I love that Chicago Rawhide hammer so much. That, and the Staff Sargeants Kennedy, is practically folk art.

You have a great eye.

Swap meet this weekend at the "Steam-up" tractor show at Antique Powerland about 45 minutes south of Portland, Oregon. Yes, it's as cool as it sounds!

Here are a few of the items I picked up:

- Proto Los Angeles 5649 3/4" drive pebble ratchet $50
- Plomb 5449 1/2" drive ratchet $15
- Plomb WF-22 3/8" drive sliding T bar driver $1
- Plomb 5463 1/2" drive 10" extension $1
- Plomb 5/16" x 3/8" DBE $1
- Ward's Powr Kraft 84-4709 ignition wrench & plier set $2
- P&C 1704 4" adjustable wrench (my favorite) $5
- Vintage Craftsman table saw miter gauge. $3

And the "you don't need it" find of the weekend:

- Diamond Tool & Horseshoe Co. adjustable wrench repair kits - 8" - 24". The seller wanted to sell all these as one lot. There are more jaws than knurls and pins, so I don't know what the story is. $30/all. If you're looking for parts, I will likely post those on the for sale thread.

Nice Chicago hammer Craptain.

I see a lot of older hammers with the same countersinks/holes drilled in the handles. Is that something tool companies used to do for grip or is it just something that many people used to do themselves to add grip to the handles? I never see it on any newer hammer handles so it had me wondering.

Owners who work in shops with lots of other employees do that to make them uniquely identifiable.

That tape with sinker is for measuring the amount of fluid in a tank. We use them on ships for measuring fuel.

That's what i figured, I build boats but all of our tank depths are already known. but I figured I'd find a use for it somewhere at the shipyard.

Thanks Ecotec and Jeremy[emoji106]

Nice scores there Brian I wish I could have made it out there.. but I managed to make it to one good sale before heading out to the coast. I as well like the P&C stuff and the local history there.

I got a box of ratchets and sockets for $20. The ratchets are in good shape. The Snap-On and SK sockets are in ok shape, the CMan are pretty good. Also not shown are some Wright (I think) thick walled sockets that are soaking in rust remover.

Went to a garage sale we had gone to a couple of years ago. That time we couldn't find it and gave up. This time we got lost for a half hour or so. The guy had been collecting tools for 30 years and was clearing them out. He had more than a hundred antique planes. I couldn't afford any of those. My wife keeps me at a 10 buck per item limit. Anyway here's the haul;

Mostly rusty stuff, but I thought the lunch box was pretty cool.

View media item 73211
Got a leather strap that looks a lot newer than the box. There are vents on the sides and top. The box slides out and the thermos fits in own compartment. When the box is closed the vents on the sides match up with the vents on the slide out portion.

View media item 73212
The thermos is missing it's stopper. I guessing a cork with metal top. The tin drinking cup is still there. Pretty sure the thermos belongs in a different lunch box. Just doesn't fit that well.

While Rileysan was distracted by the Oregon Steam Up flea market, I sneaked into his backyard and picked up this old SK #1502 Auto Mechanics Tool Chest and a few other items.

The box had a bunch of hole saws in it, and the big ones caught my eye. I saw enough to justify the price, so I bought it, and added the oxygen and acetelyne bottle caps SK #42470 1/2" ratchet, 24" long 1/2" twist drill (factory made), "Pony" brake rivet tool, and one emergency triangle. The lump sum price was $30.00.

The box took a little body work to close easily, but is in pretty good shape. The brake rivet tool just took some oil to work smoothly, as did the SK ratchet.

The contents of the box were:
1/4" drive stuff:
Giller flex handle
Challenger 1/2" 12 pt. socket
Challenger 7/16" 6 pt. socket
Proto 3/8" 6 pt. socket (new)
Proto 11/32" 6 pt. socket (new)
Proto 1/4" 6 pt. socket (new)
Craftsman V 10mm 6 pt. socket
Craftsman V 1/4" 6 pt. socket
Apex 5/16 hex magnetic socket
Apex 3/8 hex magnetic socket
1/4" NF thread to 1/4" square drive adapter

Hole Saws:
Sioux large arbor
Sioux 3-3/4"
Milwaukee 3-5/8"
Lenox 3-1/2"
Sioux 2-1/2"
Sioux 2-1/8"
Sioux 2"
Starrett 2"
Starrett 1-1/2"
Black & Decker small arbor
B&D 1-1/2"
" 1-1/4"
" 1-1/8"

