I didn't mean to insinuate you hadn't seen them, sorry... I don't type well, so my responses are typically short and misunderstood, just like me, LOL!
I just made a point to collect that particular feature, so I like to show em off when I can, like a proud papa!

No worries...I wasn't bothered by it.

I'm just trying to mentally sort out the order of the various Reed jaw configurations. We've all seen the cast in place jaws. Now I've seen the replaceable that don't have a shelf, replaceable that do have a shelf, and some that are T style inserts, and then the modern versions they seem to be phasing out that are replaceable with a shelf, but different than the older models.

I think the question I have is whether the earlier replaceable with a shelf came before or after the replaceable without a shelf....

Thanks...that's helpful. I'm trying to narrow down what year the first Tradesman came out and yours is pretty early. I recall reading something that Wilton first came out with something like a Tradesman that had a number like 2040, and they went away very quickly in favor of what we now know as the Tradesman line....not sure though.

Not an 8-incher. No unicorn for sure. But it's a darn nice Stanley 700 corner vise I picked up today for $10. Pretty clean, and it has what looks like an unused set of masonite jaw protectors on it. I don't know why, but I think these are cool and useful 5" vises.

I bought a little Stanley 700 along with this champion, recently as well mine is grey and has a bullet nose spindle. I agree these are neat little vises..

I picked up another Craftsman version of those this summer. I let my son take the 700 like the grey and blue ones shown and put the new Craftsman in the rig as my "road vise" It's thin cast like some of the older CI versions, but of aluminum. Nice and light...

ALL: I agree too that it's a 518, but not sure if that means it has 8 inch jaws or does it on those old Prentiss bulldogs?

or sometimes those old castings a 6 can look like an 8 so maybe one of the guys that can blow up that picture to post it can help if it makes a difference.

jaws look a bit rough, but i didn't see a crack in the top of the dynamic slide so it might be an ok user.

HAHA! It only swilvels about 75% of what it used too, but that's just about on par with the rest of me, so it's cool!

They were just some parts me and my buddy found at the scrapyard and some self tapping screws (several shots of Dilaudid and maybe a few Bud Lights...), it should rust away and be absorbed by my body, like those stiches that disappear, but this is way worse for you, so I AM IN!

Zoomie, pop you a couple of those feel goods and a shot of everclear, and install you some of those pull pins here and there and reclaim that missing 25% mobility.

Do you like the "Photoshop" my surgeon did with her ballpoint pen, to draw the little bone on the left, into the spot it is "suppose to be"?
I guess she forgot about that when she had me open...?

I love the show but it bugs me that the camera zooms so fast by the vises and so far from them that I can never get a good look (and yes this is understandable as vises are obviously not at all the focus of the show). And any close up shots are obviously focused on the blade that is say being straightened etc and most of the vise (except for part of the jaws) is not in the frame.

They for sure use good looking anvils (even though again I have never been able to read the anvil brand name either). So I am assuming they also use one ore more brands of high quality US made vises.

I've been stuck at home for 4 weeks (this Friday) and am not supposed to do anything due to shoulder surgery. However, I've managed ways to be productive in spite of not being able to use my left arm.

Here's the Craftsman 506-51830 4" Columbian-made vise I purchased last week for $50. It came mounted to a Craftsman bench grinder stand that is anxiously awaiting the arrival of a 1 HP block grinder to take the place of the vise.

I threw together a quick electrolysis bath for the vise and have everything cleaned and primered in black. I haven't decided on a final color yet. I'm letting it bake in the sun for a day or two before deciding.

Also, I am looking for new "crown-top" badge if anyone knows of a source.

And speaking of Craftsman vises, I also disassembled and cleaned (in electrolysis bath) my Reed-made Craftsman No. 5180 3.5" vise that I bought for $15.

The worst of it is the retaining nut that threads into the dynamic jaw is broken in half. At first, I thought I broke it taking it apart but upon further inspection, I realized it has been the way for decades, if not from the day it was shipped out. I will get better pictures when I reassemble it, but it is a unique way to retain the handle and screw inside the dynamic jaw. It's got almost no backlash because of this design. This is my first Reed.

The show started out with vintage U.S. vises, but that has changed. Now all the bench vises are imported. I think the post vises are imported as well, but it's hard to tell. I'm pretty sure the anvils are JHM brand, made in Texas. Every time I watch the show I cringe when I see the cheap imported bench vises! If Wilton (or Yost, Reed or Morgan) was smart they'd donate four vises to the show...or sponsor it enough to get them some TV time.

Every Reed that I have ever had or seen that has that adjustment screw for backlash has a split nut. I currently have two worked on three

Odd as it may seem at first, it's the best way. It ensures perfect alignment of the halves, and you can't fit pieces together the wrong way round, (not something you'd do with a piece like that, but something easily done with a flat ring, for example), as they wouldn't mate correctly.

Dumpster find... Reed Model 31

My mailman alerted me to a vise sitting in a dumpster 1/2 mile from my house.
The slide is rusted up tight but the 3 1/2 inch wide jaws are in excellent condition and all the pipe jaws are still there. Here is a pic of the vise after washing off the dirt.
The threaded stud that goes through the workbench top is there and undamaged, but as usual, the elaborate wing nut is missing.

Shift: if you want to learn to cast some old iron i've got the wing nut on my Reed 31 that you can borrow for a mold. of course i don't have the pipe jaws that are MIA and probably in Area 51.
