Just got back from honeymoon in Hawaii. Spent an entire day at Pearl Harbor and was happy to see some old school iron onboard the USS Bowfin submarine

Thanks for posting those pics. When I was at the Pearl Harbor Memorial a few years ago I didn't get a chance to tour the sub. Great to see the old iron. Seeing the Rock Island, I realized that I have a R.I. 542 BX in my little collection. It looks good with battleship gray and darkened steel. The black Birtman Electric tag looks to be in fantastic shape, unlike many of the ones we all see in the wild.

Speaking of Wilton 600s I cleaned this guy up for a guy who bought a drill press from me. These are some solid vises

What caused the big gap between the bottom of the jaws and the jaw support shelf?

I've had a few with the bolt holes off and had to get Dr. Kevin to make custom jaws so everything lined up again...don't know what many of us would do without him!

TINK: you only are posting cool vises lately it seems so thanks and keep posting if you have or find more. i know Tourqueman (DOC CRAFTSMAN BLOCK) has one of those, but i think only his dynamic jaw swivels so maybe he'll see your post and chime in.

yep i bet more of a few of us wouldn't mind owning that one cause it has so many options. i'm not even a Parker fan and i like that one and their double barrell roller.

good find

Cyan: I owned a MORGAN 50 that was painted battleship grey and came off the USS Independence, but that ship was launched after WWII so guessing Rock Island, Parker and a few other companies had Uncle Sam's business prior to and during WWII. thanks for posting and does look like a GJ member spiffed them up.

Here is my latest acquisition a Morgan 145. To add to my other two Morgan's a 160 and a 150. 5cf59b5c95862a32fc45efb601042474.jpg786ad5f11112bcf05801ea2e4e7bba00.jpga240ba97b84eb4154b84243973ed8301.jpgb4b025a0b9ddfd7d46c1563fd57f4551.jpg

I think Tink's vise was intended for holding curved pipe. Notice the relief on the slide upper corner.

The design also allows gripping the pipe close to a fitting.

The gap is from the tops of the jaws being rounded off from being used as a tool since 1972. The new owner didn't like it rounded so he flipped them over. I said when he is ready for new jaws to contact this guy http://www.wiltonviseparts.net/ heard he is pretty good at this stuff :bounce:

Guys, jaws are rectangle blocks with a couple holes and some angled cuts called serrations. Pretty much easy stuff to make as a machinist. Thanks for the kudos.

Shipped a 300lb box through Fastenal and it was only $150. Pretty good deal.

I haven't done serrations yet but I've made a few jaws I imagine serrations can't be too hard since I have access to a mill

TinkTink there is one of those double swivel jaw Parkers at the Bodie California Ghost Town.---You can see it on Page 1767, Post 35333.--Posted by Timdp.---It belongs to the state of California.---Check the link below.

Drive, I think that The Torqueman2002's vise is a Columbian Swivel jaw with funky block jaws under the regular jaws.---Page 1306, Post 26110.---I think.:dunno:

Thanks in advance.

VA: while your searching skills on this vise thread might be second to none DR. Block (Torqueman2002) might own a Columbian swivel jaw, but i remember his Parker and it's pictures were on the Homemade Electrolysis thread so a little easier to find. it's a Parker #52 and only the dynamic does the head turning and not both like Tink's does.

Provi: interesting that Tink's vise might have been designed to take apart and put together or just hold pipe elbows.

Mark: i wish we had a REED thread cause i used to know what that A meant. sorry i'm either at a total loss or maybe just another SENIOR MOMENT. nice vise though

no. 86 has both pipe Jaws and Vise jaws and the interchange and both the static and dynamic swivel. I have a photo of the one in a old Parker catalog. I’ll post here in a few.

G-ManBart. Thanks for posting that pic.

I realize both rubber bumpers are at one end of the handle until you install it but....

it gave me inspiration to double up on mine.

Mark, I started looking into this awhile back and never did figure out the answer. Someone here posted some Reed scans, one was from 1943 which shows the vises that were allowed to be made during war. My thought was the "A" might have stood for allowed. My other theory was that the "A" was when Reed changed the design. It seems they went to 4 footed swivel and then into horizontal wording with older bulb nose, and then the flat nose with oil ports. Most Reeds I've seen after the "Revision" are marked "R".
Like I said, no proof only theories to this point.

Damnesia, that Red Seal is a keeper.---I have a soft spot for those Red Seals, kind of like those Lion heads.---They scratch me where I itch.

The Red Seal vise is awesome, very well built. I haven't taken it apart yet but there appears to be a spring on the lead screw and I'm wondering if it was put there by the manufacturer because this vise has seen very little use and probably hasn't been taken apart since new. This was part of a deal that was supposed to be an old 4" Wilton and this one for 150$ but someone offered the guy more money for the Wilton after we made a deal and he sold it out from under me. Not really upset, this was the vise I was after and I don't really like Wiltons.

It's sort of odd that I haven't seen one for sale up in this area but the day after I bought this one, another popped up on CL. I paid more for this 4" vise then I've paid for any vise ( 80$ ).

Damnesia: your vise collection is growing and one of these days we'll have to meet since I'm sitting on my laptop staring at Gilligan's island while i'm writing this. NICE FIND!! also you can toss any Wilton vises especially C series vise finds my direction if you might find any you can't use.

Mark: i'm still searching my memory for what the A means on the Reed vises and can't recall, but i bet if you PM JasonEOC or he sees your post here I'd wager that man might have the answer to that and other REED questions. i think he is posting pretty regulary on the garage sale thread, but i think he might have put his vise collecting on hold for now. let me (us) know what you find out if Jason or you find out what it means and if you want to start a REED vise history thread in Vintage tools i'll support it with plenty of pictures and posts. also FMC might have some knowledge in his head or on his thread about vises.

VA: no worries and i probably recall Torqueman's vises a bit better than most of the guys cause he tended to ask me about them, but he's back to Craftsman block grinders which is really his thing in case you might need a grinder i'd recommend a round top and industrial grade if you can find one.

cheers

Tink Tink very cool. Seemingly only use would be tapered pipe? Doesn't seem one would often run into something like that?

Jaws are pinned. You don't use the swivel jaw on pipe. The main body of the vise would interchange with Number 82 through 86. The 86 being the most universal. It has both pipe jaws and vise jaws . Either the static or the dynamic could swivel. You wouldn't use both jaws in swivel mode at the same time.

Reed wood vise I restored and sold. 10" wide jaws. Paid $10 for it, then it rode around in my truck for almost a year before I re did it.
