Back in the late 90's Braun coffee makers came with what they called Gold micro filters that did not require paper filters.
Sadly, I had one and, yes, they really did need a paper filter.
Over time the micro holes of the metal gold mesh clogged making a mess on your counter as it overflowed.
Not fun.
I think it's a neat idea.
I also think a Thermos is a neat idea

I;m suprised they didn't go all K-cup on the maker. Heating up a coffee maker element does take some power.
