With the passing of my second daughter back in October I've been wanting to build a high end shadow box for her urn. Going to a wood store for exotic wood, and maybe get ideas for wood I want to use. I don't want some plain shadow box for my Skylar she is a princess who deserves the best. My mind artistically is fried so I asking for drawing ideas for me to build it for her. I may incorporate LED lights into it. Please if you can draw something up I will choose one and build for my Skylar. Also suggestions on wood would be nice. I was thinking African Purple Heart, or Zebra wood etc. I have pictures of her urn with measurements and where her urn is resting at the moment. Looked all of the internet for ideas but they all looked plain and one in a million. Skylar meant the world to us and want her urn to displayed for us to always see. Sorry to bug any of you.

Thank you. I'm just getting into woodworking. It's just as expensive as buying Snap-On tools.

Take a drive up to Tempe and look for Woodworker's Source. They have every type of wood you could want. Seeing it will help you pick the species. They also have remnants/shorts and thinner pieces or they can mill for you.

Sorry for your loss. A build like this will help you and your family.

That where I will be going for the wood. Just having a brain fart on the design. Thank you.

Any simple box design will work. Put a lid with hinges and a clasp. The real question when approaching a design problem like a box involves joinery. That can only be answered knowing your level of expertise and available tools.
I can recommend a simple miter joint or biscuits or finger joints or dovetails or...
It will all depend on your comfort level. When at WW Source, check out their book section. I'm betting they will have a copy of the book "Boxes" (can't remember author). Lots of design options.

I would work with 1/2 inch stock for that sized urn and WW Source can mill for you.

I got some tools, but know a few that do this day in and day out with the tools. I was looking at trying dove tail joints, I can learn quick. It's been since the 7th grade since I messed with wood. So that was 92 ish

My vote is for African Purple Heart. I'm not a woodworker, but my late father was. He used African Purple Heart on several presentation pieces, and they were beautiful.
I know he also used a wood called "bubinga," and those pieces were very nice too.

So sorry for the loss of your little girl.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Maybe think of it as a journey in that you don't have to build a perfect box up front. Make what you can now and make others later as you skills develop and you find other woods and styles that you like. It could help keep her memory alive and it could become a new tradition.

make a box out of poplar first.

it doesn't need to be your final design or even close

building it will give you ideas

after you build the first prototype out of poplar, build version B out of poplar using what you learned from version A

keep going till you are happy, then go to the wood store and buy the expensive wood for the final

if you go into this thinking the first try with expensive wood is going to go well you are setting yourself up for woodworker rage incident :)

also different woods behave differently, so you might want to make your last prototype out of cheaper wood that has the same characteristics as your final wood choice(s)

good luck, and take your time and enjoy the process and journey.

Sorry for your loss.

^^this is pretty good advice. As a guy learning woodworking skills i often have much better luck the second time on a project.

I think the advice of doing it in stages and doing some practice runs is the way to start.

Good luck and when i get home i will try and sketch something and look for some web inspiration.

Just a very simple idea i thought of
1e2fd24aa6b8fd678ad25e10f3b15026.jpg

Wall mounted heart shaped shelf to hold the urn and some of the toys there. Glass doors or some way to open it. I would make it pretty big. 6 or 8 inches deep and cover and area 2x3 or 3x4 feet.

Could easily put some LEDs inside to light it up. RGB SMD strip with white leds would be my reccomendation. Its easy to use, hide and can change any color.

I hope thats not too simple of a concept. You could make the heart very complex with multiple wood jointery and so forth if you wanted.

That's the first idea that came to me when looking for some inspiration on this concept. It felt right to make something that would hold more than just to urn. The shrine you have now with the toys and photos is really heart pulling and maybe an idea to keep.

Again sorry for your loss. I hope thos is helpful. You will be in my thoughts an if i come up with something better i will share it.

I like that. I could buy small sheets of the lumber and cut out the shape the glue them together to stack it up to a 8" height.
