise made by the Chicago Flexible Shaft Company, out of which came Stewart-Warner and which also ultimately became Sunbeam of the appliance world. Be sure to click the link from which the picture of the vise came as it is for sale at a NY auction in July. Here's a link to my write-up with thanks to Joel for turning me on to it.

If memory serves, I believe I snagged that down your way at the flea in Waynesboro, VA.

On a related note, I'm really interested in other Bonney vises like mine, particularly the monster in this photo on my site.

TJ & Meatsis: thanks for the Kudos on my Prentiss #5 and still wondering where to put it even to store it so it's still riding around in my Honda. i don't think i'll hang it from a 2x6 like Twertsy is doing with some of his, but that is an interesting idea at least for the little ones.

JKB: great links on the Prentiss jaw patent in 1911 and i kinda thought my #5 was early 1900's. i've got a year old Dell laptop and i can't open that other link either, but I haven't filled up my laptop with a bunch of programs either so maybe i need to. THANKS

Twertsy: interesting way you store your vises and if you get into vises as much as you do hand tools i know your collection will be even more AWESOME in the future.

Shift: i picked up a nice old VERSA VISE from CA and he's a great guy. i know he's got a ton of great vises, but i bet he still didn't want to let that one go. looks like it found a good home so take care of it. have you had a 519x vise before? it's one of my favorites and maybe one of the best built vises for it's size ever made and wondering if you feel the same way. do you?

BRETT: you and i shop at some of the same stores so to speak and i've seen that Presto vise on there for a while now. your pictures are a lot nicer than the ones in his ad, but i still think it's weld built up on the static's jaw. i just passed on a big REED 4C that had a similar static welding look, but i almost drove 10 hours for it just because i like or should say i LOVE BIG REEDS.

ALL: any progress on the REED 209 or was that a mis print?

i'm still trying to build up vise and tool funds after paying for a wedding, but i'd donate maybe an old kid for that one.

cheers

I must be an idiot! Can anybody please explain why this house sold for so much money?

Wow! I've seen that happen a number of times, but not usually with anything quite that common. There's one guy on eBay who prices his stuff really high, and they always seem to sell....it's like he's getting traffic from somewhere else that has an audience willing to just pay what he's asking.

I'd like to figure out how he's doing that!

GMAN: thanks for posting that. OMG i feel bad for the guy that bought that 5197 thinking it's the 5197 we all talk about as being one of the nicest vises ever made. it sure isn't that MADE IN JAPAN version. is it even a 5197?

IMO auction sales like the below are money laundering operations. if you have illicit $$ you cant really show, you "sell" things for silly $$ and "show" a profit on paper that makes the $$ spendable.

Thanks Kevin. I should be able to easily copy the hole locations from my 3.5" Parker to make sure they are exactly centered. I also have another vise I am going to convert which is an old Oswego 88 with a thru the bench style swivel. I got a broken Parker 88 with a a swivel base which I will drill out to fit and that one will be my test since I already have the spare parts.

(1)---Fairly new customers to the bidding game.

(2)---People that think that the higher something costs, the better the quality.

(3)---People that have more money than they got sense.

(4)---People that have that (I'm going to win it if it goes to $10,000.00), attitude.

(5)---And like Outlaw said.---After all, it was easy tax free money.;)

That makes a lot of sense. You control the auction by sky rocketing the price, then you have a couple buyer accounts you control to bid against each other and no one is the wiser because it looks like a lot of similar vise sales. The only people that notice are a very small minority of vise nuts

My opinion is that he is using shill bids to get the price up that high. I doubt very much that real money is changing hands. He's either doing it to build a fake seller profile or to launder money.

Ever since eBay did away with their fraud group a few years ago, this problem has gotten worse. While you can still "report" listings, nothing is done about them anymore. The reports fo into a black hole of nothingness.

I agree with Tonellin on that. EBay has specific rules about shill bidding of course, but nobody would notice if you only did it a few times.

"very small minority of vise nuts"

I found a GJ posting from member AJChien from 7 years ago mentioning the BF casting mark on his 391.5197 which indicates Japan made.

So lets do an experiment where one of us lists that exact made in Japan
craftsman "5197" and see if the bidding gets close to 500
BTW, I used to have a very similiar Japan made vise, purchased new in the late 1970s and used a lot. I traded it away even exchange for a guy hauling away about half a ton of dirt in his trailer. I thought I got the good deal there!

All it really takes is a few competitive people bidding to drive prices high. (Although that's really high) when I started buying on eBay I found myself in bidding wars(probably against the seller under a different acct) and spent too much money for a few items for the simple fact I didn't want to lose. I quit doing it pretty quickly after thinking how stupid it was too bid higher than a buy it now price would of cost.

Hi Vices,

Can you show that one with the slide out, and showing the nut and underside of the slide? What thread is the screw?

I have one very similar (mine is a #10 not a 77?), that has had a new main screw made, (or a new head on the old screw...

Smooth jaws are 2-1/8", and appear to have hardened inserts inlaid.

This is likely to become my "in the house" vise on the small workbench I'm working on.

Here's a few pics of the Parker 984 I supplied for a mobile workbench we got at work. All I did was wire wheel and applied BLO. This is definitely one of the heaviest 4" vises I've seen weighing in at 80 lbs. super smooth one finger operation. great all around vise!
In the background you can see the lonely wilton 1765 that nobody uses.

Happy to do that. I'll be out of town until the middle to end of next week.....I'll be out of state picking.....buying vises and anvils!

Spread the word I'll be on the loose....out in the wild....searching, hunting, & gathering rusty treasures of the US!! Hide your things, lock your doors, guard your possessions.....I am a man on a mission!!

Am I chasing that 209......? ....
