Got my badly abused 1971 400s buttoned up other than polishing the handles. It should work great on my roll around welding cart. I'm cheap and this one fit in my budget. Made a set of smooth aluminum jaws for the delicate aluminum work I'll be doing with it.

OK, gotta cross this off my bucket list. I am not going to get in the habit of making these since they are very time consuming and require a fixture. I was given a sample and would have not even attempted this project without one. I have two days in this project. I did not want to chance making one out of a solid cast, notch it and try to bust it in two plus I did not have the cast material. I did want to make it out of cast iron or even better a spare vise so I uses a this 4" Athol Static jaw support and fit these 3" collar half's after chopping off the jaw support. I added a 10:32 screw to hold each half on the fixture before thread milling the 3:12 threads. Building the fixture accurately allowed let me use one screw for each half. I used the 3 wire method for figuring when to stop cutting after measuring the sample. Came out pretty nice and should put the 6" Reed back together. I was tested a little on this project and enjoyed myself making these collars.

I got this from a minion....an Athol 703, ratchet handle vise. An odd duck. 2" jaws, clamp on. I need to make a new clamping bolt, otherwise a very nice vise.

I finally painted the vise I started forever ago. I **** at painting but it looks decent. I went with clear coat over bare metal. I took pictures just now but it doesn't do it justice. Gotta take some pictures in the sun tomorrow.

I picked this little vise up recently. I honestly couldn't resist the little factory stand it sits on to tell you the truth. Just a neat little pedistal in my opinion. The jaws are 1in wide ; the vise itself is 2 7/8in long and the base is 3in diameter at the bottom and the whole thing is 3 1/4in tall. From my research​ the company who produced the vise Phoenix hardware & mfg of Homer New York went out of business in 1917. Which possibly makes the vise nearly a century old.

Last week in this post back a few pages, dodge610 posted some photos of a Chas. Parker oval vise No. 34. Instead of a forged-in PARKER around the screw garter, as my No. 34 and various other Parker oval slide vises have, his has what appears to PATENT NO. 26-1867. I asked dodge610 to double-check, because that didn’t look like the format of a patent number, and it doesn't match any known Chas. Parker patent numbers in the DATAMP database. If anyone else was nerding out about the forged-in number, on closer inspection, it's a date. It actually reads PATENT. NOV. 26.1867, which is the date Chas. Parker patent 71,498 (screw improvement - the little collar plate in the back) was granted.

I recently got a new HEUER Compact vise by Brockhaus Heuer -- a very interesting German vise that is small and lightweight, but is also strong and has 4.75" jaws. For those who have never seen one of these (I don't think these are sold by anyone in the USA), the back portion is a spring-loaded "quicklaunch" mechanism which allows for instant adjustments with a turn of the tube, without using the handle. I've never seen another vise like it, probably my new favorite tool. I also picked the matching rubber jaws and a table clamp, which I added rubber to the bottom of. I gave it a makeover to match the rest of my shop, complete with a new measurement label on the quicklaunch tube. Here are some before & after photos:

I realize the colors are probably not going to be very popular here. The green and blue are basically standard for medical and lab equipment/apparel (because they are easiest on the eyes), and cleaner versions of older industrial/military coatings when color options were more limited. I've always been fascinated by medical and industrial equipment design, so I merged the colors for my shop.

I've looked, but they seem to be hard to come by in the US. If I need another vise, I'll probably just get a new full size 120mm Heuer vise or larger. I do find it interesting that they stand by their products and offer complete restorations/part replacements, no matter how old the vise is. Not sure how much they charge, or if they charge at all (might depend on the situation, anyone know?), but I've seen some nice restorations done by them.

As for Leinen, I love the look of their vises although I've never used one; and I've never found a way to buy them in the US.

200 beans is a lot of money BUT for a 4C, you did great. I would have gladly given $200 for it

Not digging the yellow. Not a slam Joe, just my opinion. I always wondered what a yellow vise would look like (seen many a yellow painted mfg machine in my life, working as an IT guy in predominantly MFG/Production plants) but it's not my cup of tea.

That said, I don't care for the explosive neon green Wilton/Snap-On vises either. Too loud for me.

It does look clean though.

I'm /w Veeps on this one...I'd gladly pay 200 bones for a 4C. You don't see many of those around here, even as close as I am to the homeland (~90 miles from Erie). In fact, the only 4C I've ever seen in person was at a local estate sale, and they wanted $800 for it in worse condition. It sold too.

Wilton magnet strikes again....4.5" that I have a swivel base for.

The funny thing was that it came from an estate sale, and they made no mention of a vise at all. It wasn't too far away, so I went through the pictures and sure enough, it was lying on the floor in the background. The handle is straight, it's pretty tight, and should clean up nicely...just missing the dust cap. I don't know why, but almost every 4.5" bullet I find from this era is missing the dust cap....weird.
