I'm still waiting for you guys to figure this one out for me... LEWIS?

Take Care!
Mike

I'll keep looking zoom but the Lewis vises with the swivel jaws im finding have the double slide bar on them and the static swivels and not the dynamic. Cool looking vise and it does look alot like a Prentiss but im not finding any archives on it yet.

The gap is from the tops of the jaws being rounded off from being used as a tool since 1972. The new owner didn't like it rounded so he flipped them over. I said when he is ready for new jaws to contact this guy http://www.wiltonviseparts.net/ heard he is pretty good at this stuff :bounce:

Well at least they didn't wear down into the jaw towers. The one vise I've had with jaws that badly rounded they didn't stop and rounded off the ends of the jaw towers as well....badly

I was able to square them up a bit and put a set of Dr. Kevin's jaws on it, so it wound up looking reasonable, but it still made me wonder why anybody would keep filing/grinding away when they can see they're taking metal off the vise.

That seems to be more common, than uncommon..

think about it, if someone took care of them, they wouldn't get rid of them...lol

we all end up with the red headed step childs, or ones that were handed down, abused by each as they went, because "they" didn't buy it or take care of it.

Here is a nice vise that I just finished cleaning up it is 4" Penn 514, which I believe is made by Hollands? The Jaws are cast into place and all the machining is very tight and smooth. 878f6626ff68a41a59a5348fe358155b.jpg9a699df2cc73257739c9ca8e13e0d228.jpg9dad2920bbbad9a366c583cb84c8825e.jpg

BRETT: cool find and I think PENN is one of Prentiss vise companies economy lines from what i recall. not many found or listed and to say these vises are ECONOMY is a joke cause every bit as solid and maybe even better made than some of my Prentiss vises are.

i have the 5 inch version and i picked it up in your area maybe 5 or more years ago from i think the original 90 year old owner or it was his dad's.

nice job on your restorations and if you lived closer i'd have you spiff up a few of mine for me cause i'm working on my house and even if i did the restorations they wouldn't be as nice as the ones you are turning out lately. WELL DONE!!

Drives: thank you sir that means Alot coming from you. I take my daily work of building yachts and try to apply the same detail into my vises. Thanks to a recent post on FB from RILEYSAN I just built a electrolysis tank which should make life a little easier, and does a awesome job of removing rust and grime. I put a rusty old Estwing hammer in last night for 12 hrs as a test and was pleased with the results. Now to start cleaning up some of these other old vises laying around. Here is the setup and a after pic of the hammer2e448b12a57b6c4843e6f731c091b691.jpg1e1cd011cdaeeaa2168e78999a1f0af0.jpg

I have an old Indestro bench vise I found at the flea a while back. I have tried to find some info on it but come up empty every time I search. I look at AA and there's tons of Indesrto stuff but I have never found any info on their vises. Google images shows a few of the clamp on versions, but mine is a bolt down 3" jaw swivel bench vise.... Anyone have any idea on where to research when or who made them for Indestro ?

Got around to painting the Reed 403.5 I found in Texas CL a few weeks back. Also found a Athol Starrett 924 today on CL. Always wanted one and the price was fair, it will be my everyday user. Kevin is cooking up some jaws for me.

Before and after C-1. I swapped the handle for a nicer one that was in a bad spindle, replaced the locks and practiced my blacksmithing techniques on the dust cap to get it round again!

question on wood vises... i want to get an old one to restore for one of my work benches.. what are the value of the older wood vises? i'm seeing a lot of wilton, craftsman, etc.. in my area. what should i be paying for one? i know that's a loaded question... but what would a decent deal be i should ask?

Found a nice Record nr.5 at my employers in an old training room. Have to ask if they are willing to give away.

Definitely look for a quick release model---you typically reverse the handle a 1/2 turn and it releases from the nut. Many times you will see a groove cut into the spindle where the nut disengages. The older (late 1800's/early 1900's) USA models with 10" wide jaws are my favorites: Morgan, Columbian, Richards-Wilcox, and many "hardware store" brands are found. Columbian, Craftsman, and Wilton made zillions of wood vises for school shops in the 50's/60's and those are pretty nice as well but don't open as much as the vintage models. Of those, I actually like the Craftsman vises best, as they are heavier and better machined.

There are many that like the English vises (vices). I've owned a few, and while they are definitely well made I can't get past the steel handles on them. Woodworking just seems better with a fat wooden handle on the vise.

Price-wise, you should be able to get a restorable model for less than $50. Totally cleaned/restored with no missing parts, minimal pitting, etc, the price could be as much as $200 (such as a big Richards-Wilcox with quick release and retractable bench dog).

If you can find an original Emmert wood vise at a reasonable price, they are incredibly well built.

