Can anyone tell me what the approximate weight is of an LS Starrett Athol 924 1/2. Found one for sale locally on FB. Currently asking $125 and I think I would be more interested under $100. I've been looking for a large heavy duty vise to restore and its hard to tell how big this guy actually is.

Anyone else occasionally become amused at what we tend to refer to as "clean", "beauties" etc.? When you think about it, most would just look at that and see a scabby, rusty old thing, yet most of us tend to skip that and just envisage what the piece will look like once it's fettled, which will be something completely different.

You guys are fortunate. Up here in the Pacific NW I've never actually SEEN a Wilton Bullet let alone come across one for sale.

Seems like the industrial jobbers were more prone to Record distributors here in B.C.

This is only the second that I have seen since I started accumulating 2 months ago. At $100 this is among my top two most expensive vises so far. The baby bullet being 2X the price of this one..overpaid but I came across it at the height of my frenzy and I had to have one.

This is the one that I was inquiring about last evening.

Can someone please educate me on the numbers?

It's a matter of being in context - If it hasn't been welded, cut, broken, beat to death... and only needs de-rusted/painted, it IS clean!

I picked up this Craftsman 2-7/16" drill press vise at the flea market today. Smooth action. Need to straighten the spindle. Otherwise in terrific condition. Looks like a 1940’s era Palmgren to me, but I'm no expert. Can someone back me up or correct me on that? And if someone has one of these, what is the number? Can't read it.

Left to right, a beaten and scourged open screw Columbian marked CAT NO 140 and The C.C.L HDW. CO and Columbian on the other side; a 3-1/2" open screw Shephard No 162; and a 4" American Scale

Valvoline, they at pretty rare.---That's only the forth one I've seen on this thread if memory serves.---Plus looks likes yours has a lot of the bells and whistles that are missing on some others.---Nice find, hang on to it.

seems they price out a lil more the the 474's….. are more scarce? on the tread there seems to be the same number of each found within 1-2 pieces.

I hope somebody on here got it. If that's the case and you're picking it up I'd love to meet one of you. What do they call those arrangements where people pick things up and drive them to the next guy, then the next, etc? We could do one of those!

I picked this up with the purchase of a 16"
South Bend lathe, It was bolted to the end of the
bed. It just came along for the ride!
The lathe is 96" between centers, fairly late
Model with hard ways.

Well – this is the one that started it. A barely used Columbian 04M2 (4” jaws). From a local thrift store at a fair price a few weeks ago. Believed to have been used for light wood working duty its entire existence, and the jaw inserts had been replaced with a thin plywood. I intend to use this for most of my light work on Coleman Lanterns (pun intended) and needed better inserts. Read that white plastic cutting boards were good for this and went forward. Much more time consuming than anticipated, with prototypes, using my older miter box, trip to the hardware store and a fun learning curve about use of clamps with the drill press!

I don't know Wrench, just why it went so high.---Haven't really kept up with the numbers of each through the posts.---I have 2 #474s and they wouldn't come near that price.---But that was a very clean specimen.---But I think the main reason is that they are coming up for sale less frequently now than before.

This old Prentiss 19 had really suffered in its past. Everything was seized. I was able to buy it at auction for $6.



It will never be a "great" vise but under the rust and welding slag it was still serviceable. A little work and some paint and it is saved from the scrap heap for a good while.

No. Believe it or not, these old Palmgren style vises were made to be held by hand, or in the T-slots of a press or a milling table or inside another vise that was permanently mounted. It's for moving pieces around during layout, also easy first step prep drilling. You'll see them also called toolmaker's vises. EDIT: Palmgren and others made similar looking vises with the little mounting ears or slots for strap clamps, and a model that tilts up to 90*.

Here is what I worked on this weekend. Finished my 600s in Hammerite Dark Blue (pd $250 and had an issue with rackage with the dynamic jaw), Restored this Parker #29 in Hammerite Green (pd $35), rebuilt this early 6x18 Browne and Sharpe magnetic chuck (pd $25)and bought this complete Emmert #2 for $160.

Always nice when the weather cooperates.

I have a plain #406 but I am not sure how it differs from a #406A.---I would have to see a pic.---I paid $300.00 for mine but it was in real good condition and already overhauled, and they are pretty good size so it didn't sting too bad.

Now depending on what you are going to use the vise for is going to determine a lot towards which vise you need.---For heavy duty work like a machine shop, I'd go with the 106R, but if lighter, home garage work, then the swivel jaw would suffice, plus you would have the swivel jaw novelty to boot.---The swivel jaw mechanism won't stand the punishment that a conventional static jaw will, however, Reeds are stouter all around than just about every other vise.---JMO.---By the way, is the 106R a swivel based vise, because the originally 106s were stationary but they latter changed to a swivel based but kept the same #s?

$500.00 is a lot of script but a 406 is a lot of vise, and you throw in a nice stand, (of course I'd have to see that too), and if the vise was in really good condition, you would probably be ok.---Sounds like the guy knows what he's got.

The5, have you made your decision already?---Pity you can't afford both.---That's a pretty good looking 406.---The serration on the jaws still looks good which is a pretty good indicator of past life.---If you were just going to do around home domestic work, the 406 would be a plenty, but if you are going to get into some heavy lifting, the 106 will be much stouter.---Maybe he will flex a little.

Coworker knows I now have a Vise Vice. He bought his Step-Dad's Wilton 645 at their living estate sale last week, and was curious as to any info on it. Thought it was from the 1970's, 5" jaws, made in USA, and barely used. He says he is looking forward to a vise that has some grip left in the jaws!
