Hey Photo... I only know one guy in Texas with a original "coach built", but he's not selling.. His was a drilling rig and mine was Railroad...

My Buddy has built 2 on modern underpinnings, but it's a hell of a lot of work...

Here is my 49 Ford. It has a 350 sbc and 700R4 with a 9" rear end. Disk brakes on front.

DGC15 - SO damn nice. I always liked the '48, '49 and '50(?) F1 grill so much better than the '51 and '52's. Yours is truly nice. Congrats.

What are your plans for it Schultz? A stock rebuild, a modern V8? How bad is the rust in it? There's a whole debate going on, on the 67-72chevytyrucks.com website right now about frame paint. I'm in the group that says wire wheeling, sanding, and Rustoleum is plenty good for trucks where there's no salt used onthe roads. Others are adamant you've got to sandblast and powder coat. I'd LOVE to do that...and then I look in my checking account (ha ha!) - Rustoleum will be just fine.

I'm on the stovebolt website too. What site is the equivalent for old Ford trucks? In case you're not familiar, the 67-72 forum isn't just for those years. It has separate sub forums for '47 up to I think '99. My truck is a '46 but they tolerate me!

Please excuse mine...it's a 1940. I built it on a 1986 Ford Ranger frame with the wheelbase stretched to 112". It is going to be finished like a 1950's era hot rod...wide whites, dual exhaust and pastel green paint. It's got a 4.3 Chevy V6 TBI engine, 700R4 ******, Ford rear with 3.45:1 gears. Everything on the frame is either new or rebuilt and it has Gabriel shocks, a front sway bar, front disks and all new steering linkage. I put in a Ranger power steering box, a flathead style 4 row radiator set up with outlets for a SBC with an internal ****** cooler. The cab is 'glass from US Body in FL, the fenders are 'glass from Wescotts, the doors, grille, hood and running boards are from Henry himself and the bed is a steel reproduction form Northern Classic trucks. Because I really want to drive this thing alot someday, I put in SPW wipers, washers from a Monte Carlo, the seat is the third row unit from a Yukon, the overhead console is from a Blazer. I'm running a Rainbow products heat/cool system with defrost. The rest of the goodies are PS/ PL/ PW/ Tilt and cruise. I have a Dual 200 watt AM/FM/CD with HD radio and a 200 watt amp driving a Kicker Sub under the seat. The gauges are from Dolphin as are the power windows. Most all of the shiny stuff came from Bob Drake and a little from Vintique including the repop 1940 Ford steering wheel shrunk to 15" and set up for a GM column. The wiring is from EZ wire. I have been on this thing for 11 years now and the only things that I need to finish it are time and money!

The engine in the pic is not the one going in it that's just a spare 302, I have a 351W just about done for it once i get the C4 rebuilt. It has a 9" w/3:55 gears and a Volare front end. I'm not big on powder coat, I blasted my frame sprayed it with etching primer and painted it with equipment/machinery acrylic enamel. I have two cabs that I'm making one good one out of, They pretty much both have the usual cab corner and floorboard rust just not in the same places between the two.

Well, I will be censored. I have a 94 Ranger, that I have been looking at doing the 36 Ford body on (Fiberglass kit, as I found an original body, but they were asking WAY too much, 10K). I had never seen the 40 kits for these. How is it licensed/titled? (assuming you checked into that, even though it isn't street yet)

Found several 50-52 chevy's last year, but I don't have a place to build it (hence my name), as the garage was built for a model T or model A.

Thanks for the response Schultzie. Sounds like a solid plan. I don't know if you saw it or not but there is a BEAUTIFUL red '55 F100 on the cover of the November "Custom Classic Trucks" with a '76 351W in it. I'm looking at it as I write this. It shows EXACTLY what could be done to yours.

I'm with you on powder coating. I guess I'd like to do it if I had unlimited space & time to take my truck down to the frame but I'd be doing it just for ego. When I pull my bed, I will be doing the wire wheeling, sanding approach. I'm no auto painter, I don't have a real automotive spray gun but I do have a small gun that came with my compressor and plan to use that for Rustoleum primer and their Pro version equipment acrylic enamel. Best on your build and post pictures here; the response to our trucks has been very positive so I doubt anyone would mind seeing your progress. Thanks for the link too. I plan on lurking a bit.

Desert Buick and djjsr,
You guys are flatly KILLING me with your BEAUTIFUL '57's. I had a '57 I bought to do a full rebuild on but I had to sell it when my then wife of 20 years came home one night and said she wanted out. I am one of those idiots that totally did not have a clue it was coming. I had to sell enarly everything by the time it was done...I still think of the '57 and (honestly) the color I was thinking of using was like yours Desert Buick. Can you tell exactly what color name/car that was used on? I doubt I'd put it on my '46 but I still plan on getting a '57 again at some point.

wantedabiggergarage - KEEP LOOKING for that kit. Find someone that bought one and lost interest, will sell cheap. Get on the kit car websites, watch Craigslist. Its out there, I guarantee it. Personally, the '40 Ford is one of the all time classic truck bodies in my opinion.

Thanks. This color was mixed by PPG to match the color that was on it when I bought it. I think it's pretty close to the turquoise that they used in '57 on the trucks and passenger cars. Chevy had two shades of the turquoise; Tartan and Indian. There are some websites around that have the old color charts. I also saw something really close to it on a late model full size ford pickup.

