Brother you seem to suffer from the same form of dementia I do, noabilityofshitcanninganythingitis. This rare disease affects the brains ability to coordinate the motor skills required to use ones right hand to place items into a receptacle held by the left hand. The cause of this dreaded disease is brought on by catching both the everythingihaveisworthafortune and iknowillneedthatsomeday virus. But gauging your actions at this point of attempting to hide this massive clutter of **** it is obvious that one day we will most likely hear you succumbed to heopenthedooryotheshopandwasburiedaliveAticalitis

Goooooood luck :p

I seem to be in remission from all these dreaded diseases, now if I could cure my FSD Flatsurfacedisease I would be all better.

Notice I said remission, I know I could have a set back any day, so I keep taking the proper medication, Ineedthespacetostorethingsthatareuseful and iknowihaveitbecauseitisinitsproperlocation.

FSD is the bane of my existence. I solved the issue in the pole building by only having a 30 x 60 portable table and two HF 4 drawer black carts. Anything I put on the floor gets put away at the end of the day and when the carts get piled high, they are unusable, forcing me to stop and straighten them.

You've talked about your "analysis paralysis", self help books and To Do lists many times over the years, in addition to the old thread helping to motivate. I found this completely opposite finding to be interesting when I read it today:

"Shouldn't you announce your goals, so friends can support you? Isn't it good networking to tell people about your upcoming projects? Doesn't the law of attraction mean you should state your intention, and visualize the goal is already yours? Nope.

Tests done since 1933 show that people who talk about their intentions are less likely to make them happen.

Announcing your plans to others satisfies your self-identity just enough that you're less motivated to do the hard work needed.

In 1933, W. Mahler found that if a person announced the solution to a problem, and was acknowledged by others, it was now in the brain as a "social reality", even if the solution hadn't actually been achieved.

NYU psychology professor Peter Gollwitzer has been studying this since his 1982 book "Symbolic Self-Completion" - and recently published results of new tests in a research article, "When Intentions Go Public: Does Social Reality Widen the Intention-Behavior Gap?"

Four different tests of 63 people found that those who kept their intentions private were more likely to achieve them than those who made them public and were acknowledged by others.

Once you've told people of your intentions, it gives you a "premature sense of completeness."

You have "identity symbols" in your brain that make your self-image. Since both actions and talk create symbols in your brain, talking satisfies the brain enough that it "neglects the pursuit of further symbols."

A related test found that success on one sub-goal (eating healthy meals) reduced efforts on other important sub-goals (going to the gym) for the same reason."

I tend to keep my goals to myself for completely different reasons:

A) life throws you a curveball constantly. I don't think I've ever set a goal for a specific week that didn't get delayed by something. Similar to the "It always costs twice as much and takes twice as long as budgeted" statement.

B) It sets false deadlines that just annoy/depress me. "I need to get this done today" Doesn't happen. Results in someone saying "Weren't you going to do this today?" Bad feelings ensue.

C) Sometimes I just abandon an idea as not what I'm going to do after all

That being said, I do need the van out of my garage before the snow flies...

My wife is one who is always talking about what she's going to do and never does. I keep my plans close to my chest but she is constantly asking me what I have planned for when . When I just say nothing she thinks I'm trying to hide something . Tryed explain but she doesn't get itb. Oh well .

<snip> I either have ADHD or some sort of wish to distract myself constantly. The only reason I don't think that I have ADHD is because I can sit down and concentrate on one thing for hours at a time, I just need to be into what I am doing. If I don't "want" to do it, then I find something else that is more "fun" to do.

Boiler, those simple projects are nice, sometimes when I get a small one done, it motivates me to move on to a larger one and it can snowball from there. I have anxiety issues and most are created by the stuff surrounding me. You start thinking about finishing a project, then another, then another, and before you know it you are in a corner in the fetal position crying.

BB, I used to keep my magazines like that too, then I started to realize that the articles were all the same, the editors just seemed to wait a year or so and start repeating them. At that point I guess I gave up and tossed a ton. I am not even sure if I have any magazines left.

<snip>

Uh... Strouty, that is ADHD... it's called Hyper Focus. You are 100% consumed with the interest of the moment, but then, squirrel, and something else takes your fancy and 100% intensive focus. That's part of my sig, too many hobbies, not enough time. I've been working on narrowing down the things that I actually try to spend my time on. It's part of the process of getting rid of the stuff.

I have to go in with the intention of just that one small project. You have to ignore everything else and just get the one little thing done, but I have also been caught just standing in my garage or the basement just staring at everything. Not moving, barely breathing, just overwhelmed.

<snip> but honestly, this heat has dragged me down to a puddle of sweaty uselessness. <snip>

I thought it was supposed to be Fall? The best season on the year... but nooooo, Summer has decided to stick around. I hate the heat and humidity... it was 89degF here Saturday with a heat index of 99!