1/4" hex drive stuff:
Apex 1/4 Magnetic hex (4 each)
Apex 5/16 " "

Misc. drill bits, including a SKF brand 3/4" Silver and Deming bit.
Misc. flat wood bits.

two small levels, an Omron (USA) and a Rhinecold Alaska

Punches and Chisels:
2 Stanley and 3 Enderes punches
Proto B6A cold chisels, 5/16" and 1/2" wide

3" cup wheel, 5/8-11 arbor
Rohm 1/4" drill chuck with key and holder
2 chuck keys and 1 rubber holder
Skil 5" buffing pad (new)
Huge safety pin (numbered) for tool crib?

Misc. 1/4" drill accessories:
right angle adapter with handle
jig saw attachment
Flotec garden hose pump - works great!

Unibits - Max #1, Max #2, Max Mk. IV

At other sales I found the cup brush and pint of boiled linseed oil for $0.25 each, and the P&C 1710-S wrench for $2.00. (Fifth Photo)

This sale was kind of sad. The fellow was a hoarder, and some of the stuff was inherited from his two grandfathers. His girlfriend made him clean out the garage, and he left the sale as soon as it started.

I didn’t buy this empty midget socket case, but I thought the marking was interesting. I don’t believe I’ve seen a marking taking up the whole lid before, and I’ve never heard of HI-TEST.

Visited the newish Wysox, PA, flea market this morning. No must-haves, but stopped at another spot west of Towanda, and snagged a (Snap-on) Par-X 1/4dr socket driver for $.50. Also spotted a couple pairs of pliers I might go back for another time.

Nice finds Provincial, lots of good stuff there. I especially like the unibit with the blunt end for enlarging existing holes in tight areas. They aren't nearly as easy to come by as the regular ones that taper down to a 1/4" drill tip. I grab those every time I see them.

Yeah, the Unibits sealed the deal. Once I saw them, it was a no-brainer! :rocker:

Don't know what it means. But I have 2 of that size Baldor and I absolutely love them. Only 1/3 hp but that's real hp not Chinese hp so it drives the 6" wheels fine.

After Church, was looking on CL and saw an Estate Sale that apologized about lack of advertising and pics, but they needed to move items before end of day.

Decided to go and found out they had been open on Saturday as well. It was another time that I wished I had been there first.

Not a lot left, but looked over everything in shed and got a few items.

Haven't cleaned anything up yet, so your seeing it as found.

Pic 1-- Small chisel, 4" metal clamp with different handle on bottom. Name is in script, but may say Stearn's, Wiss scissors 14-1/4" from top to bottom, little thing that looks like a cage is my What's it.

Pic 2--23 3/8" drive various sockets, all Bonney

Pic 3--Snap on on left, S-K in middle and on right, a battery post cleaner with pull out small wire brush.

Pic 4-7--Bonney Metal Chest that is 19" L by 8" W by 5" deep. Bonney decal inside lid looks like it says TD4B. Does have metal tray as well.

Note: Added from Lesser Son, the 1951 Bonney catalog (section 2, page 7) shows a TD4B kit that came in a MB48 metal box. The dimensions and the logo match yours.

BB, I wonder of NYE stood for "New YorK Erie" Tools works? :dunno:

It's named for the founder. Here's his son's obituary that has some good info.

Obit. from the Chicago Tribune:

Harry G. Nye, Champion Yachtsman
September 22, 1987|By Kenan Heise.

Harry Gale Nye Jr., 79, one of the nation`s most respected yachtsmen and former owner of Murphy & Nye Sailmakers and Nye Tool Co., twice won the Chicago-to-Mackinac race and was two-time world champion in yachting`s International Star class.

A memorial service for Mr. Nye, a resident of Newport Beach, Calif., and formerly of Evanston, will be held at 11 a.m. next Monday at the Belmont Station of the Chicago Yacht Club in Belmont Harbor. He died Sept. 11 in Newport Beach after a long illness.

Mr. Nye, a Chicago native, was attending Yale in 1932 when his father died. The family tool and die business was suffering during the Depression, and the young man was without work. He loved sailing and began mending sails as a hobby and then as a business. By the outbreak of World War II, when canvas and other sailmaking equipment was no longer available, he had hired 15 workers to cut and sew sails. He sold the company in the late 1950s.

