What should I offer on this vise?

Been watching for a crazy Craigslist price for a nice vise. Found this yesterday. I may be able to purchase it later today. The lady said this morning that I'm 2nd in line even though I text twice yesterday with no response.

So should I call her back and offer her more than the $20. I know it's worth more but what's still a great price. I also kind of like the homemade stand using the truck brake drum.

Offer her seventy five and it still isn't enough, if you need a vise and stand. .

BTW.... Just realized the screenshot isn't very clear. It says COLUMBIAN and D45 or D46 on it.

If I were selling it I would give first priority to a buyer who was serious enough to email and phone me with "I'll take it."

The value is in the stand. I love that it can be adjusted up or down. The vise is average, at best. Personally, I would pass on it but if I really needed a vise, I would say it's worth no more than $50.

However, my gut tells me the seller is just trying to get rid of it and not trying to make $$. Making an offer above the asking price may backfire. But who knows?

:+1: on that ^^^^^^^

On deals like that, I usually say that the price is fine with me and I will bring cash. What is a convenient time to meet? And here is my cell phone number if you want to call to arrange a meet.
That way the seller isn't worried about having to haggle.

The ad had a phone number under "reply" indicating call or text. I text her twice yesterday indicating I would take it and asking when I could come pick it up. No response. I found the ad when about 3 hours old but wasn't able to actually call until this morning.

Well I was able to get the vise and stand. I picked it up after work last night from the couples storage unit. Apparently one of many things they just decided to not take with them on their move to Washington.

It's not a Wilton Bullet but I'm pretty excited about fixing it up. I'm going to clean up and paint the stand. I think I'll disassemble the vise and have it blasted, replace the jaws and a few other parts and paint or powdercoat it. Should be a fun first resto vise project for me. Should I document it here in this thread?

How much?

What happened to the first guy?

Bill
I called the seller back and indicated I would pay $40 to at least cement myself as 2nd in line. She said she would call me back later in the day if the other guy didn't show. She called me a couple hours later to let me know it was mine? When I met her husband at their storage unit we realized he worked right down the street from my shop and I've helped him before. He told me $30 was more than enough.

Think about this: When I advertise on CL I include my phone number in the contact info. Thing is, it's a landline, and if you text that number, I don't get it.

so does the top adjust or is the set screw just to take the top off?
There are 2 set screws which when loosened allow the vise to be lifted up and off. The plate and corresponding square tube receiver that its bolted to come off together.

It would be easy to make another mount for a grinder or buffing wheel that would slip over this stand and be easily interchangeable. My thoughts are already racing.