I think I went through 6 shirts in 2 days. And I take the breaks and sit in front of a fan while drinking plenty of water.

When I build my new office, there is going to be some sort of bed in there, probably a murphy type bed, not sure yet, but getting off my feet would be awesome. Between my back and the heat, a nap would probably take care of me, just no comfortable place to lay down.

I am feeling a bit better, I turned on some tunes and I am going to try and put some tools away. I just have to keep reminding myself, just start, the rest is easy.

Ironically, one of the plans that I did keep from my woodworking magazine is for a Murphy Bed.

Well it is super hot and humid again and I am hyper focused on getting stuff to the auction. No AC in the truck, leather seats adhere to my body, yuck.

Auctions are dangerous for me.

As for Kev’s point, I think he has hit the nail on the head with me. After reading a bit more about the idea, I do tend to state a goal, then never get it done, even simple ones. It is an extension of my procrastination, once the goal/project has been discussed with people, in my head I feel I started it. Then my brain uses that to screw things up. I am not a completer, I never have been. I have gotten better at it, but now it seems I am not a starter either, at least not in the physical sense. I guess I am a make excuser?

Man, I am getting worse. This morning I was going over what I need to do at the shop, then I went off on a tangent. Next thing I know I was thinking about TV antennas at a House I don’t even own. I do need to work on my focus, at that point I had already forgotten what the original task was.

Strouty, I feel for ya. I used to be the same way. Start ten projects because I had all of these ideas in my head and a year later NONE of them were completed. I would go off on tangents of a project here and one there and never come back to any of them for completion/closure.

About 20 years ago after having two major race car/show car projects sitting there incompleted and not having the money to complete my next project that was in my head it hit me like a ton of bricks. I started adding up all of the money in parts sitting there and realized I could easily complete one and maybe two of the projects if I would have not started the other half completed projects.

At that point I started prioritizing and by doing that I started a list of projects with action items or "to do" items spelled out in easy to follow and easy to complete order. My wife stated the old adage to me about how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. So in response to that I started by not looking at the project as a big overwhelming project but breaking it up into smaller sub-components and assigning a task to them on paper, which turned into a white board a few years ago.

I also have found that I don't erase them right away as I accomplish them, I leave them on the board for a few days and actually just put a line through them as I complete them. This gives me a visual comparator that helps me to see I am making progress. It has become so second nature now that I actually feel like a fish out of water if I start working on something that is not on the list. I use my to do list for all of my vehicles, my home, my shop as well as smaller projects that I want to accomplish. If I am waiting on parts or have an uncontrollable delay I will look at my list and decide on a task that should take the same amount of time as the delay. This way I don't waste time and stay on task.

This is just a suggestion as this has worked wonders for me. I feel like I get so much more accomplished on a daily basis now and like I mentioned, I feel uneasy about working on something that isn't on the list.

I don't know if you have tried that or not but it sure worked for me.

Great progress here. Ive been lurking for awhile and wanted to say hello and chime in on murphy beds.

I once built a murphy style bed with wooden hinges all made KISS style (keep it stupid simple) out of 2x6 and 1 sheet of plywood. Held a queen size mattress. I didn't make a counterweight system so it took a little effort to move it but a few pullies and some weights and it would work slick.

The hing mechanism was just 2 vertical 2x6s spaced about 2 inches apart with a 1.25 inch wooden dowel pin going through them. In the 2 inch gap was the rotating 2x6 member that held the plywood mattress pad and mattress. If there's interest i may have some pics, but that build was 4 or 5 years ago.

Also be careful with thise 5 hour energy drinks. They are really not to far off from cocaine. Deathly addictive and the tolerence buildup is quick. You may find you need one to get out of bed, another to get your shoes on, and so forth.

Z, this is the exact same thing I said to myself a few weeks ago, it is mind boggling the amount of money that gets spent when you have no rhyme or reason to the projects.

At that point I started prioritizing and by doing that I started a list of projects with action items or "to do" items spelled out in easy to follow and easy to complete order. My wife stated the old adage to me about how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Essentially what I am working towards now, I am blending the GTD (Getting Things Done - David Allen) ways with some of my other ideas. I am currently organizing a digital to do list, I like to use my technology for the overall picture. I still use my white board and I think it will become a bigger player in the future of the Salvage Garage.

Great progress here.

Thanks, it can be tough to see progress when you are in the middle of the mess so that means a lot.

I agree with you, I think right now I use one on average, once a week.

As far as the murphy bed, that is too far down my list to really think about it right now. Can't use up what little ambition that I have on something sill like future plans. ;)

First load to the auction - done. Now I am going to try and load up a few more things just to get them over there. Tonight I have help and will be loading up the Lista cabinets that are out in front of the shop. After that it should just be smaller things, like hand tools and miscellaneous supplies. I am contemplating taking over the old jib crane, I do have a nice spot for it here, but I think it is not really heavy duty enough for my usage. If I take that, it will be last, because I am also leaving the trailer there, too much work needs to be done to it and it is also a bit under my standard weight capacity.

