I am trying to figure out why my Milwaukee Super Hawg 1680-20 is overheating after less then a minute, tripping the breaker and shutting off. I took the Hawg apart expecting to find something messed up or a short but I cannot find one and wanted to get the expert opinion of the people on garage journal.

I took a bunch of pictures hopefully someone will spot something..

Previously I used the drill and it started smoking, I am trying to diagnose the problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

If I can take pictures of anything else or have any questions, please let me know.

Thanks, Tyler

I made an album with hi-res pictures

I tried uploading here but I am having a bit of trouble.

Thank you for the reply. This is a wired unit. I tested the switch today and cord for continuity and both seemed OK.

Anyone else have any good ideas?

How old is it?

You buy it new or used?

The smoking symptom sounds like the windings cooked the insulation off, once it heats up a little during use it shorts and tris the breaker

I'm not sure of the age. I bought it used. I think it was made in the US but I'm not sure. I took everything apart and could not find any obvious problems. I tried to include images of everything In my photos. Thanks.

Did you try multiple outlets? Was the drill under load? Brushes look ok, no signs of arcing on electrical. How do bearings turn? Easy by hand or rough?

Tried multiple outlets
Drill was not under load

Bearings seem rough, what should I check?
Thanks

Thanks for the help. I went by a local electrical motor place here and they said the Aramture is bad. I am going to try out Milwaukee's E-service and see what they do.
THanks again,
Tyler

This is making much ado about nothing. The Super Hawg, I believe, has been on the market for less than five years. Therefore, it must be covered by Milwaukee's five year warrantee. Talk to Milwaukee 1-800-SAWDUST and they will take care of it. CASE CLOSED.

Actually I contacted Milwaukee and they said:
Your Super Hawg was manufactured in the first week of July, 2005.

I am sending it back anyway, see if they will help me out.
Cheers
