Cheers for putting the fear of god in me. :D

I value my wedding tackle way too much to do something that silly. :D

This is proof positive (at least for me) that Brits do not compete fairly! You have a well tuned team of two collecting vises versus us in the colonies where we do not even have one full time member in our teams as most of us are shackled and handicapped by wives that nag us constantly about too many vises and we spend more time fending off the wife than looking and finding vises.

At this rate, to have a level playing field, every 4 vises that you collect should count as 1 vise collected on the colonial side! :)

This piece needs no explanation. I will save you the time by letting everyone know this is not the correct vise...but this is how I bought it!

I will be searching for this correct vise that mounts to it if anyone knows what that is please advise!

I'm humbled by this piece beyond explanation! It is one scarce unicorn no doubt!!

Hello 6Pony6 yes sir u have a fine example of a pre WW2 German leg vise. If u notice the heavy support plates make up a guide track and help to stablize the dynamic jaws movement. From what i can tell the attachment plate style is what identifies it as peddinghause, also these are about the most durable leg vises out there.Just in case this leg vise ever needs a new home i have 6 of them it would never get lonesome! oh what is the jaw width Sandman

Hey Sandman. I'm definitely not married to that post vise. Have a way to get it from VA to Texas? [emoji3]

That is awesome, you and Sandman sure picked up some treasures this week. You think the vise is a Parker 400 series swivel. Better hide it from Demoman. Nice Nice and really Nice I want it.

Good evening gents,

I picked this one up today.

It's a nice little 22lb, 3 inch vise. It had about 1/4 inch of accumulated grease and dust on it. I cleaned it up a bit and I'll leave it as is now with a little original character.

Best,
Rob

Nice local find. A few welds and a broken swivel base mounting tab, but otherwise decent shape. Nothing that can't be repaired. The scale of this tool is just amazing. Prentiss #185.

This one is great, the 3 and the 6 are flopped from where they are supposed to be (supposed to be 6-3 not 3-6) ... kind if like the stamp with the upside down airplane

In the light of recent events, my recent purchase, a puny Morgan Chicago 150 with 5" jaws. Bought it at an estate sale. I was the first person to the tool room.

I have recently purchased the same vise in very good shape. It lived an easy life as a city worker before I acquired it. It has since become my favorite vise I have ever purchased, defiantly a keeper for me. Nice Buy[emoji106] e5cf9c865e7cc94329f218804e67904b.jpg

Wow is that cool. Congrats!

Question for all you vise hunters, below is a list of very early vise (and vice) making individuals. Can anyone point me to any examples made by any of these gents?

E. D. McCord - Washington County, NY - 1831 (See image 1 below for 5/25/1831 newspaper article) - Patent listed in DATAMP under X6144

Morris Wilcox - Norwalk, OH - 1837 - According to the Huron Reflector (newspaper) of 7/25/1837, Mr. Wilcox is manufacturing vises against Patent #127 - Vise, Mode of constructing bench and other vises - Linus Dean - the article states the vises are being sold at the store of Hon. T. Baker in Norwalk.

James Massey - Plymouth St., Boston, MA 1852 - 1875

John Goldie - Plymouth St., Boston, MA 1852 // 1880 census reports Joseph Goldie in New London, CT as a "vise maker."

John Woolley - Salutation St., Boston, MA 1847 - 1879

John Wetherell - corner of Anderson & Robinson Sts. Allegheny, PA - Listed in newspapers as "manufacturer of solid box and brazed box vises" in 1852 - John Wetherell Patent #1,132 - Vise

Jacob Price - Carson St., Pittsburgh, PA - 1860

Arthur Hickman - Carroll St., Buffalo, NY - 1849 - 62

Isaac Hickman - N. Division St., Buffalo, NY - 1855

Henry N. Stone - (Successor to D. A. Taylor) 132 Commercial St., Boston, MA - 1865

James & William Case - NYC - Early 1860's (Former Peter Wright employees) - I get the impression that these two gents were the impetus for Peter Wright applying for his US patent (#38,621). Articles of the day make it sound like they were making vises of the Peter Wright design prior to the patent.

- James Case - E. 19th St. NY - 1856 - 1872

Abiezer Jameson - A. Jameson Company (owner) // The Bricksburg Manufacturing Company (Superintendent) - Mr. Jameson had 4 vise patents, #56,057, #66,712, #66,965, and #77,289. Appears to have operated as a "casting" company in the early 1860s per tax records. Also, Patent #69,361 by J. Howard Murray was assigned to Abiezer Jameson and T. S. Murray.

Chase, Shute & Co. - Kilby St., Boston - 1873 - May have simply been an importer. We find them in receipt of an import shipment from Liverpool, England in August, 1874

Dodge, Gilbert & Co. - Broad St., Boston - 1855-1880 - This company was importing iron and anvils. We do not know if they made vises or imported them.

May & Co. - 14-20 Oliver St., Boston - 1832 - 1873 - This company was importing sheet iron since 1832. Later in the 1800s their imports are listed as "hardware castings."

