If someone is only going to be working on smaller diesel trucks like ford and Dodge 250, 350s. Mostly year 2000 to brand new as it will be at a dealership.....do they still need a lot of sae sockets? I am not a mechanic I'm an hvac guy so please forgive my ignorance....thanks guys in advance.

You have a good question? If you are working on Ag/HD equipment it seems you need every socket made from 1/4" to 1" drive.
But if you are a apprentice starting at a Dodge/Ford dealership in 2017 do you need any SAE sockets?

Used 9/16", 5/8", 11/16", 15mm, and 13mm on a 1997 F250 with 7.3L diesel over the weekend.

Forgot the 1/4" screwdriver and socket for hose clamps.

I think we used the 10mm more a couple weeks ago. This time was tracking down an oil leak.

Thanks.....I was told diesel used all standard but I think they may have been referring to large heavy duty diesels like international......so I guess metric will be fine for now

most modern diesels are metrics... internationals, cummins, cats, fords. I see a lot of standard in old 6.9/7.3 idi, dta-360's and mechanical dt-466. Ford 7.8 and 6.6 liters as well as n14 cummins and 855 cummins.

International is so *** backwards it wouldn't surprise me but even they use metric sizes, you could make do with a cheap set of see for the time being.

I just worked for Navistar in the HQ for a while, the company is still a giant Charlie Foxtrot.

99% will be metric on light duty stuff. I actually cant think of anything after ~05 besides battery clamps that is sae. Medium and heavy duty are usually half and half which is ridiculous.

We'll had a brand new truck of theirs in the shop and they still can't make a truck that's not a zip tie and loom clamp cluster **** under the hood, they are bottom of the barrel.
