While I have a Lisle tap holder socket set. I've found for larger taps I use an * point socket.
Do any other people use them for this purpose?

I have used alot of taps with 8 point sockets, also they are useful for easy outs as you can get alot more torque through a ratchet than you can a tap handle.

I run across square nuts and male square drain/fill plugs from time to time. I seldom use them but they are a a life saver when I need them.

I'm always looking for a better way to break easy outs. I've got all the other ones mastered.

I use them for taps too. I also use square head set screws a lot and they come in handy for that.

Better way to break easy out. Get the smallest one you can and put in 8 point socket on 1/2 or 3/4 drive impact wrench

I actually use mine frequently. I have several trucks with 4 speed manual transmissions and a 8 point socket is really the only way to get to the fill plug on the side of the case. Ive tried adjustable wrenches before and there just isn't enough clearance Clarence.

I use an 8 point for taps as others have mentioned, as well as on old waterous and hale pump transmission drain plugs. My boss had me using a crescent wrench on them for the first two years when finally the other guy let me use his 8 point with a big half inch snap on ratchet, and I've never looked back :willy_nil

I would like to see some picks of the antique farm machinery you have restored. This would make an interesting post.

The first picture is a D400 John Deere four hole corn sheller. The second picture is of 3 1915 John Deere hand crank corn shellers. The first two from the left are #2's and this is the first year for them. To keep this on topic all the nuts and bolts are square head and therefore need 8pt. sockets.

A lot of farm equipment uses square plugs and fasteners (particularly older equipment) where 8 points come in handy. Also a lot of older military equipment as well. We bought a bunch of military trailers that we converted into planting wagons for sugar cane planting. Just about everything on them is square drive.

Grey Pneumatic makes a great set that pretty much covers all sizes. I just bought a set for my father last month as he had broken some of his older craftsman sockets he has for years and was looking for a new complete set of 8 point sockets.

Yep, they're good for that. Though the Lisle tap holders hold a tap better than a socket.

Aside from the other uses listed above, here's a different one I use mine for.
Torque wrench testing. I'll put an 8 point socket on one torque wrench, and slide that onto the drive side of a second. Both should click at the same time if they're set the same.
