Or maybe not. Any leads on affordable units. I have a three drawer 18 x 26, love to have 1 or 2 more for the new race trailer but no longer a Craftsman item and not much else. Everything's gone to 12" deep, so may be stuck with the 12s.

I have a Proto 4 drawer in a service truck that is 18" deep. Good box but not cheap

I'm finding those prices too. For that much $, I may just put one of these in the "wardrobe" closet of the trailer. It's 18" wide and the cabinet is 24" wide. Plus the drawers are grip-latch style.

https://www.harborfreight.com/18-in-7-drawer-glossy-red-end-cabinet-for-roller-tool-chest-68785.html

Cheaper than the Sears unit and the C-man doesn't have latching drawers. Worth noting since I forgot to lock the box in the existing trailer after the last race. Those big tires on the dragster helped keep half the drawers closed.

I have an older hand carry box, may just have to sort tools into it to get an idea of space required and see if I can get what I need in a couple of 26x12 middle chests bolted together.

The Waterloo is a nice box, if I can get what's needed in the three drawers. A lot of what is in the tool box now will go in plastic tubs and store in cabinets in the new trailer.

It's the same as the Sears box they seem to have discontinued. My stack has a middle and the harbor freight side box you posted, and I still find myself short of room haha.

LOL, I have a 40" plus a side cab plus a 3 drawer mid plus a 9 drawer top. And yes, there's a lot in there, no wasted space. This is for a enclosed trailer where I don't really carry a lot, just what's needed for normal maintenance. I don't overhaul cars at the track, we're not running for that kind of money. :) I may be in a portable box for a while, just because. It's got to be in the closet or on the bench top, did not leave any room in the floor plan for a roll away or some such. Too much else to pack in there.

I scanned craigslist daily for a month or two before finding two 18" deep Craftsman mid boxes. The good part is that some sellers are not aware that these are uncommon, so are priced like a 12" deep box.

That's the best I can do for a hot tip for you. Good luck with your quest!

side cabinets in trailer work well and can be cheap solution based on storage they give.
I made a 4 drawer mid section by cutting a 4 drawer top chest . worked out okay as needed a paint, biggest issue was modding lock system to work off cam lock on side .
was cheap solution and cheaper than buying 1 new 12" mid section as they totally useless.
Waterloo is nice, Kennedy do a 4 drawer but once again not at sensible cost .
Keeping eye open on used is only way get decent 18" cheap .

I wish there was an intermediate box for the harbor freight 44" box

Agree - that would be nice. Thanks for all the tips. craigslist here is pretty useless, small pool to pull from. Might find something in DFW but during race season we don't get over there much - 180 miles off.

I bought mine new ~ 20 years ago when I added the middle and side boxes to my Craftsman stack but I haven't seen them in years. I often find myself wishing I had bought two at that time ...

I got to HF and measured the side cab - it's 17 3/8" across the "ears" and 16 7/8 just below the ears, 18 1/2" total depth. The door frame on the trailer closet is right at 17". The C-man side cab I have is 16" wide so it would fit, but Cman doesn't sell one with "grip latch" and the HF model does have that. Plus the HF is $179 as normal and the cab in Sears was listed at $309. Seems much for a way flimsier unit. The HF unit would slide right in if I trim the ears, but I could probably BFH it in the hole without causing a lot of trouble. Retains the resale value. :)

My ex BIL said that his place may have a couple of older used middles in a storage shed, he's going to look. May not be pretty he said. I said "that's why they sell Rustoleum". The price would be right on that also LOL.

That's pretty cheap and tempting for a in-vehicle setup i'm considering. Do you have one of these? Working well?
price seems good, have glanced at them before but never looked at them fully or used one . If buying new I would tend go for stuff with latching drawers for in vehicle use as way better if on slight slopes and unlock the boxes or forget lock them for bit more safety.

Menards is 1100 miles from here LOL.
Not far as long as don't drive a Chevy lol ...
