Been sitting on the sidelines for the last 6 months or so but enjoying viewing everyone else's scores. Between working OT and Saturday's, family goings on and all the freaking rain we have had, no time nor motivation to get out to sales.

With weather finally breaking and a Saturday off with the holiday weekend finally able to get out. Surprisingly good weekend since sales didn't look that good at first but a TOO worked out pretty well. Anyways...................

Vulcan B-52 ratchet, Vulcan screwdriver and Plomb 1/4 breaker. $10

Craftsman Punch and Chisel set missing a couple of chisels but not too bad for better than 60+ years old and a funky raised panel NOS Craftsman Professional metric wrench set. $12

IMG_0111_zpsdcdn0tzv.jpg

Snap On ratchets which from a Google search says they maybe linesman ratchets. One is locked up so need to dig into that one. $5

Went to the flea for my weekly walk this morning. Everywhere I looked, I was seeing faces of the Estate Sale regulars that I often compete with. Some had tables set up, others were browsing. It felt a bit odd, I kept checking my pocket for a number card.

I resisted, but still ended up spending $40.

$22
Clamp-on lamp. (Can't read the remnants of the sticker, but the base is similar to Art Deco Eagles that I've seen) (it's now the worklight for my DP)

$18
10pc bag o' Cornwell 6pt sockets (a couple duplicates)
----- 1/4dr T0214L deep 7/16"
----- 1/4dr T0218L deep 9/16"
----- 3/8dr T2212 3/8"
----- 3/8dr JDS70 mid-length 1/2"
----- 3/8dr T2208L deep 1/4"
----- 3/8dr T2208L deep 1/4"
----- 3/8dr TM2208L deep 8mm
----- 3/8dr T2212L deep 3/8"
----- 3/8dr T2212L deep 3/8"
----- 3/8dr T2222L deep 11/16"

image.jpg

I passed on a 24pc mixed bag o' Matco sockets. Other sellers had SnapOn, Mac, and Matco tools, but they were all priced accordingly. The sockets came from a sale competitor, he was selling them for one of the Estate Sale organizers that I frequent. The world is a little too small for my wallet sometimes.

I only went to my first Flea Market stop today, and I went very early, catching only the very early vendors, but I did come away with one nifty find.

Anyone know what it is?

20170528_084258_zpsh0g78zrn.jpg

It’s not in the 1936 or 1941 Vlchek catalogs. And honestly, I haven’t been able to find anything comparable in any vintage catalog I checked (Bonney, Duro, Herbrand, and OTC). I am thinking it’s some kind of spreader, expander or lifter (vs some kind of compressor) for two reasons: while the action on the screw will obviously go both ways, the gripping surface is forged into the outside of the forked arms. Spreading, expanding, or lifting what (suspension springs?) is the question. Too unnecessarily robust and heavy for valves. And while it turns easily, that oval eye piece used to turn the screw is for a bar and leverage I am guessing. Note also that the eye bolt piece and the arms are not in the same plane. It's on a slight angle from the arms. It's not bent. Its designed that way. Maybe to clear something. So what do you guys think?

Agreed! Thanks, Lefty. (This is the second time this has happened to me in a week. AA used to be my first look-up, but after a string of disappointments, I started forgetting about it.) I've never seen such a heavy duty valve lifter!! Edit: consensus is industrial flathead.

Craftsman Punch and Chisel set missing a couple of chisels but not too bad for better than 60+ years old and a funky raised panel NOS Craftsman Professional metric wrench set. $12

Those CMan professional wrenches were made by SK, and only for a couple years before they switched to Armstrong... Excellent find!

Man, major suckage! Those ratchets  Been waiting to find one for quite a while. The wrench set is unusual with the panels too.

Hopefully an awesome CL acquisition today. I just came in the house for 5 minutes to cool off from yard work and of course had to cruise CL one time. In the free section just posted 43 minutes earlier was this old pneumatic tire machine in the Free section. And, only 25 minute drive from me. Called right away and headed down there to pick it up. A very nice fellow just cleaning out his barn and didn't' want it any longer. He used to use it until it developed some air leaks so I will have to spend a little time and money to get it working. But hopefully it can live again and is just the right size for a home shop.

Rescued a pair of vintage 420 Channellocks and an S-K Lectrolite DBE from a Savers second hand shop in Nashua. Only cost me $6.28aaf2baddb44bbbdfad8c7d89ae5f9e.jpg

Thanks 3bay,

Never seen these type ratchets before so picked them up since they are unusual. I knew they looked construction rather than auto mechanic related so they peaked my interest.

Whoa, I didn't know those existed.

Want.

What do the date stamps look like?

dkroth,

I hear you, I had never seen this type of ratchet either. I have gone over both ratchets and can't make out any type of the usual Snap On date code stamped on them. Strange.

Those CMan professional wrenches were made by SK, and only for a couple years before they switched to Armstrong... Excellent find!

Thanks EOC, I was familiar with the "normal" S-K production Craftsman wrenches as well as the later Danaher? produced ones but these had me stumped. They look similar to Williams Supercombos, thanks for the heads up on the S-K production.

