I don't know VA, I've never been close to a 9" vise, and I won't benefit in any way.
But if this happens (and pictures are posted), I just may weep for joy.

And you will not be alone. We expect pics with the obligatory beer bottle or can for reference.
VA scores again!

All:

Here's a Taskmaster 4" vise that I finished last night. The vise was manufactured in India. However, it seems to have high quality as far as the overall original design and build.
Here are some specifications:
`Jaw size info;
Jaw size = 4".
Opening >5"
Depth = 2-3/4"
`Swivel base with 360° rotation and wedge lock.
Weight = 35#.

In all of the Taskmaster pictures that I've seen on the web, I've never seen one with a dust cap on the back end, like the Wilton Bullets. I was able to find a suitable electrical knock-out cover to solve that problem.

Here are some pictures:
1st. Picture; Before the restoration.
2nd. Picture; The naked vise body. I was surprised that there was no Bondo.
The rest of the pictures are of the finished restoration.

One question: Does anyone have a catalogue page or any other information about this vise? Original manufacture? Date of manufacture? Anything would be appreciated.

Theres a flipper in my area that keeps buying vises and relists them with crazy prices. Without doing anything to them either.

I did not see that add wish I had how long ago was that posted?

One more question about my Taskmaster vise:
There is a number stamped on each jaw. You can find it when you remove the jaw insert (see picture). Does anyone know what that number means?

Thanks.

VA: i know it's one of your favorites so hope you are seriously close to adding it to the CHAIN GANG. i also know you have a good sense of humor and you might be just saying so to throw Vises and Demo and others off the scent. if i was closer i'd help you carry it from the truck to the chain gang, but if you do get it i'm guessing you'll build a stand for that one and have it working in the shop. good luck

Mark: take a peek at the Wilton date stamping thread cause last week VA and I forget who else posted their Acme vises that were date stamped on their slides. both were in the late 1940's so i'm guessing that yours could be a date stamp under the jaws if you don't have one on the slide like regular Wilton bullets do.

72: don't criticize a guy for finding deals and trying to find buyers even if he doesn't have the skills or the time to spiff vises up like some of these guys do before they flip them. just be QUICKER!!

can you imagine trying to find a vise in NEW ENGLAND with the 3 AMIGOS scooping up anything worth buying? you seem to do ok in your area and just be happy it hasn't dried up like some areas have where there really isn't any coming up for sale.

ALL: I know you might all know it's Mother's Day this coming Sunday, but some of us might have forgot so just a reminder to those to give mom a call or stop by.

cheers

Sorry fellows, it's not like me to fabricate fake news, but this was a once in a life-time opportunity.---I had to do it.---Once in a while I will pull a gag, but this was an outright lie. ---I have a 208R, that's as close as I'll ever come to a 209.

I apologize for the adrenalin rush if it caused any of you to grab the nitroglycerin bottle.:eek:wned:

Assuming that the stamped numbers (1246) mean December 1946: Did India have the industrial infrastructure in place to produce & market Taskmaster vises back then?

Mark: if you read more of the Wilton date stamp thread you'll read that Wilton almost went bankrupt after WWII so since Acme is similar quality as their bullet line according to the owners i'm guessing either they produced them for another company or just started ACME in case they needed to dissolve Wilton.

I bet the KNOCK OFF BULLETS like Taskmaster and a few others were made after Wilton was back on top as other companies stopped making vises in the USA.

is the quality on your ACME similar to a Wilton Bullet?

I believe it was between 11 and 12 last night..

Drives: I know I shouldn't complain, there have been plenty of good opportunities in my area even in the limited time (compared to most of you) that I have acquired this collecting addiction.. I do get bitter though.. Sitting at work seeing some of these deals and never having a chance at it before I get off haha[emoji4] .. The reason for this squabble though is because I've had a conversation with the guy and, well, it didn't go very well.. But anyways....
I feel like I need to buy another vise, soon

Cheers

It seems in good order but the ratchet doesn't seem to be working, you can crank it open and closed...fairly smoothly but no ratchet movement...I may need some advise by an expert when I tear it down

Eddie it's not actually a "ratcheting" vise. Once you clamp something in the jaws, you can pull the whole spindle hub (and handle) towards you and rotate it to a different position. Then push it back in and it stays in place.

Vises: do you use those HUGE VISES to work on the parts of those oil wells in your backyard that just keeps pumping out money for you to keep buying these monsters. nice find on the Reed 108 and i'm crossing my fingers and toes you get to buy the Reed 209 if you get there and it's in great shape.

how do the pictures look and any previews?

cheers

VA: it's a good thing you didn't have a Reed 209 coming cause i think your helpers are still in school aren't they? stick to the babies until you are 100% or have a fork lift to move the BIG UNS around.

I can't say anything about the strength of the casting.
Comparing my Taskmaster to my Wilton Bullet, the movement is the same.
The wedge lock swivel base lock on the Taskmaster is like the one used on a FPU. It's better than the carriage bolts on my Wilton Bullet.

I don't mind placing my money in items that I see true value in! Vises I have a passion for and I see tremendous value in them especially the big old ones!! I
I keep this in mind...are there any really great vise manufactures making vise today??....right now....? NO! None.

Now there are some companies making vises but I can't imagine my kids, kids having a beer and talking about how awesome the good old Irwin vises are and how they just don't make them like they use to.....

We are dealing with a product that will, without fail, become extinct! So I want to make sure I have enough to pass down from generation to generation to generation etc...if you know what I mean!

Vises: well said and probably one of the main reasons i try to tell members and anybody that will listen not to use a 60+ year old made in USA vise as an anvil or a press.

if you want to beat on something with a hammer or use a vise on a messy welding job then a CHINESE WONDER VISE or one of it's relatives seems to take a licking and if it breaks the owners can repair or replace for $50-$100.

again best of luck reeling in the 209 and maybe a few others on your road trip.

I had one pass through my hands several years ago. It was "Taiwan" IIRC.

Here is the URL to the US Design Patent for the Taskmaster (USD254835):
http://pdfpiw.uspto.gov/.piw?Docid=...&SectionNum=&idkey=NONE&Input=View+first+page

Looks like the design has been around since at least 1980.

Since the .pdf is small enough I am attaching it also.
