I needed 75' of 10-3 to run the RV plug for the big trailer - cost less to buy a 100' roll at Lowes than spool it off their bulk rack. So IMHO, shop around. I didn't because I needed it done on a "yesterday" timetable.

Be honest prices for wire from an electrical supplier won't be cheaper than lowes or HD. I had to buy 300,000 feet of 14/2 romex in bulk to make it cheaper than HDs price. Suppliers are great for getting cuts though.

Lowe's prices are strange for wire. We were looking to run power out to our barn, and the their #4 THHW was actually CHEAPER per foot than their #6 THHW. Go figure that one.

OT, but...when I started wiring as a kid a 250ft roll or 12/2 Romex w/g was $18 a roll. I remember the outrage my dad had when it went to $25 ..."that's 10 cents a foot!!"

Guy across the street works for Big State - says they can't beat the big box on common items like "romex" - Lowes/HD buy in such huge quantity, regular suppliers can't get close. Same on base line things like 15A sockets, switches, etc.

Having worked in mfg for 20 years, I can guarantee that supply works as "them that has the gold makes the rules". When we were based in Houston, if Baker Hughes placed an order at the same supplier we tried to use, it was "sorry buddy, call us in a couple of months". You'd say take your money elsewhere - LOL, there is no elsewhere in oil town. We had PCB orders go unfilled because the circuit board suppliers had big lathes for working drill pipe in the back of their shops.

I believe it. I quoted a job using 250 kcmil copper. 350's were cheaper.

When copper scrap spiked the use of alu wire became good.

It has been a good while since and wire prices are not dropping although copper scrap is back to a normal range.

I have to wonder if this has to do with when supplies were bought and what has been re-ordered since. Older stock may carry the heavy price yet.
