I think GmanBart had commented on his 4" Superior weighing as much as most of his 5 inchers...or something of the sort.

Good memory! I had a Parker 824 and I weighed it at 84lbs as I recall, which is crazy for a 4" vise. I sold it to a gentleman who restores Model A Fords, and he likes the older stuff. He knew the difference between the Superior and Eclipse line and was thrilled to get it!

Looks very similar to this 3" vise I picked up a couple weeks ago. I have a very faint Luther logo on mine that you can barely make out.90906aebf69d4651e4e7d80e28b4014d.jpg98cdf3525e13628ae6c4d5723cdd2f96.jpg

I was scrounging through a brushed in farm today, looking for a steel rack that the owner said was out there.
I found the rack and in the process stumbled on to this vise.
Cast in, well worn jaws
Single swivel lock
Split nut collar
Meatball spindle
1/2 the handle gone
Swivel base cracked in two places
Is not seized,which surprised me
Now to see about swinging a deal

Hey guys found this guy in my basement. I have no memory of where or when it came into my possession. Any info would be great I see no marking. Jaws open 1", when open it is 6 1/4" long.

That looks similar to a lineman's tool. I guess it would be handy to grab onto the end of a cable to give it a good yank. More experienced guys (like maybe somebody with first hand experience) might chime in on this question.

Columbian #205. From an add I found, I believe it is from 1937. The jaws are like new. It is missing one of the pipe jaws. Any ideas on where to get a replacement? I couldn’t pass it up for $20!

The vise craze (specially Wilton) is geting out of control by the day! This guy wants $750 for 3" Wilton 101002 with no dust cap and both swivel arms missing (the jaw inserts look really nice though) and only for some reason opens 2 1/2" (Max OP. 2 1/2).

The best part is that he seems to be a Wilton expert as he states
"This particular vise is a very early one, manufactured in the old Wilton-Schiller Park factory as shown on casting. (Not Chicago)" :willy_nil

You don't have to go far, as GJ's own Reverend Kevin Scott (KMSCOTT) is the world expert for making replacement parts for vises. Here is his web site

He has most of his details wrong, but it's actually a fairly rare vise. It's a 2" jaw made in Schiller Park. I've yet to come across one of those in the wild, but have seen a few pictures of them....pretty hard to find. I don't think it's worth close to $750, but it's still worth more than a typical 2" would be.

I don't think Kevin is doing that style of pipe jaws any longer. They aren't on his site and he's almost eliminated his custom work because he's working nearly 7 days a week just to keep up with the standard offerings.

Is this (ie being 2") why the Max Op is only 2 1/2"? (i.e. is this the normal range for 2" Wilton?).

It is very odd that he would advertise it as 3"! I guess he might not know 2" is a lot more desirable but then again as you said he has most his details wrong too.

ROCKINMUD, that is an awesome deal you got there.---Fine looking jaws, and 5''.---That's all the vise you will ever need for any situation, IMO.---Columbians don't get the love that a lot of other vises get, but I give them respect.---They don't have the collector value that others do, but they make excellent workhorses.---I use a Columbian every day.

Now as far as that missing pipe jaw is concerned, well you are in luck, because you have the exact duplicate for template.---You are one of the fortunate ones.---If you are crafty at all and can CREATE shop fashion, you can make your own.---Trace it, cut it out, hand file, temper, the whole nine yards.---A lot of these guy's would sacrifice a digit for a full set of pipe jaws.---Now get in your shop and show us that third pipe jaw!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The5fars, that is a sweet 606 you found too.---Jaws are crisp, not beat up.---Another fine workhorse.

Congrats to both of you.

I haven't measured the max opening of my 2" baby, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's in the range of 2.5" to 3" give or take.

