So looking for a scanner to use on side jobs And personal cars.

I like the modis cause it has a scope but 90% of the time i wont be using that option.

I found 2 used scanner for the same price

One is a modis with a 16.2 and the other is the modis ultra with 14.2..

Which one is the better buy..both are 4 sale for $1300

Thanks

The updates are important. I would strongly consider the Ultra since the original Modis is EOL. Start saving for an update though. Does either have the Euro package? Does the Ultra need personality keys?

Scanner experts please correct me if I am wrong.

I have owned both and hands down I would go with the ultra. The only advantage the original has is a 4 channel scope versus the 2 on the ultra but if your not gonna use it that much that's not that big of a deal. The ultra is MUCH faster and more capable.

They update older model years more than new ones. It's not just adding on more years every update

I have the Modis and kept it updated. I did not get the last one, so I guess I am not sure how late it is up to.

The updates are spendy. I did not do the last one because SO was kind of letting it go as far as updates and support.

I thought I would safe the price of the last update and put it towards another scanner.

For years I owned the brick. They supported it for years. The reason I bought the modis is I figured it was here for another generation, and they would support it just as long.

I have not bought anything yet, but I still really do not know what to buy. It seems to me that the speed and technology of vehicle repair is outpacing the hardware used to service it. The way it is now I just think no one will be selling a scanner that is made for long term use, even with updates. Even functionality of use is sort of antiquated for what is out there now.

I can not comment about the ultra, but I have the keys, and mine also is set up for european and it has a whole different connector and set of keys for that.

Much like technology the stuff the have in them is important. You can not believe the upgrades that are included in each update.

Having said all of this, I do not use mine to its full potential. Some of that is just plain the functionality of it. Not being able to go from system to system, with out backing out or restarting. It is just easier to use my old vantage if the car I am working on is supported for it. Anything newer you need an information system to do most things.

I am not familiar with the Ultra or what it is capable of doing. If it has the meter-scope part to it, I guess it would be easier to compare the two.

If it does not and you have a good meter-scope I would go for it.

Get hold of SO and see what the latest upgrade is and see how many other cables or equipment you may need. Including european, if that matters. SO upgrades are costly and you need to figure out what is best for you.

I would guess either will work well for a guy working on the side. You are not likely seeing vehicles only a few years old.

Get the ultra and get it updated. Huge difference in capability and functionality between 14.2 and 17.2. 17.4 will be out in a few months.

Modis Ultra for sure. That being said, I have a Modis Ultra, and Autel Maxisys Elite. If I were to choose only one to keep it'd be the autel.

Exactly. Yes it really ***** how expensive they are but you need them for both additional features and bug fixes as well as corrections to the troubleshooter and component tester pin outs, etc.

What makes the autel better?

It's more capable overall, and came with a J2534 pass thru. It's loaded with BMW's programming files meaning I never have to purchase one of their subscriptions to flash any BMW's out there...which in itself has paid for the Autel many times over in the last year. Warranty is better also, as I accidentally slammed the hood on mine. Sent it in and got a new one no questions asked.

While Snap-on's trouble shooter is nice, all it is, is a condensed version of Mitchell's repair info crammed into the tool. Most shops in this area run Mitchell and have access to repair info, and don't realize they are basically paying a premium for access to the same info in their scan tools when they buy them from snappy.

Hi thought I'd add my 2 cents....if you're not going to be using the scope in the Modis Ultra, try to find a good used Solus Edge or recently (2015 on) updated Solus Ultra. They both run on the same platform, the only difference which in sure you know is the Solus doesn't have the scope. If you're not going to be using the scope as much as you say, save your money and find a good Solus Edge/Ultra

Also upgrades run anywhere from $999- to 1249. However Snap On is running a 15% off upgrade and get the next upgrade free until the end of the month. Jump on this now as they don't do this until the end of the yearish

Very true. I like it because I don't work in a shop or pay for Mitchell so often the troubleshooter and a wiring diagram is enough to help me find the problem or just some basic info like firing order or which is the #1 cylinder.

I think Snap On should have a monthly package that includes both updates and Mitchell for one price and a monthly program for the Vantage. They do seem to be getting more reasonable though. Probably due to competition from Autel and Launch. I know that is why their Euro coverage is improving with each update.

Some of those used ones i have seen are about the same price of the modis. Or not much cheaper. I thought going that route and then buying a vantage pro when i have the $$$.
