Re: How to move this rock

So I did a very non-scientific test,
Stuck a 8' 2x4 under the corner with a piece of 4x4 for a fulcrum and lifted the corner of the rock about an inch with minimal effort.
If my 180 pounds and a 2x4 can do this, my truck and a tow strap should have no problem dragging it

Rodger that, I was thinking the same thing after you posted this. A Tundra should pull it. If you can get it on something that reduces drag, so much the better.

Re: How to move this rock

I purchased a rock about six inches shorter (vertical) than yours.
It weighed 1990 pounds.
When I got it home and dropped it off my truck where the wife told me she wanted it, she told me I wanted it about four feet away.
As I could not get between the rock and where she wanted it with the truck, I took a 12' piece of 2 x 2 x 1/4" wall tubing, drilled it for a hitch pin, slid it in my receiver, and with the help of a neighbor, pushed it to where it now sits in about 20 minutes.

Re: How to move this rock

I moved something that size just by wrapping a strap around it and dragging it with my car.

Re: How to move this rock

Use the tractor to push high, as if to roll it. If it rolls, go with it. IF the tractor bogs, hold it up, stuff some 4x4s under it as cribbing, then wrap it on the vertical with a long rope or strap, like a yo-yo, such that the rope comes out over the top of the rock, in the direction you want to move it. Then hook up the tractor and pull. The rope will translate the force it a lift / pull and you'll get your roll. Until you run out of rope and need to reset.

I once found a huge rock in the bottom of a hole that needed my jacuzzi in it, I used my one-legger pickup to drag it out.

Call local tow truck guys. You will find one willing to strap it and lift it and put it where you want.

Much better than breaking neighbors tractor or scratching up your rock

Re: How to move this rock

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how to calculate the weight of a rock? I'd be interested to know what it might weigh.

No but I can calculate the average wing speed velocity of a coconut laden swallow. :headscrat

I'm in the dig a hole camp. We have done it before. Get some friends and some beer...dig dig and dig some more. Undermine it until you're scared it will fall on you then get all the guys to push it in. Works like a charm. You may need to buy some burgers too but my guess is it's cheaper than renting anything big enough to relocate it to some other part of the yard you still don't want it.

If anyone has priced buying rocks lately, I'm sure that he doesn't want to bury it.

I have. And rocks are like everything else. They are only valuable to those who want them. They are worthless to those who don't. Not many people have a need for one rock. And it is usually certain rocks that are good for wall building that people really want. And this ain't one of them. I see ads all the time for free rock...assuming you come and get them.

Somebody beat me to it. :bounce:

You have this thing where the wife wants it yet ? Because if you do, you need to claim injury before she changes her mind and wants it moved again.

Re: How to move this rock

I used a 6000 lb. winch on a CJ7 Jeep to drag a larger boulder than yours off a dirt road. I had to attach a ****** block to a tree up a hill from the boulder and then down to a tow strap around the boulder and was able to easily drag the boulder to the side of the road.
Find someone with a winch on their 4x4 or a tow company and have them drag the boulder where you want it.

Re: How to move this rock

Move it 12'?
Easiest solution. A few pieces of pipe 2-3" in diameter, 3'-4' long. get 2 2x8s. Fulcrum the rock up with a 2x4/4x4, slip the 2x8 under and have them rest on the pipe. Have the pipe perpendicular to the 2x8 and roll the rock along it like you would at the beer store.
Done like dinner.

Re: How to move this rock

Hi All,

I just wanted to add my 2 cents about safety..........................

I see that many people use nylon straps to move loads and that is a very dangerous practice...................

Most nylon straps or rope will stretch 30% before they part (snap) and that stretch will immediately be taken up...

That means a 30' strap will stretch to 39' before parting and the strap becomes an unguided missile along with shackles that are attached........

Be very careful with nylon straps and stay away from being in line with the direction of pull................

Bob

PS:
I know that people will say that they have been doing it for years.....
But it only takes once to ruin your day........

Hmmm. I'll use a strap over a chain or cable any day. Know your load and use a capable strap for the job. Always know your load

Re: How to move this rock

My suggestion is to go to your local Home Depot & ask politely the truck mounted fork lift driver swing by your house when in the neighborhood. Their forklift is made for materials handling on or off paved areas & can easily pick up your rock for relocation. It might cost you a few bucks but the cost will be well worth it. You will do zero damage to any of your or the neighbor's equipment.
Home Depot is quite accomodating when it comes to their customer base.

Re: How to move this rock

Thanks, that's why I have a 4x4 Tundra

Seeing this, now, I'd say wrap it with a couple straps and either hook it to the receiver ball or run them to the pin in the hitch and drag it where you want. Then, repair the lawn, as needed. It will take longer to get the straps set right than pulling it to where you want.

I've moved a 750-pounder with ease with my 2wd Tundra.

Follow up!
It's been almost a year as life gets in the way of things, but today we moved the rock.
Turns out almost 1/3 of the rock was buried in the ground so dragging it was out as I found out doing a 4 wheel burnout.
I built a sled out of a price of plywood and rolled the rock on to the sled with the truck and a strap
Once the rock was out of its crater it was easy to drag where we wanted it.

I could tell you how to do it, but since the Egyptians figured it out, I imagine you will as well.

Re: How to move this rock

Probably going to get flamed for this but I bet you could move that with about 4 iron bars and a couple of friends. Did some work with the NYNJ trail conference. Amazing what the could move with some bars and tackle.

Put two bars under the rock pointing towards direction you want to move it like train sleds. Two guys on other side using two bars and leverage to push it along the rails. If I hadn't done it myself I'd never believe it. Alot of stuff was moved before the advent of compact tractors.

I'll try to find a link and post it outlining the process... In the mean time, good luck!

Nicely done. Where there's a will, there's a way. Getting them moving is the hard part. And what do I see poking it's lovely little fanny out of the garage? A Ford Woody? Anyway, I bet it was easier than you thought.

The hardest part was getting it out of the hole,
I levered it up with a 10' 2x4 on a 4x4 block and my wife shoved blocks under the rock,
We worked our way around it until I could wrap the strap around it to roll it up out of the hole. Then it was easy to drag.

The woody is a '54 Country Squire. I needed a family car ;)

Not quite Archimedes style....

Give me a lever and a place to stand and I will move the earth.

But good job! Best thing is nobody got hurt and no equipment was broken.
