Hello gents.

Two weeks ago I was looking for an older vise and came across one at a garage sale (Rock Island 542). While looking for information on it I came across you guys and the rest is history. Now I'm vise hunting.

Purchased #2 a few days later (Reed 2C). Now, after picking the brain of one your comrades I purchased this Reed 403 1/2 today. It was a Craigslist find.

It was dirty when I received it but with a little elbow grease I think it came out pretty good. I will leave it as is.

Best,
Rob

I'll take a Wilton if I find one at the right price.

The thing l like most about this Reed is that is weighs about 40lbs less than the first two. Those bigger ones are not fun to carry around.

Best,
Rob

This is another beautiful pickup. I don't know where you live in Virginia but your Craigslist finds are superb. Most of the time you find overpriced or broken junk on my local CL page.

Are you going to paint this one? Fix the bent handle? The restoration bug is the next thing to bite you. lol.

Thank you for the positive comments.

Local CL and Offer-Up seems to be pretty good hunting grounds around me. There are a number of Reed, RI, and Wilton listed at the moment. I've sort of set a top price of $50 to buy these old vises to add a little bit a challenge and make me more selective on my buys but I may pay a little more if the right one comes along.

I've already fixed the bent handle and I do not plan to paint this one.

Best,
Rob
