The tough guards got redesigned and the old ones have been on clearance for $3.00 for awhile, they just dropped to $1.50 at Walmart. Good filter for the price.

Don't listen to him. Tough guards are a good filter. The Orange ones had their bad name to them, but they're still fine as well. You can check out bobistheoilguy. Tough guards are considered pretty decent over there, and those guys are picky.

No discount, or amount of money paid to me could tempt me into using a fram on my car.

Wow. Guess you guys have never done used oil analysis or filter cutting or any amount of research on filters. Stick with your $15 royal purple filter...

I never saw any post claiming $15.00 Royal Purple filters are better. They may, or may not be better. The bottom line is Fram is (IMHO) built to a price point, and as such, at least in the past, not a great filter. Perhaps Fram has upped their quality, however, I suggest it's to little, to late for me.

Lol, none of the frams I have cut open have ever had tears but 1, and I've had Bosch, purolator (several), k and n, and all big 3 domestic filters have tears or problems. You're going on a myth... the filtration isn't top notch but it meet oem specs..

Anyways, if y'all find these for 1.50 scoop them up, that's a steal!

I found a couple at my local store mixed in with the new design. I didn't see a clearance section. Maybe I should have asked.

I read all the stuff regarding fram filters, but I used them pretty much exclusively with the '94 Accord I drove and it was over 230k and still going strong when I sold it 6 or 7 years ago. Of course, I use Mobil 1 filters on my replacement vehicle since bobtheoilguy seems to think those are better and they aren't that expensive, but the fram stuff seemed to work ok...

No kidding! After I lost my second engine with a Fram filter I stopped using them. I had a handful of of PH8A that I was trying to give to some Mopar guys at the track. Not one taker. Still have them. Probably rusting by now.

On models that require them, yes they do.

In a pinch for time, I went to Jiffy Lube (once)

They stuck a Fram on my 5.4L Triton that didn't not have the back flow.

I could tell the difference from the 1st time I started it up. I told them about it, and they said it met factory spec. They lied.

Personally, I wouldn't give you $1.50 for a truck load of Fram filters. But that's just silly old me.
Me too. They are not called " the orange can of death" for nothing. The regular Fram spin on filters use a piece of treated cardboard for the internal end cap on the element. Everybody else uses a stamped piece of steel.

The fact that the spin ons use a piece of cardboard where everybody else uses a stamped piece of steel is all the internal analysis I need. Honda uses them as OEM filters in the US. That must be the reason I see ads for Japan Honda filters. You don't have to buy some botique brand to get a good filter. I have used Wix for years and they supply NAPA. In any comparison test I have seen, they always score well and are very reasonable from Rockauto.

Did you notice the end cap on the element is cardboard? Any other one I have ever seen is steel. Cardboard is not in there as a technical advance.

Ordinary filters use only cellulose media, but FRAM Tough Guard adds microscopic synthetic fibers creating small windows that trap microscopic dirt particles without affecting the flow of oil. Tough Guard is the perfect filter for drivers who push their vehicles in stop and go traffic, towing and extreme weather conditions. FRAM Tough Guard Oil Filters:

Engineered for premium conventional and synthetic blend motor oil.
Synthetic-Blend filter media technology provides protection for oil change intervals up to 10,000 miles.

Is there an article, website, etc that details an analysis of Fram filters? Percentage of failures, issues, etc. compared with other filters?

many years ago I cut apart a bunch of different types of filters and looked at the internals after a fram lunched one of my engines. The build quality difference was staggering. I haven't even used a fram air filter since then, let alone an oil filter.

Used Fram on every beater car I ever owned and Fram was the best thing they ever had in there sorry life until they were sold. Cannot report a single failure due to Fram. Just change your oil+filter on time every time. Even a beater needs luv and care.

I find Fram filters like to seize up on every application I have used them for...only reason I don't currently use them and the fact use cardboard ends.

So yea they could be free and I wouldn't care

Go to youtube and search on fram oil filters. Plenty of cut-apart videos.

Spend a few minutes on youtube and then make your own decision.

You must not have read my post. I did cut them apart and did make my own decision. It was 8 or 9 years ago, but I haven't changed my mind about it.

Does not surprise me. Bought a 1991 taurus brand new. Ran it 351000 miles using fram filters and Penn soil oil from km art. Car never leaked a drop of oil. Never even removed a valve cover. Too bad I didn't know to cut the filters open and look for bad stuff. Car ran great when sold. I did get a few flat tires over the years. Probably frams fault.

Fram don't have a filter for either of my two cars, so I can't jump on this deal. At $1.50 and then some Mobil1 with the rebate, I'd be looking at $15 oil changes, and at $15 I could do the change every 3 months. The tough guard, from all reviews I've read, a very much not the orange fram filters.

I would assume Fram sells 100 times as many ''orange cans of death'' filters as the likes of Mobil1/K&N or pretty much any other filter. The failure rate must be tiny, and if there was a root cause with the filter, I'm sure I'd have heard of class action law suits by now.