Whole lot of awesome suckage this weekend guys! Merc held a sale Saturday so I brought a few things over. Didn't hit any sales though, I'm in a clearing out mode right now mostly!

I think the drill stand is actually complete. I have some similar early black and decker stands and you had to take two screws out of the front of the drill and actually screw it to the stand. That is what the two screws on the bottom are for and then the set screw looking thing on top would secure it more. I will takes some pics tonight when I get home.

I don't think you're quite right on that. I have a B & D drill that I think will fit it. The drill has two fillister head screws on the front that protrude slightly. These will correspond to the two holes. There is a bench-top stand (which I have) that has a similar crescent-shaped cut out and two holes for the drill. The drill just snaps into place. On the drill press, the drill would be held by the pressure screw on top.

Was on a road trip this weekend and hit up some old hardware stores. Found a pair of these replacement handles. I figure they must have been sitting there for quite awhile haha. Only paid $10 for both. I have a thing for NOS stuff so these will probably just hang on my bench.

Made it out to a few sales this past weekend. The first two pictures are from this weekend and the vise is from earlier but I never posted it.

The Blackhawk tool board was at an estate sale that was advertised as a pickers paradise. I noticed the board in one of the preview pictures and figured I needed to go even though the ad made no mention of tools. The board was hanging tucked behind a lot of other stuff. I didn't get to the sale until 45 minutes after it opened. There was still a line at the front door to get in. There were numerous outbuildings and I figured the board wasn't in the main house. My hunch was right. I went into this basement under the house and found it. It was covered in 10 years of dust and spider webs to include a large snake skin. Everything in this area was covered. Got it off the wall and immediately got a price from the worker. It was too large and I wanted to get in secured in my car. Got the board and the snips I used to cut it down for 10 bucks.

I went back in and picked through the junk to get some of the stuff in the second pic. Got the Craftsman wrenches, 3 piece plier set, Craftsman flathead, and completely unopened in the packaging nutdrivers for another 5 bucks. The nutdrivers have the crown top logo on the back and a price tag of $5.89. Doubt you can still find it for that price. The rest of that stuff came from another sale for a few bucks.

Got the 5 1/2 inch Craftsman vise on the third day of an estate sale a few weeks ago. I saw it marked with the 40 buck tag on the first day and passed. Decided to go back on the 3rd day and have look. To my surprise the vise was still bolted to the bench. It was a sign I needed it. Got the vise and magnetic soft jaws for 20.

I picked this up off CL today for $30. its an old Srtromberg Carlson Radio Cabinet, (Empty)

I've been looking for something to use, convert, or re-purpose, as tall legs to a drop leaf Maple Coffee table (decent 1" thick top...) to use as a small workbench that could be folded down to minimize footprint, but the leaf could be raised for a fair size work surface.

attachment.php

I wanted it to be 36" or so high so I can comfortably work there either standing or sitting at a bar/drafting stool. Most all legs I'f found were only 30" (std table height) or less. Rare to find a bar height setup.

So this radio cabinet is close to 36" high just over 16 deep, and 26" wide. Just about perfect for what I want, and it was only $30!

This is the current coffee table configuration That I picked up a month or so ago for $30: Way too short, too wide (44" or so) , and deeper than I want (currently 24" leaves down) for this workbench:

attachment.php

BUT! I can narrow it to 30-32" wide, which also loses the colonial "rails", cut 6" lengthwise out of the center, and its 18" deep front to back! the leafs add another 10" and I'l probably only ever use the "front" leaf.

I'll dump the legs off it and the leg supports ditch the metal arm supports and add a cleat off the back that will hook on the back edge of he radio cabinet, another cleat on the front to hold that from moving back, Space it up slightly to house a couple of sliding leaf supports, add felt as needed so its not scarring the top of the radio cabinet further, and Voila! a small workbench, with extensions front and rear, just under 3' wide, and a good work height!

I'll get rolling on this tomorrow, now that I have the stand for the bench top! All told, $30 for the coffee table, $30 for the Radio cabinet, some labor, and that's not bad for a solid wood bench I think!

Yup. Same one. Rusty65 posted one just like it on May 19th too in the Vises of GJ thread. His has a base on it. Probably what it's suppose to mount to. (Page 2773)

Wow, that's pretty cool. I assumed they were just meant to be screwed into the edge of a bench or something.

Thanks for the info.

I gave mine to my best friend. His last name is *******, not Cummings, Cummins, etc. So, not really a common name. Figured this guy had to be relation somewhere down the line.

Here's some pics of a set I used to have. Note the small "K" stamped in them.

Found an old thread with a long discussion and good info about them, you might want to skim over it: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=350489

I have a thing for NOS stuff in original packaging/ephemera too.

A 60 year old box of brads (or staples, or coping saw blades, or deburring tool ends...) in a vintage box is more fun than a new box.

Also, the products are usually much cheaper (at estate sales) and usually made in USA.

The rain kinda killed the flea market today. Spent $15 for this pile of rust and probably should have left it there.

