Tool sizes on a recent Ford/Lincoln

My wife just got a 2014 Lincoln Navigator with the 5.4L V8. It's the first modern Ford product - or off that matter American car - I've had to maintain. What size fasteners/tools am I going to find in it? Any uncommon sizes? I'm talking for regular maintenance and light wrenching.

You'll probably need at least a 20lb drilling hammer. If that doesn't work then good luck.
On a serious note there is probably no oddball sizes. Metric will be there since pretty much all car company's use it now.

You probably won't run into any weird sizes for normal maintenance stuff.


Dunno if it's got those funky vacuum hubs in the front, there is a tool for those.


There's a toolkit made for removing broken off spark plugs, this is common on the 5.4 3 valve motor. Yours may be recent enough that the problem has been rectified but I don't know for sure.

8mm, 7mm, 10mm, 13mm and 15mm will damn near take apart the whole truck, 16mm for the drain plug, a 2014 wont have the 2 piece spark plugs so you wont need that kit.

oh and a 12 point 12mm swivel impact socket for the drive shaft if you ever have to remove it.

well since it is a 2 wheel drive it probably has the 2 piece drive shaft and they can develop an issue were you have to take the back half of it off and fill it with grease because it feels like you got rear ended when you stop. It is a service bulletin for the f150s but we have seen it in the expedition/navigators as well, just not as common as the trucks.

oh and the lug nuts will be 21mm

Yep, plus a lug socket, axle nut socket and the occasional goofy small, half sized common on their dash and interior assemblies.

Your right a 5.5mm for some interior and wheel wells. And t20, 25, 27 and 30 are not uncommon here and there.

Got those sizes so good there - need to double check on the T27 though. Any E-Torx? Don't have any of those.

Ah yes, how could I forget to mention the torx. (Grumbles at the thought of inside door panel work). A selection of hex bit sockets as well.

You don't need any tools to work on it. :lol: Entrust your new ride to the factory trained techs at your local Ford/Lincoln dealer who know your vehicle's needs best. Besides, they'll probably fix it using a lap top with IDS on it to reflash various systems. :lol: :beer:

I sense you were looking for a valid excuse to buy more tools. You absolutely must have a Hein Werner jack and stands for basic oil change lifting. No other brand will work. It requires a Quincy QT-5 air compressor to fill the tires and only WrightGrip wrenches properly fit the Lincoln fastners (everyone knows this). Some Mayhew prybars will assist with tire rotation and you should have a Snap-On BJP1 ball joint press to maintain your front suspension. Any questions?

I'm trying to fill in my 3/8" drive sockets (15mm for instance). Also trying to get some ratcheting wrenches along the way as well. Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm trying to decide how much (if any) of my own wrenching to do - oil changes, etc.

Inherited a 2014 Taurus SEL recently as well. It's got the 3.5 cyclone V6. Anything different is need for it. Haven't done much wrenching on the Lincoln but this car will be my son's in a bit when he can drive so I want to teach him how to do the basics on it.

After reading about the water pump issue I thought of trading it off but I’ve been told that is pretty rare.

Only Stahlwille 1/4" tamper-proof T20 socket will unlock the MAF sensor for periodic cleaning. Get the Fumoto valve to get rid of that nefarious 16mm drain plug!

Front brake pad bracket, it's one casting. Two holes are metric, two holes are SAE...on the same casting!!!

I mean, someone had to go out of their way to do that.
Oh I hate that about my Super Duty. Have to have SAE and Metric on you at all times. And some of the stangest sizes. 5.5mm SEMS really?

You know, there's always been a problem, around here at least, with even import cars having SAE fasteners on lug nuts, battery terminals, hose clamps and other things that are commonly replaced with generic parts, so I've always had to have both SAE and Metric.

But I don't even have a 5.5mm, for example, because I have a 7/32" and don't need it. I understand that many if not most or even all tool companies don't have separate dies for 3/4" and 19mm, or 1-1/16" and 27mm, because they are so close (1-1/16" = 26.99mm).

A lot of Ford's use a 6.3mm on which a 1/4 socket will work fine. These are 1/4 drive.
SK is the only company that makes a 6.3mm socket, that I'm aware of at this time.

Well when you add in the rust and crust over the years that changes the size a bit so sometimes you can get away with a different size socket but I did not own a 5.5 mm until I brought the 250 Super Duty

18mm probably. The one socket that is skipped on most sets. Which I discovered when doing the brakes on my new to me then newer ford. Luckily I had a stubby 18mm wrench to press into service with a cheater.

The problem with the water pump on that engine is, if it is ignored, coolant goes into the crankcase and if enough get is, you need a rebuilt engine.


Very simple solution. If your engine is running hot or low on coolant and there is NO OBVIOUS EXTERNAL LEAK or IF THERE APPEARS TO BE A MYSTERIOUS OIL LEAK FROM THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE you likely have a bad water pump and need to get it serviced IMMEDIATELY !!

DO NOT BLINDLY KEEP TOPPING OF THE COOLANT ! You are killing the engine.

One video I watched did not show any pressure leak on a cold engine until 25 PSI.
