Ok, my plan is to use an engineered laminated beam for my 12' X 14' garage door. (Rather than 2x12's) i am stick building with 2x8's. Question is the thickness of the beam. Are they custom made for the dimension of lumber being used? Or are they a standard thicknesses, and I need to use 2 to get the thickness I need?

I know 2x8's are not common for wall building, but I live in a cold climate, and the more insulation the better!

Thanks in advance.

P.S. pictures are great too if you have something for me to reference!

I believe they are engineered in that you need an engineered drawing with them( just like engineered trusses)
s far as being the same thickness as your wall, you don't need a full beam to achieve that, you can use any blocking to achieve the thickness you need, after the beam is installed

So are you saying I can nail other dimensional lumber to the laminated beam to achieve the thickness I need?

My beam over a 16ft door is two 11.25x1.75 LVL beams nailed together per the manufacturer spec, plus a 2x12 and a 1/2 plywood shim to get it to 5.5 of thickness.

There we go.

I would be very (very)surprised to find any wall whereby a SINLGE 1.75lvl could span 16 ft....

Specs here...other mfgs have their own specs.

Or contact your full service lumber yard, say 'here is what I want to do, please spec the product I need and sell it to me'. Many will provide a canned 'report' on the application.

Whats the load? Perhaps 2-2x8s would work, but you also need to worry about deflections.