Hey y’all. I’m a newby to GJ. I’ve tried posting but the site tells me I haven’t... so trying again here.
I picked up this post vise in Maggie Valley, NC last weekend and was wondering what anyone thought of it. It mostly looks hand made to me. The only markings I can find are in the wedge type part on the back end of the screw. I’m curious what that was used for also.
Here’s a link to my google photos. I hope this works. If not I will figure that out too.

I have other vices I will post later. Thanks for having me.

Hi All
Does anyone know anything about this vise? There are no markings except for what might be the model number 390 B2 on the vise. The description just says "black smith vice" (Fretters will like this spelling better :))

The vise mechanism look very different too. It looks like the dynamic jaw has to be moved back and forth by hand and at set intervals the pin on the side is used to lock the vise in place. And then arm and screw are used to do more fine tuning of the dynamic jaw position.

thx

Hi all,
I'm new to the forum and am hoping for some help identifying a vise that I recently purchased. It has no markings anywhere and has seen some misuse, abuse, and was not assembled properly, but seems to be of good quality.
I removed a jaw and measured it.
Height: 1.363"
Thickness: 0.627"
Step: 0.758"
Center to center on screw holes: 2.026"
Thanks for any information.

ByJustSomeGuy, that second threaded nut looks to be the dove-tail nut that came out of a bench vise and just happened to be the same thread pattern as the original box nut.---Looks like the original is either completely striped or it is just a donor and is merely a spacer now.:headscrat

Building a garage. I figured a garage should have a vise or two in it. Here are a few I picked up. The plan is to repaint them all and give them whatever else love they need. It will also give me something to do in the garage during the winter.

Record No 6. Bought it because it is a good sized vise and I thought it was a good deal
20171003_155305.jpg

RAE No 4 Canadian. Bought it as a set of 3 because I thought the vise was a good mid size and was interesting. I think it will look good in bright red.
20171003_155413.jpg

Second vise I bought as part of a set of 3. It's small, says 'Athol' on it. I'll probably just end up getting rid of it.
20171003_155532.jpg

20171003_155438.jpg

Third of set of 3. Very small. Missing bottom screw/clamp to hold it to bench. I have no use for it.
20171003_155546.jpg

Bought this when I went to go pick up the Record No. 6. I saw it and was curious. Seller says it has a quick release. Thought it was interesting. It's a decent size. Needs a good paint stripping and repaint. I will probably end up keeping it.

The Record 3x series are very good vices, made of the expensive malleable cast iron and designed for heavy work. I only have a really abused 34 as they are rare around here and usually sell for quite a lot locally.

I love the record 3x series too! wish i had one with the quick release, but i make do, Im not sure thats a RAE vise either.. ive had a few dozen, and all the no.4's ive had were marked No 4 or No. 40 on the sliding jaw. I have a very similar vise to yours. but its marked 'Canadian No. 40' with a swivel base.. its very stout and heavy duty compared to the 4 inch RAE swivel vises Ive had.
Heres my Record 35P , and a few pics of the Canadian No 40

BMR: welcome to the forum. that isn't a vise we see often or maybe at all so i'll take a WAG (wild *** guess) and say it's a Prentiss.

maybe someone else owns one and can match it up. my reasoning is the jaws are similar to Prentiss but other makers had that style. the hub on the screw has some Prentiss look and not having a name on the side is fairly common for some old Prentiss vises cause they would not put their names on so the companies selling them could have their names on the box or maybe a sticker sort of like Wilton does for their Snap on, John Deere and other companies.

got any other vises or feel free to take a few more pictures and post them with the width of the jaw, weight and maybe any pictures of #'s or markings and some of these guys are great at figuring this stuff out.

cheers

BMR: after thinking a bit more about it i'm thinking it could be a FULTON. still sort of a WAG, but I own a few and even though his name is on the side he was great at marketing so maybe he was the first to not put his company's name on the side of his vises.

here's a Fulton that isn't the same as yours, but maybe you can see some of the same features? i have a few other ones, but no pictures handy so maybe you or VA can do a search and pull some up cause i gotta get back to painting.

cheers

Good to know. I will make sure to keep it.

I'd be interested in your Athol if you'd be able to post to Carlisle, Cumbria?

I will look into it. I have a feeling shipping will make it cost prohibitive.

Heres my Record 35P , and a few pics of the Canadian No 4

I had posted another thread asking for a vise ID and it came back that it was probably a RAE even though it didn't have the right markings.

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=370906

In the end it doesn't matter too much. I will keep it and paint it. Hopefully I put it to some good use.

I believe he has several bench vise parts involved, yes dove tail, handle and screw, the garter with set screw, how creative Sandman

Halifax: England or Canada, (I assume the latter)? Might be worth putting country in your profile info. :)

It can be confusing for us Brits on occasion, with a good few of our town/city names having been reused on other continents. :D