I suspect he's going to get a lot of e-mails through eBay telling him he's got all sorts of details wrong, but that will likely make him want to raise the price even more

This brochure includes both stationary and swivel, your 259X is listed
Parker-11.jpg

Thanks for posting that info.
I traded a 6" Wilton bullet for a 249X with Nick (autopts) several years ago, and after I did I got rid of 95% of my other vises, as this one is just an excellent vise and everything else just kinda paled in comparison. I use it every day, which in a way is kinda sad, as I'd like to take the time to strip and repaint it, but I can't because it's in constant use!
Thanks again Nick!

Royce, somebody must have dropped it hard to crack that base. From the picture I can't tell how extensive the damage is on yours. I own a Reed 206 and it is a beast of a vise. Mine came out of an automotive repair shop, and it is in excellent condition. It was covered with grease, which actually helped protect it from rusting too badly all of those years. I paid $75.00, which is what the seller was asking. You should be able to strike a much better deal.

Wrapped up this Rock Island 544B with Pipe jaws. It is basically a over size 577 since it takes the same jaws. This guy was in very good shape and sat in the Coors Golden plant. It had a broken foot which I repaired by brazing.

The Patina was ripe for a nice finish and decided to not paint this one but instead added a black metal oil from Sculpt Nouveau. Check them out. The pipe jaws were missing so made a set that can clamp a 6" pipe. The original jaws were in great shape but added my own new ones since mine are harder and in my opinion a better steel. This vise is big, 15-1/2" tall and 205 lbs with a max opening of only 10 inches. FMC need to add this to your spread sheet. Great vise.

I've got the Starrett 326, 214 lbs.---That and yours have to be among the biggest combos out there.

Yep going up for sale. Thinking about what to ask. It is a hard one to gauge, guys have been buying vises lately for $20 and $40 bucks. Gonna ask more since it has new jaws and is a big vise. Autopts wants me to build a stand for it and kind of kicking that around but would need to go to Denver to buy steel. Have you guys priced steel lately. Steel is expensive.

Fellas, I just bought this Columbian 606 yesterday. I am in the process of restoring it and I'm trying to remove this screw. It is super tight and stuck, I don't want to break it. I have been spraying PB Blaster to try and loosen it. Ill try that for several days to see if it works, if I can't get the spindle out then I was going to throw it into an electrolysis bath anyways as is and hope it comes out then. Any thoughts from you guys would be appreciated. Thanks, Matt

Got this little gem for a steal and cleaned it up, waiting on jaws from KMScott. Once I get the jaws I am going to unload it and fund my next vise. I have a Reed 106R coming. I am not a wilton fan, I have a soft spot for Charles Parkers. They are hard to come by in California. There is a Chas Parker 974 1/2 by me but the guy was too much.

Re: 206 Reed

Royce, looks pretty grown in and forgotten .... it wouldn't surprise me if you get a "you ****" deal and we see that on one of your sweet stand creations soon!! Good luck :)

It had willow bent around the handle and a good growth of lichen on it's surface.
I was able to bring it home today and it is in pretty good shape other than the broken handle, cracked swivel base and a small chunk out of the jaw!
It came apart as easy as any vise I've ever taken apart.
The split nut has brass over it and a thick bronze thrust washer with grease worms milled in it.
The other Reed's I have with split collars, do not have these features.
Anyhow here's a few pics
Thank you

Royce

Maui,
The base ended up being cracked in three places.
I picture a mechanic with a 1" drive break over and a 5 foot cheater, while his helper whales on it with a large double jack!

Kevin,
That looks fantastic,
The black oil finish,
The grain finish on the spindle, handle and lock bolt,
The temper colors on the jaws.

That old girl needs put to work.

Thanks again for sharing

Thanks for posting that info.
I traded a 6" Wilton bullet for a 249X with Nick (autopts) several years ago, and after I did I got rid of 95% of my other vises, as this one is just an excellent vise and everything else just kinda paled in comparison. I use it every day, which in a way is kinda sad, as I'd like to take the time to strip and repaint it, but I can't because it's in constant use!
Thanks again Nick!