Desert Buick, you have excellent taste .
Mine's not as nice but it's also a '57 (with Cragars).

Looks pretty nice to me!

Back in the day there were three essentials on a car - Cragars, 461 camel humps and a Hurst shifter. The truck has two; the camel humps are on the 327 I took out of this for the rebuild. They'll be pressed into service someday.

I like that! Very nice  I saw a revision of that with a 80's econoline body with a truck bed on it and liked that too.

I think your 63 would look awesome withj a lift and tires. Of course, that's my thing tho...

How about wagons?

My 55 Willys Jeep wagon. It looks kinda rough in these pics as it had, and still is, sitting waiting on a re-do. It was my first attempt at anything automotive in my teens and I made some mistakes. The bumpers are in thrown in the back along with a PTO winch for the front.

It has the L6-226 3 speed which will stay. I'll probably go back to original when I get around to the re-do.

About ten years ago I almost bought a truck just like that. It was primer gray with a reworked motor. Just needed paint and a new interior. Price $3000. I sometimes think back to that truck. The sheetmetal was in excellent condition I probably could of made a decent deal but I was younger and dumber. Maybe one day.

I hope I have good timing one day. Run across a Willys with money to spend. It may just be me but I think a Willys is a long term until death vehicle. Then a lucky family member has to continue the adventure with strict guidelines. If it's sold all money goes to charity.

This used to be mine, bad circumstance forced me to sell it along with my eclipse. 500hp 396, painless wiring, dakota digital gauges, split bench/bucket seats, '77 3/4 ton chassis.

Hi! I'm sorry I didn't see your post until now or I would have filled you in on the details of my truck, but now that you have my attention...here goes.
I had originally seen a body package from a place in Florida called US Body Source. It wasn't so much a kit as it was a body that could be fit to a Ranger or many other small pickup frames. Since I have wanted a 40 for years, I was really interested but as I investigated the product, I found they took a lot of liberties with the styling of the truck and it would be almost impossible to make their body package look like a stock 40 Ford. The one exception was the cab, it was spot on, except for the lack of drip rails. At the time (1998) the cab was 3900 bucks, kinda spendy but there aren't too many good 40 Ford trucks for sale up here in MA. The cab was molded with a Ford Ranger floor panel, so I found a dead Ranger, dragged it home and tore it apart. I sold off lots of stuff from it and ordered the cab. I had to fabricate perches to mount the cab on the Ranger frame and I used Chevy S-10 cab mounts. I stretched the wheelbase on the Ranger to 112" by flipping the rear leaf springs and re-mounting them. The trick was to mount the cab as close to the frame as possible so that standard S-10 mounts would work. Then I began hanging body panels off the cab. I fitted the hood, grille and front fenders and then fabricated what was needed to hold them in correct position to the cab. The fenders BTW are fiberglass from Wescotts Auto Restyling. They are really nice pieces. Then I ordered a repro steel bed from Northern Classic trucks. The doors, hood and running boards are original steel.
So as you can see from the pics, the whole thing looks pretty much like a stock 40 Ford and just about any trim and body part for a real 40 will fit on this one. My main objective was to get it to look like a restored 40. The interior is far more plush than a stock truck ( it ain't hard to do, these things were pretty spartan inside)

So, it's not a kit, it's not a street rod, I guess it's kinda a repro-rod. I purchased a title from a title company and they sent me the paperwork, bill of sale and a VIN tag for the vehicle. With that information, I secured a valid MA title for the truck. Now this was years ago and I remember the cutoff year for this type of certification was the 1984 model year. I'm not sure how the paperwork would be handled today and I'd be willing to bet that it varies considerably by state. The good news is that the NSRA and SEMA are instrumental in sponsoring legislation that has been adopted in some states that allows for a street rod to be titled as the vehicle it most closely resembles. I opted for getting the title for a 40 Ford even though I had a valid title for the Ranger because I was concerned that registration and annual inspection would be a PITA if the truck didn't look like a Ranger. And although, I have no plans of selling it, a sale might be smoother if it looks like a 40 Ford, smells like a 40 Ford and has the title for a 40 Ford.

I hope that helps, even though you question is a few months old now. Maybe I should have PMed this to you but I figured that some of the information might be useful to other guys on here. If you think I can help answer any other questions, PM me!

What are those valve covers and air cleaner? I would like to get a set.

I took these after it rained for that "wet" look

Please, please don't paint this thing. Fix what it needs, put in a bed floor, add some nice trim, and maybe satin clear the body. I think it will look incredible.

3798j, your '55 Ford is beautiful. I've got a 1950 Chevy 3800 in waiting. I can only hope it looks half as nice as your Ford when it's finished.

Sweet Mary, Mother of Jesus!! I've been ignoring this thread until today. This has to be my favorite thread of all time. I was going to comment on several trucks at the beginning but shortly realized that I would have been commenting on all of them.

So I'll just say.....outstanding!!

I have to go now. I'm feeling moist.

BTW, personally, I'll take any additional pics of any era Power Wagons!!!

There are already too many "patina" cars around. Particularly here in SoCal. What's gonna be the next fad? I'm tired of this one.

At the Grand National Roadster Show I saw a lot of shiny bare metal cars. And about 100 "patina" rats, or so it seemed.

Here's my 1953 Dodge M37, did a full frame up restoration. Found it as a stripped out old parts truck missing lots of stuff like it's engine, radiator, winch, entire driveline and much more and the body was full of rust holes.
