To all Gents who cared to vote, comment and advice on CP 204 color (or as Fretters across the pond spells it colour ) thank you very much.

I have moved the vise outside for a sun tan (well actually my hope is quite the opposite actually, in that like many have commented, by curing it, the color might become brighter red. I will also apply a clear coat as advised and see what happens from there.

Clear coat just means you can't fix the inevitable chips and scratches.

I'm thinking that once you get the linseed oil on it and one shot gold on the lettering, it will be gooder than perfect.

I'm hoping you'll forgo the gloss black.

Yeah I'll see how it looks once I BLO it. It should darken up a bit. If it doesn't look good, then I'll paint it. Has anyone on here cleared directly over BLO without it yellowing?

It's not likely to change hue much, if at all, once the initial drying is past. If owt, it'll likely darken slightly over time from now on in, but that is a slow aging process, not readily discernible. IMHO, you've picked a good, traditional colour for your vice there. It's in the same camp as the Brunswick greens, black etc.; Colours which never look out of place on any older tools or machinery.

I am not sure if it is the color that has improved now or all the positive psychic influence of fellow vise nuts but now that I have assembled it, I actually see it looks really nice and I like it.

Vises: i too would like to hear more about the REED 209. did seller decide not to sell, sell for too much or was it beat to hell and all welded up, or was it even a 209? any pictures??

Deer: it looks like you have the pipe jaws that are usually missing which is unusual. once you get the jaws figured out either with a replacement or some work to tighten up one side and find the other one you can make a stand for it to mount to for 360 degree access. or does it have a mounting hole in back of the static so that maybe you can mount it on your bench as a non swivel vise that most of us prefer?

any idea how much your Columbian 6 inch vise weighs?

There used to be a website for Columbian parts, but Wilton killed it about a year ago. It was mostly M series parts, but many would translate. Try digging deep into Wilton's sites. They may have buried the parts somewhere in with their Wilton parts. If you find them, expect them to be pricey.

Yes, very pricey. A single swivel lock assembly is about $145 for the Columbian 4" I picked up cheap.

Hello all!
I've been building my garage and acquiring stuff at industrial auctions for a couple years. The light is at the end of the tunnel and so I'm gonna start posting some of my acquisitions.
These are two Wilton vises that I got for $225 from an auction in CT. One is a 4" Machinist Vise, the other is a 5 1/2" Tradesman Vise. I'll probably keep the Tradesman and sell the 4" on.

It's one of a pair of jewelers vises I picked up for her (My wife Julie) from GJ member dkroth.

Disassembled, cleaned, filed, polished, painted, lubed, reassembled and mounted on her workbench.

No manufacturers name, just the word Japan on the main screw.

I have enjoyed scrolling through your pictures for days now and I have never seen a thread with this many pages and information. Great thread!

So a short time ago I was looking for an American made vise and my father gave me this Columbian which I cleaned up and painted. Not a professional job but I was only trying to clean it up, which is what my goal was with the subsequent pick-ups.

Then two weeks ago I came across this RI at a garage sale. While looking for information on this RI, I came across your forum and decided that I should start keeping my eyes open for good deals on good condition vintage vises. My plan at this point is to keep my buys at $50 or less but that is subject to change at a moments notice. Like as soon as I find one that I "need" and the price is over $50.

Next I found this Reed 2C:

Then this Reed 403 1/2:

And then this guy ($10) for a practice paint job.

It seems that some of the CP model 974 have both the Model Number 974 as well as Patent 1930 stamp and some just have Model 974 stamp. I am assuming that the former are the earlier models from around 1930 and the latter are from later years. Is that correct? Are any of these more desirable than others (value wise, improved mechanically, etc)?

Yes, play your cards correctly. The chance to own a Reed 209 is a rare opportunity to say the least. As you know, sometimes it takes more than just throwing a wad of cash into a deal to make it work. Sometimes it takes finesse as well.
We are all rooting for you!

Does anyone know how play the nut is supposed have in a Parker vise? Does it fit tight in the dovetail or is it loose and how loose? Can too much movement of the nut in the dovetail be fixed?

I'm not so sure this person knows their spelling. Maybe if I emailed them offering "three monies" I could get the vise from them?

Parker's, Reeds, Wilton, Columbians and Prentiss are definitely among the more popular vises, as in easier to find. Morgan, American Scale, Athol, and Rock Island, great vises, just don't see as many.

Joe Fridays collection (nice vises btw) has a RI 342-bx, sure seeing a lot of those in recent months

Was able to pick up another Reed before work this morning 104 1/2 R
My first snub nose [emoji4] , been wanting one for a little while
Looks like it'll clean up well, except for some weird grinding marks on the slide...
I don't see any signs of it ever being broken, and highly doubt anyone could break it halfway down the slide, so not sure what someone was doing to create those marks.
Other than that I'm happy [emoji4]
