Fretters
The Parkinson Swivel jaw appears to be in very good order now its all apart and cleaned up.

It is turning out quite well, thankfully. There was a lot of rust, but fortunately it doesn't seem to have bitten too deep into any of the surfaces.

Does it harden like Japanning? I thought graphite powder was pretty inert, and stayed "smudgy".

It's the beeswax and linseed oil which harden. The graphite powder is merely in suspension. The paste never goes rock hard, but does provide a good, robust finish, which is easily repaired if needs be. It's akin to shoe polish in how it ends up, hardness wise.

This was the underside of that swivel jaw before derusting. It looked quite scabby.

Judging from the jaw insert screw stubs, I was always onto a loser trying to get those out intact.

I'll dig out the recipe link later today. Once it's hardened, there's no notable rub off.

Heck, those things have trouble hitting 88mph empty.
A load of vise's would have it dragging the ground.

Brian & All: i think that old anvil DO IT ALL vise is WAAAAAY overpriced and it doesn't look like it even has all it's pieces. i do like that wheel on the end that i'd like to find something to use it on though.

GMAN: i did click on one of your PB photos and it went to PB and didn't show your picture.

ALL: some of you that use PB i'm not sure PB (PHOTOBUCKET) hasn't been hacked cause i tried to just delete a few hundred pictures i had on it's site (for free) and all kinds of weird screens were coming up. also now i'm making posts and some words are coming up as a HYPERLINK so DON'T CLICK ON WORDS IN MY POSTS THAT ARE UNDERLINED!!

PB is causing havoc with a ton of threads currently and some are year's worth of pictures killing some very good threads with lots of information and pictures. PB wants $399 per year to do 3rd party hosting which is why i think somebody has hacked them. they used to have a fantastic service for FREE that i gladly would have paid for about 10 years ago then i stopped using them shortly after i joined GJ cause they made changes that made it totally different than what i could do in my sleep.

anybody have a solution to the $399 picture hostage deal please post here or i think there is a thread in FREE PARKING talking about it now.

There was a complete one with all attachment aa few years a go.
I was advised to pass, by GJ members at 65 bucks.
It was almost too cool to pass up, but I'm on a jag to get rid of, and no longer Aquire, things that take 30 minutes explaining why they are cool.

I don't know what shape it was in but for $65 I probably would have got it. Not as a user but a cool collector piece. Clean it up real nice, it would have been on my livingroom coffee table.....great conversation piece. Problem with those Stewart's is owners selling them usually think they have the Holy Grail of vises and want ridiculous $200 to $500 for them.

Hello Vise Friends:
The other week I was commissioned to restore a couple of woodworking vises. The customer had purchased an old workbench that he wants to restore. I felt very privileged to restore his vises. Restorations were pretty basic, but I added solid wood jaw faces that would be held in place with magnets.

The first vise (see 1st, 2nd & 3rd pictures), is a Littco No. 189. Circa early 50s? Years back, the moving jaw was broken in half and brazed back together. The challenge was to preserve the repair.

The second vise (see 4th & 5th. pictures), is a Greatneck W150. Circa 1980s? This was an easy clean/paint/polish job.

Going back to the Littco vise, I had to compensate for the warpage that was in the moving jaw (see 6th. picture). The warpage kept the magnet on the wooden jaw face from properly holding on to the jaw. I was also concerned that the vise wouldn't properly hold a workpiece until this problem was corrected. To fix that, I taped up the vise jaw and anything that needed it, mixed & poured epoxy in the gap and let it set (see 7th. picture). After that, I was able to glue the magnetic strips on back of the wooden jaw face.

I'm looking forward to see how they look on the customer's restored workbench.

Standard 500S with a 8-88 date stamp. It needs a new collar and fresh cosmetics, but that's about it.

I wanted to share the progress I've made on my first vise. I'm not calling it the end result because I'm still looking for replacement jaws and I'm probably going to pick up a used spindle with a straighter and less beat on handle. I fully plan to use this vise but the condition of the handle is messing with my OCD.

This is a well used Columbian D45 on a custom made stand that I originally posted about some pages back. I had the vise components media blasted. I'm sure the original color was red but I decided to go with a black hammered finish with silver lettering. I polished the handle and replaced the swivel lock down with a Wilton one courtesy of member autopts. After painting I removed the paint from the anvil area but want happy with the result so I repainted it. The stand received several coats of flat black and all new hardware.

I'm happy with the results so far. One thing for sure......this has been a lot of fun over the last week or so. I've participated here on GJ for a few years now and I haven't always understood the vise fascination. Now I find myself already on the lookout for another one.

Didn't want to go the Ebay route, but the better half has been a bit upset about the number of vises & bench grinders accumulating in the house.

While that would be nice (was given an ultimatum at work, chose the high route and am now unemployed) I would have preferred to see this go to a GJ collector. Gotta pay the bills...

Gonna try your recipe Fretters. Working on a 6" Rock Island that is pretty black the way it sits and is very clean, your recipe should work well. That swivel jaw English vise came out pretty nice.

Cheers. With that wax, in the proportions I mix it, you'll probably find that several days are needed for it to harden, (once you've rubbed off the excess), to the point where it no longer feels somewhat soft to the touch, if you lather on a thick coat, so just set it to one side for a few days. I normally wipe/buff the excess off the day after applying. Leave it any longer, and it needs some elbow grease to shift the excess. I'd recommend trying it on an unseen portion first too, (else a test piece of cast), just to make sure it's the type of finish you're after.

Thanks Fretters, paint takes a week out here in the mountains before getting hard. I remember using stove black when restoring old pot belly stoves but not as hardy of a coating as your mixture.

Is a Yost "The Gem" 803, a decent vice? What jaw width & approx. weight are they? Were they a fixed or swivel base vice?

Fretters, there is a Yost Gem 806 posted by GETRIDAONE, on page 703, post 14042, that's 110 lbs. and swivel based.---They must be pretty rare, you don't see very many of them.

If you know where one is at, grab it, if it's not crazy money.

Swivel bases have a bad tendency to disappear over here. Not many seem to like them, (myself included ). Was wondering at that price as to whether it was worth it or not. I'm usually a tight git when it comes to buying vices.
