Air hammers that last ...

I am looking for air hammer(s) with 0.401 shank for a busy shop. These tools will be shared and I suspect they will see lots of use and abuse so I need something hard hitting that lasts long. No truck brands, I don't have access to any of them.

Not looking for used rivet guns on this one.

Ideas?

I also enjoy mine, had an ir 121 before it that was a lot cheaper and also worked great, brought it home when I got a deal on the 714. They aren't cheap but when you use it daily it's worth it. Lots of cut up sheet metal with both can't go wrong.

Snap on PH50 buy on ebay or c-list.

Mine is 39 yrs old still blowing chunks of metal compared to anything the kids here buy.

Thanks guys.

The shop I mentioned in first post borrowed my Atlas Copco rivet guns and I will probably have to pry the 7x gun (RRHP12) out of their cold hands to get it back. They are in love with it. So needless to say I am going to find good 0.498 hammer for them as well as 0.401. My problem is I have zero real world comparison between my Atlas rivet guns and other air hammers.

I'd go eBay route and buy a good rivet gun or tool truck brand. I bought Mac ah600 and ah750 used off eBay and they hit hard. Better than my brand new Florida Pneumatic and CP I purchased prior.

Many of you haven't noticed that the OP is in Iceland, not the US...

What brands or stores do you have access to? Can you get stuff from the US, or is it easier to order from Europe?

Also, what kind of work are you doing with the air hammers?

I often use air hammers at work with a needle scaler attachment to descale large cast end bells on heat exchangers. The duty cycle they are put through is way WAY beyond what they are designed for. I found the el-cheapo Princess Auto ones to last an amazingly long time when put through this abuse. In contrast, the IR we "splurged" on, thinking we would enjoy greater reliability with, destroyed itself within 1 hour of use. It was a major disappointment, since I was the one who asked to get an IR or CP to begin with, and considering the PA one was probably a copy of one or the other.

Thanks for the advice guys. On this one I want new, not used. These hammers will see plenty of professional use. They will be dead soon enough. :)

I am buying hammers for a shop. They work on farm equipment, heavy trucks, construction and earthmoving machinery. I want to get them a decent long lasting 0.401 hammers - - and also something much more powerful.

I buy from Ebay and JBtoolsales.com so I have access to many brands so to speak. But needless to say I can't utilize the service offered by tool trucks in the US.

I don't have access to P.A. Thanks!

Yes I have seen the video. Problem is I have no idea how long Astro guns will last. But the CP714 and CP717 have been around for many years and seem to be a safe bet regarding durability.

Thanks!

I just bought a user Ingersoll rand for $10 at a pawn shop and I like it well it has the quick change chuck and nice rubber grip and it hammers well I can barely hang onto the darn thing. I hear they make good air hammers that last decades.

If you're able to kill a 4980, I'll send a replacement FOC to Iceland along with my congratulations
LOL.

"Big Nasty" is on my radar for 0.498" hammer. I liked this response so much I might actually get one. It would be interesting to see if it would last longer than my memory span. Meaning; by the time the guys in the shop manage to destroy it (and they will, eventually) - - if I still remember this thread and your offer.
Thanks!

They did and they probably still do. But I don't think their sub $200 hammers fit that description. Yes they are probably great for a DIY guys. But for 10 mechanics working 10 hours per day on heavy machinery?
I don't think so.

Thanks for the input!

Of course if anyone is interested in the impact hammers that last competition here is an individual that is most happy with his purchase. Ken
