Hi All,

I think I'm going to pull the trigger on this one. I plan to use it for temp rise when I'm working out there, otherwise it will be off. I called and this was the size they recommended. My garage is 28x54x15 with uninsulated rollup doors and windows.

Any other units I should be looking at? I plan to vent out the wall using the factory concentric 5" vent kit.

Well... I ordered it this morning with these options:

BRT-120
Factory built for propane
Replace steel flue collector with stainless steel collector (It was $18 bucks, not sure if I need it but stainless sounds good to me)
Concentric Vent Adapter Kit for 90-120 models
All Weather vent cap
Free Shipping

Total = $1456

Curious to see what is included with the vent kit, I plan to go horizontal out the wall.

Good luck -- have always like these. Bit more money .. but, they are nice. Many of the induced combustion units by others don't have the inlet air hookup. I like that they offer options for different fans .. and total sealed combustion should one need.

Plus another $273 for the Horizontal vent kit....

Sterling GG90-120 5 in. Horizontal Pipe Kit for Sterling GG90-120 Concentric Vent
Sterling GG90-120 45 Elbow Set - 5 in.

Do I need a wall thimble? I'm guessing yes if going through an insulated 2x6 wall?

Waiting for the vent kit to arrive... I unboxed it, flipped the heater 180 so the venting is on the right side of the unit and put the brackets on. Stopped by HD and grabbed a section of unistrut and some 3/8th rods.

Tomorrow I'll see if I can figure out a mounting spot and get it hung...

Are you going to have a tank solely for the heater?

Cool project, especially satisfying that you are doing it yourself and saving a ton

I have a 250 gallon mounted in the back yard. This is a weekend place so the house is usually at 50 and no heat in the garage. I use probably 500 gallons a year and heat with the wood stove when we are up.

I'm only going to use the garage heater to bring the temp up when I'm in there, not keep it heated 24/7. I'm not expecting an issue but we'll see.

Very nice looking building -- Wonderfull inside height ... boatbuilding?

"heat" is not universal. What's acceptable for for one is not for another. The best one can do is get a load calculation guide .......punch in the numbers ... use the guide to pick a size based on the rise that's acceptable.

Some have no problem working all bundled up with cold tools .. just being out of the weather is enough. I need more ... not doing strenuous work -- sweat shirt is the most for me.

120k is serious heat ... That will warm the air. Getting some insulation in there will make a huge difference.

I use 37-40k propane to heat my well insulated 1700sf studio -- but, I maintain the temp.

Well... It's hung! What a ton of work this turned out to be! We made a cardboard template to help position the unistrut so the vent goes out the bay I want. I don't have the vent kit yet so I hope the 45 angle works out ok. I've never done anything like this before so it's a lot of learning.

I quickly realized for this to look clean and neat, I'm going to need to install the ceiling now. Of course that meant taking down lights, installing some installation, installing 4x8 plywood without a drywall lift 15 feet in the air... Ugg.

Once all that was worked out, lifting it into place was pretty easy with the winch.

Leveled it out... Might need to move it a bit once the vent kit shows up but for now it looks good.

I also had to run the thermostat wire, I bought 50 feet and was 2 feet short. At least it made it to a box on the wall so I can just splice a few more feet to the heater. I also had to run a jumper wire inside the unit to make the "C" terminal actually do something. How dumb it's on the back but the wire isn't connected inside...

I picked up a 12/2 Whip with 1/2 knockout connector on it already and wired up all the connections inside...

So next up is venting, propane, and finish finish the electrical.... Getting there.

I found out that NH has a law that your gas provider needs to hook up the appliance. I had to pull a permit and wait for an appointment. They came out this morning and stubbed the propane and did a leak test. So far so good....

I'm going to finish the insulation and put up some of the wall so I can have them come back and hook it up to the heater. I'm hoping I can get an appointment next week...

Got down to 26 last night, I need to get this done. :shocking:

Things are changing everywhere ......At my place in PA now .... for new tank and service the supplier needs to approve the line and hook up and do the regulators. We had to burry a 2" poly pipe for the gas line -- because they need three weeks notice.

If it's an old line they just check -- but if the permit calls for a new line they have to do it.

Slowly chipping away.... Called the Propane company 3 times in the past 24 hours and nobody has called me back yet to setup an appointment to finish this thing. :shocking:

I still need to clean up the wiring but the heater is powered and thermostat wire connected. Insulation and part of the wall is now up so the vent can get installed. You can see the propane coming through the wall and the red burner switch on the wall. It should look nice and clean when it's all done and painted.

Installed my nest thermostat on the "control wall" and it seems to work or at least it has power. :rocker:

Woo Hoo! I have heat! :rocker:

Gas hooked up and venting done! I just need to clean up the wiring and it's finished. It fired right up and is actually WAY quieter than I was expecting.

Bring on the cold and snow!

^^^ Way cool. Yes the new units are pretty dam quiet compared to my same but 7 or 8 year old "same" unit. Everything from the ignitor clicks to the fan blade spinning is super quiet vs older units