The Nye Tool Co., the tool and die firm founded by his father in 1904, was sold in 1964 to an Indiana company.

His sails had gone around the world, and Mr. Nye used them himself in 1942 to win the International Star world championship. He repeated the feat in 1949 against a field no longer reduced by a world war.

Mr. Nye captured the ``Mac`` in 1950 and 1951. He also won the Detroit-to-Mackinac Race.

In 1965, he was named Chicago-area Yachtsman of the Year.

He won the Olympic trials in 1956, but did not go on to compete because of his health.

Over the years, he owned more than 50 ships, all called ``Gale,`` a family name.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey; four daughters, Judy Hallisy, Sally Parris, Nancy Kriz and Gale; two sons, Harry III and Charles; and a brother, Americus.

Nice thanks - Starting with the Gs - 5735 FoMoCo C70B-16DO42-A on both and a 1&2 on each . The Ts have 5736 and C70B16D042-B and 1&2s on each.

Yup originally designed for a 1967 Fairlane. Quite possible a Mustang could have used the same part number too. C7OB decodes as C = decade code (1960) 7 is the last number of the year, O (not 0) is the product line letter code for Fairlane (Mustang code is Z) B is the design responsibility code for Body Engineering.

The 16D042 would be a name for the part in Ford speak, it looks like it stands for fender emblem.

The A and the B at the end are final part number designators since you don't want both to be the same part number.

You did good on the vice, but the rest?!.. No offense, you spent $85 on some ****!! time to slow down!!

Well I am offended. Calling another person's tools **** is like calling that person's mother a bad name in my opinion. I didn't say I got a "U ****" or a great deal.

My buddy wanted me to pick him up one of those Craftsman plastic tool boxes with USA made Craftsman tools if I found it so he could keep it in his car. They are great for exactly that reason. Craftsman pear head ratchets are not great but they do work and for the price it's heard to beat the sockets and wrenches for a home user for that price. I added a few sockets and some working Taiwan ratchets and sold it to him for what I had in it. He is VERY happy with it.

The second post I am HAPPY with the price I paid. I collect vintage Craftsman and some will go into that collection. The other USA stuff is decent and some guys on here collect some of the particular brands. I sell and trade with them for stuff like that. The import tools were mixed in, didn't buy them on purpose.

Maybe you were joking but it didn't seem like it.

Lugz I can tell you Hi Test was a Japanese socket set brand. They were those knockoff Craftsman ratchets with the V selector that we often see, stamped only with the word Japan.

Yeah, that's no joke.

Used tools, one of the better deals out there.

Visited the newish Wysox, PA, flea market this morning. No must-haves, but stopped at another spot west of Towanda, and snagged a (Snap-on) Par-X 1/4dr socket driver for $.50. Also spotted a couple pairs of pliers I might go back for another time.

I keep hearing that the Wysox flea isn't worth the time, so I haven't been to it yet. What was the other place?

3bay: Thanks. Glad I didn't spring for it in that case. It was empty case, box, chest day for sure. Also passed up a wooden Atlas Headlamp Aiming kit box with painted-on markings, a wooden M&B Air Grinder box with a perfect label, a US Navy Spare Parts Box with a nice March 1945 data plate, all empty, just the boxes. I'm actually proud of my growing willpower to resist them!

Isbell's Treasure Chest.

Wysox flea is still a work in progress. Maybe it will grow into something. For a flea market to prosper, two things have to happen: sellers have to bring stuff that isn't ****, and buyers have to spend money. It just isn't established yet. Hard to know how it will turn out, but I think the location and access from rt6 will restrict its potential. I heard the indoor portion will soon be gaining 11 more booths, but the exterior spots are not clearly defined from general parking, which is limited. I think there were 6 vendors outdoors today.

I hope it doesn't go the way of Towanda's antiques shops. A couple years ago there were five in operation. Now most are locked with the lights off, and "for sale by owner" signs. Maybe some of that stock will wind up at the Wysox flea.

Been looking for a rototiller to do some garden work and flowerbed jobs, found this on Craigslist for $65 works but could use a new belt.

