Found this tiny 1 3/4" jaw clamping vise this morning. No stampings/casting marks that I can see, but it looks fairly old and is well made. It wasn't abused at all unlike any of the other small vises I've ever come across. I paid about $4.25/pound....good thing it's only about 3 1/2 pounds :D

I'm making about an hour drive out to the boonies to look at a few bench vices and bench grinders....hoping I find some treasures!

Looking for some opinions what to price this vise at on my local CL (2 hours west of Chicago). I was thinking it should sell for around $150 with the stand an new re-sale red paint job (I had a half a can laying around) but I'm not finding values on this model of vise on auction sites. YOur input is appreciated.

I've not posted for a while but still I buy the occasional vise:dunno:

I've had a few others in recent times which are in the workshop but these are hanging about in the living room but not for much longer apparently!! all clamp-on other than the ball vice at the bottom, a decent mix methinks.

Sorry but I don't see $150 there. At least not in my area.
I would say $40-$50 for the vise and maybe $20 for the stand.

1NRO: are you saying the vises are not staying cause you can't leave them standing in front of the fireplace or are you selling them? can you go in you GJ profile and either put in city/state, state or part of the world you live in. i'd say England or NEW ENGLAND by the style of fireplace, but can't say for sure.

JW: Wilton does command top dollar, but that might be high when a couple guys are picking up Bullets for that price in your area pretty regularly. over here you might get $100-150, but i just sold that vise to a member that found it off a Craigslist ad for $80 and mine still had the original Wilton label on it.

Zoomie: where you been? i think there is a Morgan thread, but maybe somebody remembers and i just sold an old Morgan with Chicago that i thought was originally bought in the 50's and put on a ship.

hope you are feeling better. did you auction off the big Wilton 800 bullet vise yet for that Cancer charity you support?

I concur - I turned down a Wilton 745 today for $40 that was missing one of the pipe jaws. Older Wilton bullets come up for sale here for less than $100 frequently - anything in the $150 seems to stick around for a while.

Nice ball vice, not so easy to come by them.

I was pleased to get it, original paint in decent condition and nearly perfect jaws.
My favourite is the Vono clamp on though it does have a piece missing out of the round slide. Maybe that makes the wrought iron swiveling clamp on the best piece.... not sure really, I like them all

Zoom, Bluebolt has the time-line on the Morgans.---Maybe he will repost it for us again.---I asked the same thing back on page 2015, and he repeated what the Morgan representative told him.---You can go back and see what the person said to Blue.---It appears that Morgan spent the most time in Aurora, but made the fewest vises during that spell.

That looks like an early Stanley.

They are stamped on the top of the slide. Use some elbow grease and see if anything is stamped there. My guess is either an early 672 or 772.

Could also be a Leavens, they are stamped on their nose.

Hope I wasn't bidding against any of my fellow GJ members when I picked up this little Gripon vise.---It's the same as the one that Joe.Striper sold me sometime back, but not in as good of shape.---But it is only the third one I've ever seen.---Had a chance to buy one about 6 years ago from a guy from Spain who was selling one on EBay, for $125.00, but the shipping was a deal breaker.---That was the third of the three I've seen.---The seller said they were made there in Spain.:dunno:---They have a unique swivel base tightening system, but at 11.8 lbs., they're not good for much but a set of book ends.

Only reason I bought it, is that I like thing in sets, like old Noah.---But fellows like Zoomie, likes every kind vise/anvil/tool in a bakers dozen.---He's going to need a battle ship.

And it also has a swivel, which the 98 does not...still a nice looking vise.

Drives, I should have blown it up. On my tablet, I thought I saw a pin for a swivel jaw, but now see it is something in the background :lol_hitti

The Wilton magnet scored again...12-30-1966 dated 8400HD with original paint and stickers.

Grabbed a Parker 975 from the same guy...filthy, but still solid.

Same guy also sold me a Mousehole Forge 146lb anvil as well (has both British Hundredweight and pounds stamped on it): From my research on the markings, it's likely 1870s.

Yikes! Looks like a shark was chewing on that anvil!

Nice vises!

Dang vises, what a great score. Here I am messing around with 4" non swiveler Hollands and a Reed and you pick up those awesome rare vises. You are a great collector. Va that Gripon is also a neat vise.

Anyone got a 800 Wilton without a end cap, I need the inside dimension and depth of the end cap casting bore. I made one for Zoomie but he must still must be hurting because I have not heard if the 2-17/32 (2.531) fit in his 8" vise and I will wait till I hear he is healed up before asking. Also the 2-1/2 Wilton's had a bore of 1.360 little under 1-3/8 if anyone has one to measure. Seems like goofy numbers Wilton used.

Mousehole made great anvils, that one could use some work though.
I've mostly used Peter wright anvils, but all the old English ones seem about the same

We call that the "Detroit Nibble"!

Actually, it looks much better from the top than the sides for some weird reason. It'll never be perfect, but the edges will dress out okay, and I can only hope I look that good when I'm 150+ years old!

Can anyone identify this vise?

uploading images

Looks just like one I saw yesterday posted on the Youngstown CL. ;)

It is a Dropfo (as in Drop Forged). It is missing the swivel base.

The vises were made by The Fulton Drop Forge Company of Canal Fulton, Ohio. (Are there no end to the Fultons in ViseLand?)

There is a previous one in post #15390 of this thread. VISEs also posted one recently (what doesn't he have???)

I believe bl00 has posted an ad for them a couple of times (maybe not bl00, maybe VA or someone else), but there are two different ads for them in here somewhere.

Nice. I've got a 119lb M&H Armitage Mousehole that dates to the 1820's. Mousehole anvils have a lot of mass under the face, and I think it feels like a heavier anvil when working on it. Chisel and awl marks can be cool on the side of the anvil. I prefer thinking it was used for work rather than some jackass with a temper was messing with it. Are you planning on keeping it?

Any love for CM Crown Logo Vises?

I've never seen a Craftsman Machinist Vise in person, so I was excited to buy this model 506-51830. Seems very well made with clean machining and close fitting parts. The jaws look practically new!

You were right - Victor Jersey 772, Stanley Tool & Co. Stampings were under some gunk on the top of the slide.

I see mention of this one in the 1914 Stanley Catalog.

Looks pretty minty! I ran across my first one of these this weekend as well, though I think mine is the smaller one. I haven't unloaded it yet from my truck, pouring rain here yesterday.

Thanks for posting the catalog page, need to order a swivel base for mine.

While you have them on the phone with the swivel base order, ask them how they handle the Lifetime Warranty with that vise

Am I right in thinking that's one of the Columbian made craftsman vises? Shape and design look very similar to the 503 on the one bench here

I don't have Postman's book on the Mousehole Forge, but I did a little research on the different markings, and info posted on the ABNA website suggests it's in the 1854 to 1875 range, which is pretty cool.

I'm not planning on keeping it, but couldn't pass on it since the price was pretty reasonable. I know several folks who are looking for anvils, so I figured it would be easy to find a good home for it with someone who will appreciate it...seems everybody I talk to about vises is also looking for an anvil these days!
