What did you do "IN" your garage today?

We had Fri-Sat-Sun Yardsales, so mostly selling stuff. Sunday I finally got the old 54 Craftsman 3 drawer roller I've used for years as my welding bench pulled out and the tools unloaded, the 1/2" steel top plate, side box the mini MIG sat on, and the shelf the small vise/ground clamp off, and rolled it out to see if it would sell the last day. (It didn't...)

Started working on its replacement; A SO 300.

Put everything away that didn't sell. Collapsed for a bit , then had a shower.

I was actually able to make chips in my new shop yesterday.

Feels good to be back at my lathe and mill and working "IN" my shop rather than "ON" the shop.

YESTERDAY, I used my Miller Spectrum Plasma cutter to cut seven inches out of the width of a lighter duty cherry-picker/engine hoist. I/we made two cuts, one on each side 3.5 inches in from the struts.
The original width is 35 1/2 inches and this will not fit through a 36 inch door opening without removing the door.
I bought this RUGER shop crane with the intention of making is narrower for easier maneuvering in the shop and through doorways.
Now that the struts are cut off, I am going to turn the base of the crane and the back column 180 degrees before welding the crane back together. The two stabilising bars will be moved to the rear where they change from compression to tension control. The control bars will be bolted in place rather than OEM welded for future breakdown for easier storage. The back-bone of this crane will get cut near the bottom and have a sleeve welded in to act as a receiver. There will be a securing bolt to hold the back in the receiver.
At a later date I would like to replace the fixed front wheels with casters for improved maneuverability in the shop.

And this is how far we got today. The struts are a foot shorter, the track width is 7 inches narrower and the back strut has been cut 5 inches from the base. I welded the shortened struts back on after rotating the base 180 degrees. I am off to The Metal Super Market in the morning to buy some material to finish this project. The final insult will be installing the castors then we have lift some DANA 44 axles onto some stands.
It felt good to get back to some welding. My Miller Matic 200 makes my welding look better. Made in USA machines and tools do that.

got the parts ready to fix grandsons 1/10 r/c trucks. new drive shaft and bigger motor and pinion. this has been great hobby for us.....we spend time together,he has to go outside, it keeps my head busy and its cheaper than working on my real truck. have you guys tried this stuff ?????

Broke down and bought a can of orange spray paint for the Suburban 12. Shot one of the side panels for the tractor resto with it to see how it looks, and I have to say I don't mind it. Going to go with the paint scheme that fits the later sixties and the 10xl instead of the blue for now, because I just want to get it done and out of the shop so it can be a workhorse again.

Additionally, since it's just Krylon, I won't be as afraid to actually use it once I get it finished.

Made a shelf unit from scraps for the two planes I recently refurbished. Notched the shelves under the blades rather than store them on their sides. A 5/16" hole in the shelf under the rabbet plane keeps the fence handy without being mounted.

Bent shaft on my mower a few weeks ago.
Found a Deere JX75 for $60. Swapped parts, tuneup, went over transmission.
Works like a charm now. Can't wait to mow the dead weeds.

Was looking for either a pressurized lubrication engine, or a cool 2cycle Suzuki, property has some mean slopes, and a LOT of rocks (...)

Polished the Edge out in the front yard, in the shade. Can't get it in the barn, and too tight in the garage. Not too bad- I think- for a hairlipped amateur, drinking beer !

I borrowed my son-in-laws Mcquire da polisher, nice machine- in my opinion.
This car sees the ocean quite often, and it was about time for a cleaning !

Today, I was trying to finish the assembly of the cherry picker I have been modifying. I have one more minor change for tomorrow. Paint? I don't know.
I bought a New MILWAUKEE 5 inch angle grinder today. I could not find the Milwaukee I own. This new grinder really moves metal and the balance is really nice. I prefer WALTER flap discs.

Not in the garage, but I spent some time getting the ignition timing closer on the Model A.

Went from locked out mechanical advance W/ 28° total and a 10° start retard to 32°-34° total, W/ 10° advance curve all in by 3,000 RPM.

I'd know where it's total is set more precisely but someone was "helping" me and wound up moving the timing pointer inadvertently.

It's a MSD "E Curve" distributor, so it's easy enough to change the curve, current I have it set to a 1 & 4.

I have the vacuum hooked up to the upper "timed" port so it doesn't see vacuum at idle, with the 1&4 setting it gets 10° of vacuum advance at 10" of vacuum.

yea i used to have several, mostly play time in the yard. my favorite was grasshopper buggy i built, and then converted to a monster truck using midnight pumpkin and blackfoot parts.

i really liked building them.
raced a heavily modified optima 4x4 buggy that i converted to a monster truck. this was "back in the day" before there were commercially available truck kits. when the RC-10T came out, the heavyweight optima just wasnt competitive anymore. i still hav the truck, it's a shelf decoration now..

got done with work early today, so i went over to the neighbors house to look at a lawn mover he had asked, a couple days ago, if i could fix the deck mount.

JD L120 had a deck mount that broke off, pulled the mount, went back to my garage and cleaned/straightened the mount, welded it back together, and added a couple gussets to keep it from bending again.
by the time i had it done, he'd pulled a mount off an old cub cadet that was cracked. installed the mount on the JD and reinstalled the sheet metal. took the cub cadet mount back over to my house, v'd the crack out, welded and plated one side, straightened the other side of the mount so the pin would line up.

went back over and stuck it back on, and stood around BS'n for a few minutes.

he insisted i take a $100 for my time.....

got home, closed the garage up, showered, and took the wife out to eat.

Picked up and installed my new compressor today. Swapped in a correctly sized breaker and wired in a receptacle for it. Also made some rubber feet from some potatoe bin liner scrap I had laying around and made a manifold out of 1/2" type L so I could mount the regulator and filter on the opposite side.

he told me he priced the mount for the JD, it was $45 or so. he didnt mention the cost for the mount on the cub cadet, but i'd be willing to bet it was over $100, that is if it was still available....

ive told both him and his son, (who lives next door to me), i dont do this stuff expecting to get paid, they've both helped me out in the past, with old lawn mower parts, plowing my driveway during an unexpected mid day snowstorm when the wife and i were goth at work,
the old man gave me several radio flyer wagons, he'd been hoarding, when were donating them to camp riley. one of thewagons actually belonged to the previous owners of our house, we managed to get in touch with one of the granddaughters, her and her mom came over about a month ago, and we gave them the wagon. the woman remarked "i remember when daddy painted it blue, it was my favorite color" they both left with tears in their eyes....
i found out my neighbor ( the son) was back in the hospital, i cut his grass 5 times while he in and out of the hostipal, and confined to a wheelchair for several weeks. he tried to pay me several times, i kept refusing, he called me over last week and gave me a case of beer.

Got it at menards a few yrs ago for like $30. It's nice and folds up

I used Adams ceramic boost sealant, going to top with collinite 845 wax
