A 40 deg thermostat

I recently installed my Mr Heater 45000 BTU natural gas heater into my 900 sf garage (so far works great). I had planed on keeping the temp in the garage around 40-45 deg until warmer temp is needed. I bought this Honeywell because it appears it would go to 42 degrees.

It seems that when I set it below 50 degrees, the heater will never kick on. Is that normal for this thermostat or is it defective.

Does anyone know of one that will actually operate in the low 40 deg range?

The spec said mercury free. I am guess that tilting that one won't work then. When I worked for GE, we calibrated t-stats with a little tool that would turn the spring position on the stud that it was mounted on. A little tinkering on the inside of that stat could do the trick.

I have a similar setup. I just had an ADP Cayenne 45k btu installed (looks identical to the Mr. Heater and Modines), with a digital Honeywell warehouse tstat PRO3000 that goes down to 40. My goal for the furnace is to keep the liquids from freezing, warm up the air a little bit below my daughter's bedroom, and have the option to warm it up if I want to work out there. Although I haven't had a chance to test it that low yet since it doesn't stay below 40 very long yet. :)

If you get one of the old ones, it can be installed slightly slanted. This will allow lower turn on temps. My garage thermostat is like this for my radiant floor heat.

I have the exact thermostat and it does cycle my electric furnace at 40 degrees. Mine is a couple years old and I also fine tuned the operation by tilting.

Just had the same heater installed about two weeks ago. Dig it..! My garage is 20' by 31'. Does a fantastic job.

I'm getting ready to install a Hamilton furnace similar to that in my garage. The flue is supposed to run horizontal and downhill or if installed vertical it is supposed to have a drip leg off of the flue. Did you not have to have one or do I not see it?

Forgive my ignorance, Im a roofer not a hvac guy :) What's a drip leg...?

The exhaust flue goes through the roof. Although, it does "jog" over in my attic some. I wanted it to penetrate the roof in a certain spot as I have recently done some additions & didnt want the flue to come through a hip, or too close to a transition.

I was in the same situation as you. Look up someone in your area that sells greenhouse supplies, they will have the thermostat you need. I took my honeywell back to home depot after purchasing this one that ranges from 32f to 104f. Works great and you can mount it anyway you want. (no mercury) The thermostat is made for industrial use and cost me $35. Contact me if you need more help. Heat in the garage is worth every penny.
