I'll be looking at this vise later on today, and was wondering if anyone here could provide some insight regarding what make /model it is. The only photo I have is attached, and I have not seen the vise in person yet. The owner was able to tell me is that the jaws are 8" wide, but that is all the information he had. Does anybody recognize it?

Thanks Wrenchguy. That upside down triangle through me off. I thought it looked like a Columbian but couldn't recall any that had that type of logo. Pre 1921 makes it even more appealing to me. I'm sure I will be taking it home with me later on today. :)

That's a big 'un and Columbian are among the toughest vises ever built.

Just for my education, does the Columbian catalog discribe that one as a "machinist's vise"? Looks more like just a general purpose vise, but terminology changes over 100 years.

(Who's going to be first on here to advise OP not to buy it, 'cause it doesn't have a swivel base?)

Columbian also marked all their anvils with the upside down triangle with a C in the middle....I think it's a cool logo.

That's a beast of a vise, for sure!

Well, I drove 2 hours to see it and the seller never laid a tape measure across the jaws. They measured 6", not 8" in width. It's a Columbian 506. I was disappointed, but still bought the vise, the bench it was sitting on, and an all cast iron bench. Not a bad deal overall, but it would have been a lot better if it was as advertised.

Here are some shots of the underside of the all cast iron bench. It is still in the trailer.

Thanks guys. I don't know why they cast the top section in two separate pieces. I plan to clean this up, possibly paint it, and put it in my entry way for putting on boots and shoes.

To make the pieces light enough for shipping and assembly. Possibly to keep the bulk within a size that made shipping easier or cheaper.