F. P. Goss - Peter St., Salem, MA - Advertisement - 1886

John Hyde - Clinton St., NYC - 1842

William Erb - Pittsburgh - 1860

Postley, Nelson & Co. - Pittsburgh - 1853 - 1869

Joseph Allen - Palmyra, NY (Combined Anvil & Vise) - 1890

Foos Mfg. Company - Springfield, OH - (Combined Anvil & Vise) - 1884 - 1919

Richardson Mfg. Company - Worcester, MA - (Combined Anvil & Vise) - 1878 - 1916

Fairbanks & Company - NYC, NY = (Combined Anvil & Vise) - 1890

Stark Machine & Tool Company - Buffalo, NY - Swivel Vises - 1890 - 1901 (bankrupt)

Union Anvil & Vice Forge - Philadelphia, PA - 1852

John Osburn - Pittsburgh, PA - 1871

Nice large vise, what is the jaw width and weight? Do you have the spindle for it. To bad it is repaired. Only seen a couple open channel vises, the open channels keep people from beating on the back slide.

Here is some more 411 on this. It is for sure a hefty vise, it says No 185 has 7" jaws and weighs 240 lbs (it also talks about a 183 which is 6" and 155 lb)

You can tell by looking it is a big guy. I finally built a set of 7" jaws. Took 6 years to get a example. Here is a couple pic's of a Prentiss 57.

Thanks guys for the brochure.

Those jaws look fantastic and as per usual your work is superb. Is that your Prentiss 57 (at 199 lbs that is no small guy either) or did you build these for someone else?

Some one else. Vises has one that needs work and maybe I could snag that one on a trade. That guy does not like seeing his vises going to the hospital. I do have a 7" Swivel jaw Prentiss that has seen better days. I can not wait to work on that one. Waiting for a 2" thick plate to carve a base for it.

The 57 is not mine.

Time to go fishing with 4 of my grand kids, this aught to be fun.

Many of you guys snagged some great iron while I was gone. 4 days with friends at a cabin in the Sierras at Lake Tahoe with no wifi and not a vise to be seen anywhere. ;)

Picked up a couple of small vises today.

Pic 1-5 First one was a Littlestown 145 bench vise with 5-1/8 inch jaws, attached pipe jaws and anvil/swivel base. Around 22 pounds, but a nice vise.

Pic 6-7 is Fuller vise, Made in Japan and with 3-1/2 jaws.

That is super cool stand and it even has made it to be auctioned off at Sothebys. Here is a second one you can nab for $4000-6000 at Sothebys auction :).

I'm jumping the gun a little bit because this bad boy isn't in my hands yet, but I worked out a deal with the seller and will be picking it up tomorrow morning.

Rock island swivel jaw, swivel vise. Not sure of the model number. The side has 6" cast into it. The bottom of the base has "77c" and the slide "55". Whatever the model #, it's a big vise and appears to be in excellent condition. As far as I can tell, it's only missing the swivel jaw pin and the base clamp handle. If anyone can confirm the model number, I would be grateful.

The pictures are from the seller who took them at my request.

The price is $150 if there are no issues beyond the two already mentioned. If I find any cracks, the deal will be off (thus my comment about "jumping the gun")

Man.. I don't find the big boys like you guys are finding.. But I'm just a rookie at this anyway so that's my excuse.

I picked up this little guy on Ebay. I am typically not an on-line buyer to meet my collecting habit needs; I prefer to beat the bushes and find my items in the wild. But, while looking for info on something else I ended up finding the link to this auction just before it ended. No bids on it with a starting price of $9.99 so I threw a bid on it. I knew the shipping was $27 and of course would bring the total to $37 but...o'well..

I cleaned it up a bit but left some "character" (old spilled paint and such) on it to leave a little of it's history in place.

By far my most expensive vise per pound. Ha.

Best,
Rob

JF: your vise family is breeding nicely with some really good old iron. congrats and like i said 6, 7 & 8 inch wide jaw vises don't grow on trees so save up and be quick to pull the trigger if you find one.

Riley: COOL LOOKING ROCK ISLAND that is for certain. that 77c on the base is the same swivel base as my 150 pound Rock Island 577 that is one of my favorite vises.

I don't think i've ever seen a 6 inch wide jaw Rock Island swivel jaw so unless you are attached to it bring it up to trade for something cause that swivel jaw just might be stuck and not something you'll like much. :dunno:

Picking a # if there isn't one might be fun to figure out, but in any case it's maybe pre 1930's and for sure pre WWII.

cheers

Nice large vise, what is the jaw width and weight? Do you have the spindle for it. To bad it is repaired. Only seen a couple open channel vises, the open channels keep people from beating on the back slide.
KMS, The ads are correct 7" jaws. Lots of neat details on this piece. The spindle and nut are in very good condition. I'll get some better pix when I get all of it apart. Surprisingly the jaws are fine. It was stuck in the pictured position, but some pb blaster, time, and a bit of persuasion and she separated. Now I can at least move it around myself. More pix to come. Thanks for the info guys.

Re: 8" Armstrong

What do you guys know about Armstrong vises? This 8" 200 lb (claimed) example is for sale nearby for $800:

That is a Columbian 205 M2 sold by Armstrong. It could be a 6" but I doubt it. The 6" would be about 160 lbs and no where close to worth the asking price.
