Moving into a new house at the end of July. I convinced the wife I needed a 4 car garage and she gave in!. Now I need to start outfitting it. I am thinking I want to do tiles so I've been trying to come up with a design that is somewhat bold but not too crazy. Playing around with different floor designer sites I can only really come up with the following. I plan to add cabinets/shelving from the house entry door around the perimeter to the single bay on the far side. with that in mind Im giving myself some extra border on that side. Ill never have more than 2 vehicles in here, and really most of the time it will just be one.

So any ideas from the more creative people out there, or at least any feedback?

Give us details on all you plan to do in this space. Wood work, metal work, auto repair, hangout space to drink with the buds. All plays into the final plan. Budget is also a factor.

Mostly drinking beer while turning wrenches. Ill do some woodworking projects here and there, but my main focus is my truck. I don't weld, so that is not a concern. The ceilings in there are 12 foot so I've considered adding a two post lift, but that is a long shot. I do need something that can handle the weight of a regular cab pickup sitting on jack-stands for an extended period. Chemical resistance isn't a huge factor, but there are spills every now and then.

Really, I use the garage as my escape to go relax and tinker for a few hours each night after the family is in bed. I'll probably put a TV in there but its too warm down here in Houston for it to really be a dedicated hang out spot. Most of the space will just be used to store tools and parts or as working room since the truck spends more time in pieces than it does complete. budget wise I'm trying to keep flooring under 5k. I will build the cabinets and shelves myself so that's just the cost of wood and paint.

JP - Do you like the gray, red and black color scheme? What are you measurements? Do you think the back of the garage is where you will be hanging out the most or more over in the third car bin?

JP- Here is what I came up with. I would use the darker colors around the boarders to anchor the room better. You will also have a easier time finding things that are dropped if its on the lighter colors. Just my 2 cents.

Have fun with your project and post some pics along the way!!

Cheers -

Whatever you do, you're pretty much stuck with it, especially ceramic or porcelain tile. I've never really liked borders with a field but I have done a couple that were more or less monochromatic. It breaks up the floor well enough but doesn't look like a bunch of colorful rugs tossed about.

With apologies to Joey, I think that is awful. Just give me a clean look.

Resist doing a border anywhere along the walls. Once you put in cabinets and other things along the walls it ruins the border. I might consider a very simple design towards the middle of the floor if need be, but I agree with Zeke, a clean floor looks very nice. Maybe consider doing a staggered tile lay to break up the floor.

Appreciate all the responses. I'm liking a the idea of a patterned floor but I understand it's not for everyone. I've got a couple samples of tiles that I'm playing with to see if it's for me. I've also been reading up on rust bullet and some of the other coatings.

I was ruling out epoxy since I don't want to grind, but I'm learning that I may have to anyway. The slab was definitely smoothed in some way so I just need to get over there and test for sealants.

For a minimalist showplace, where no work will be done, create a pattern where the floor is something to look at.

Otherwise keep it plain. It's just a background for all the things that will be in there.