Then me and the daughter went to the flea market and I found a small box of wrenches, a billing ratchet and a sk bit driver with the end cap!
Gave $6 for the hand tools.

Haven't been out to any real estate lately but I have been enjoying everyone else scores!

Yeah, I have asked a couple of vendors at the flea I go to in Athens and all of them said they were not considering it and they were not impressed. The Athens flea market has improved but it to has a long way to go.

Last time we hit the shops in Towanda we saw some decent furniture and lots of junk but almost no tools. I think it was in May.

Mike, the 1951 Bonney catalog (section 2, page 7) shows a TD4B kit that came in a MB48 metal box. The dimensions and the logo match yours. The 1957 catalogs shows the TD4B in an MB60 box with dimensions 21-7/8x9-1/4x5.

Is that on rt199, and is it really open only Mondays?

Open Saturday now as well as Monday. I have only been to a few of the Saturday markets, usually a few regulars and a couple of yard sale type vendors. They also do Sunday if it's a holiday weekend. July 4th they did 4 days! I I had off on Tuesday but elected to skip it to sleep in. I haven't been going to the auction on Saturday so it has been my only source other then the rare yard sale score.

Thanks, Sam. I went and checked it out this morning, with my dad. Despite earlier rain, there were about a dozen vendors, some with various tools. One guy had several bins with mostly dismantled wood planes, two or three broken sets of Mossberg extruded sockets, etc. On a whim, I bought three volumes of norse sagas in 1950s Everyman's editions. I recently binged all episodes of "The Last Kingdom" on Netflix, and enjoyed it.

Yep that's Dave, he is the only one that shows up consistently rain of shine. He used to do the winter as well, but due to health issues he said this may be his last season.

On a good day there is usually 3x that many vendors, and last year on Memorial Day it was packed. people where parking along the road almost to the bar up the road.

I got two wood chisels, two Vaco t-handle Allen wrenches, a Krauter chisels and a sharpening stone from him this morning as well. Pictures to follow. He had more of the planes last week, I think all the good ones are already sold. I usually stay away from planes, especially if they are broken or missing pieces.

When to an estate sale auction about 2weeks ago with a big turn out - it's super hot but they had tents out and fans. It looked like a home body shop kinda deal with a lot of tools. There was a mint 86 ss Monte Carlo and a 66 chevy sumthin that prob drew the crowds too but they were the only things that didn't sell. I went for a few different things some of which I won lost out on a lot of the tools due to bidding frenzies. I missed out on a cool old rock oyster (per auctioneer) vise but it needed work and went up to eBay prices. Won a snap on ratchet screw driver in case for $10 first up.

I really didn't get much sleep the night before and was kinda in a haze and had a momentary lapse in judgement. Tools were being bid way up and I was kinda drifting away when I heard the auctioneer say pressure washer 70 dadadad whatever. My brain told me I need a pressure washer and most of the stuff here was good equipment so my hand raised and low and behold I won this thing for 75 and I haven't even seen it. Went to pick it up and couldn't even find it because it was sitting around a bunch of welders and I thought it was one !. My heart sunk when I saw it but loaded it up anyways. Sure enough the 5way valve selector is bust- I did pull it apart and put it back together tightening down the loose screws holding it together. Managed to work for about a min before leaking everywhere and blowing the breaker. Parts are no longer available and an internet search on it was pretty grim (court case of kid killed with it in his hand). So any advise on maybe bypassing the switch/selector valve would be great. Right now it sits behind the shed out of site so I can forget about it.

After that there was only one item I was interested in and I bid up on it pretty good but I feel like it's a good deal($160) being the last 3/4 socket set go for more and this is cooler than CM. Plomb LA 3/4 set 7 sockets 1 7/16"-1 1/16", T, ratchet, breaker, 8"ext, 16"ext and 7 larger herbrand van Chrome sockets 1"-2" and a new 1 1/2 twan to boot.

That plomb 3/4 set was a pretty good deal! You did well as the metal box is nice and the tools are not all rusty. Nice job... To echo provincial post that in the plomb thread and people will reply!

You guys are stompin' all over my old stompin grounds! A flea in Wysox? Dad used to own Regal Car Care there on Rt. 6 in Wysox. I must get back up there this summer. My Grandparents are way up there in age so I'm absolutely making a trip, perhaps the weekend of the 25th? Sam, how's the auction been?