1ec34f9e3cddf333fa54c32a8dba8939.jpg
SK 22mm combo, box end is rotted. Armstrong DBE, one end is usable, and 2 Proto DOE, rusty but serviceable. Sockets are mostly craftsman, and 2 williams. Not sure about the tray, but it is heavy, 2 coats of paint on it. Bottom one appears to be OD green, but I can't be sure if it is original. I had high hops for the Williams ratchet but after a closer inspection It is one solid chunk of rust. I'm gonna toss it in a bucket of diesel fuel, but i think it's a paperweight. Rosco stubby is still in nice condition! Lol

Had some good luck over the last few weekends.

The deal I am most happy with would be this
20170529_154449_zpsrzbymueh.jpg
[/IMG]

I saw it the day before and they were asking $40. It was one of the first yardsales I went to that day and didn't want to spend that much right away. It was a large gated community yard sale, so there were plenty more to go to first. I regretted not buying it all night and told myself that if it was there the next day I would buy it. The next morning, I went back, and looked around and couldn't find it. I was a little disappointed, but it was my fault. Anyway, while looking around, the guy running the yard sale said "weren't you looking at the polisher yesterday?" When I told him I was, he said, "they guy (friend he was selling it for) lowered the price." When I finally saw it, the tag said $15. I couldn't buy it fast enough. It was only used once, came with $100 worth of polishes and accessories, and looked brand new. I took it home and polished two cars the same day.

The next thing I bought is something I have needed several times and always had to resort to using a hanger. Paid $20 for this (my first Matco tool) and two stack-on storage bins like the one in the background.
20170529_154730_zpsxvadpcra.jpg
[/IMG]

I then found another tool I have been needing for years and just resorted to borrowing one from my dad. Paid $15 for a Craftsman finish nailer with several boxes of finish nails, was only used for one job and no longer needed I guess. Looks new.
20170529_154549_zpsnp4w8lm9.jpg
[/IMG]

And a few other items I bought. A Rigid pipe wrench that I cleaned up and repainted. Why would I repaint a pipe wrench? It looked like it had spend its life in a bucket of salt water. I think it cleaned up well. Wish I had the correct paint though. Paid $2
20170529_155346_zpske3nemi6.jpg
[/IMG]

A craftsman trimmer the guy said was leaking gas. I tried to start it and it was missing the primer bulb. No wonder it was leaking. Paid $3 and the cost of a primer bulb, and now I don't have to worry about my wife cutting anymore of my extension cords.
20170529_154831_zps1mwni941.jpg
[/IMG]

And finally a never used Vaughn 32 oz. ball peen hammer for $4.

I hit up a couple of flea markets today looking for a 3/4" breaker bar - no dice even on a 1/2". But, I did come across 3 Craftsman =V= combos,5/8, 3/4 and 7/ , a Penncraft 5/8x3/4 DOE, and a trailer hitch drawbar and quick change 2" ball. All for $24. The Crafty wrenches were very grungy, but a soak in Simple Green followed by gentle brass brushing got them looking very nice. I should have taken "before" pix, but, oh, well.

I stopped feeling quite so smug when I got home and found the quick release ball isn't the same as on my other hitch. It's a Reese (shown in the last picture), and the one I just bought is a ... not. Anyone interested in trading a matching Reese QR with a 2" ball for my non-Reese? Both are rated V5, 10,000 lbs. I'd just like to have the same ball arrangement on both vehicles since I also have 4 different sized balls for the Reese. PM me if interested.

Was walking my dog this morning and happened to cross a GS one street over. Ended up buying an old White sewing machine for my neighbor probably circa late 1910's / early 20s'...

I bought a little bench for $10... Was built well, already painted & distressed... For that price I just couldn't say no... Got home and cleaned it with simple green and sprayed some clear coat on it. Will be nice to have out on the back patio.

Nice score! I have the same set, you are missing one of the threaded shaft inserts and two bolts. Two of those legs are extra, are they even Snap On?

I noticed the missing insert when I was looking up some part numbers. The extra legs are not Snappy. I hadn't seen that until I was scrubbing them in the parts washer.

PM me if interested.
sorry, no hitch, or ball, or?? But what is that taper set up,dies it take different ball sizes?

Here's a few things I picked up along the way on vacation.
It's from a long running estate sale, so it's been pretty picked over.
A few pin vises, a Garland hammer, tension scales, bucket of Lubriplate and some military aircraft grease.

Floyd way to go on the chainsaw. So nice when it's an easy fix.

All- I attended an annual Memorial Day flea market and left with a decent haul. The field it is usually held in was saturated with all the rain of late. The solution was most vendors were set up on the tiny parking lot instead, taking away a lot of parking.. With the parking situation twice the chaos as normal, I, like most were parked a ways down the road. This still didn't stop me from carrying several vises and more down to the car. I'm just a glutton for punishment when it comes to that stuff. I also hit probably a dozen yard sales up and down the route and found a third vise.

So glad the rain subsided early on. Yard sale setups had been delayed. I was worried the whole event was shot. Major shout out to the meteorologists who were right on. As soon as that sun appeared and the rain stopped, people were out in droves!

Pics to follow.

Up in KY for a few days, going to travel a short portion of 68 and then south bound on the U.S. 25 sale.