My afternoon help just canceled, now I am going to have to wrestle the Lista cabinets myself. Shouldn’t be terrible, but the heat is not helping. Pictures from first trip, burb is full too.

I spent a bit of time inside, sorting through the M/V28 tools that I am sending to the auction. Looks like there is more than I remembered, they have served me well, but I am well invested into the M18 lineup now. With those new 9.0 batteries, I have rarely even used the M/V28 tools. I will have to buy a few new tools to replace these old ones, I like excuses to buy tools, so this is an easy decision, plus it allows me to simplify things. I also found a Fein drill set that I am sending, I think I have used it once since I bought it, time to go.

I am glad I take notes, it looks like the local auction goers think that FEIN is a junk brand, last time I brought a couple grinders they did nothing. So the FEIN drill will go on eBay along with my super fancy imported directly from Australia M28 die grinder. I think those will do much better selling on eBay than the rest of the stuff as they are almost new. My body feels like a really greasy grilled cheese sandwich that has been overcooked. I am taking a few minutes to rehydrate, then I am going to bring a few things into the shop so I can get them prepped for the auction. I know you guys are thinking I should get rid of the stacks, but the Stainless guards and the chrome upper stacks are actually in really good shape. I am going to take them apart so they store easier. I have at least one long term truck project that could use a stack or two, the mufflers are falling apart, so those will go in the scrap pile for sure.

Sad to see all those Listas go, but I understand why.

On the plus side, even though they were outside, just removing all that bulk should give you a feeling of accomplishment when you look around.

Onward and Upward !

At this point, I have Lista overload so it doesn't make me too sad. I am glad that a couple of them made it to GJ homes. I had never intended to keep as many as I did, but it seems like I have just enough now. Hopefully they will do decent money at the auction, you can never tell, but if they don't bring much, I still know that they are gone and I don't have to deal with them!

Only the cabinets are going, just six of them. I am keeping five and two went to other GJ members. I don’t think I will ever sell any drawers, they are too important to my future plans.

Pines, I will let you know, but it may be a bit as I have a lot going on right now.

This morning I have to go to the new tower site and figure out how much of the existing access drive needs to be widened to meet the Fire Chief’s demands. Government at its best. Then I get to work in the heat again trying to get everything loaded for my second trip to the auction.

I hope so, today was still brutal. The auctioneer and I discussed it and he would like me to double stack one set of the cabinets. I am willing to try it, best part is that I get to keep two of the stainless tops. I may end up with a bunch more small items, if I had more time, I could unload some more things, but at this point I have a good slot at the auction, much later and it will be in the area that doesn't bring in the money.

Also moved and shuffled just about everything that is outside, seriously, even the poop sauna got moved. I had ordered a fifth wheel to goose neck adapter and it works well, the 5 ton is ridiculously high, but to shuffle the trailer around in the yard it will be fine.

No problem Pines.

Road inspection went pretty well, this was just the initial visit now that we know they want it all to be 14' wide. About one quarter of it is absolutely fine, on section has a culvert that is too narrow, so we will have modifications there, the rest of it was essentially being modified to meet erosion control standards anyways, so we will just add a bit more width. I just hope the engineer sees it this way, we have underground utilities on both edges of the roadway, so if i have to do digging and then add 18" of gravel as a base, it will be a slow mess with lots of hand digging.

The listas are all prepped for the auction, I will say, after stacking the final two cabinets, I am going to stack one set in the shop, it just looks awesome and having the cabinets up above waist level makes them useful. I took a picture, but it was pretty crappy in the dark, will take a better one tomorrow. I am headed home, final push tomorrow, plus I have about two days worth of errands and paperwork to get done. :eyecrazy:

I love the old 5 Tons. One day in the future I'll buy one and bob it.

This one is getting that treatment, but then I may go all military blasphemous on it and swap to a civilian cab setup. I want it to be a bit more refined and the military cab is a bit less than that. I can't bob it until I either get rid of the moving van trailer or park it semi permanently. The plan is to replace it with another 40' high cube conex. I hope I can get that done next year.

Sounds like it is doable at least, the last road I cut in we had to remove 3 feet off the top for 400 yards and bring in fill, real glad I didn't have to write that check.

Good luck in the auction as you are bring stuff to get rid of tomorrow I will be going to pick up my purchases, fume extractor, some steel for a future project and a few misc things.

I don’t even think I will attend the auction, just too easy to bid on this, then that........

I even think the trailer is going in the auction. I don’t have anything I need it for and if I really need a trailer, I can borrow one. I also have parts to make a single axle trailer that I have not used yet. At this point the less stuff that needs repairs and rebuilds the better off I am.
