Found this guy today. Got it for $10 just because I liked it. Any ideas about what it is?

Can’t find any markings anywhere. Feels very well made, heavy and sturdy. The back has a lip that almost makes it look like it was meant for hanging.

I'm embarrassed to show today's find after seeing your big fancy Herbrand box. It's a little Craftsman hiproof box that I coughed up $5.00 for.

Box went to the strippers, and a semblance of a logo/ badge emerged. Come on, Sherlock - don’t let me down!!!

Hi all, thanks for your answers. So it was probably made by Beach for Craftsman, right? What emblem should I look for because it is missing it? Thanks again guys.

I just picked up one of those a couple weeks ago. Its in nice shape with a nice logo and inside tray. I paid $8.00 so you did better then me.

They hold a lot of tools for their size and shape. Great little boxes for putting behind a truck seat or even the cars trunk.

I came across this old craftsman roll away at a bard sale for $20 and couldn't pass it by. Has the keys but missing a drawer (****!). Can anyone give me an idea of the vintage or any other info? Thank you.

The slides, handle and trim pieces sure look like Beach. Is there grey paint under all that red? Looks like maybe someone painted it.

The logo is usually called "Crown Logo"

There are vintage Craftsman catalogs here: http://www.blackburntools.com/articles/rose-tools-catalog-archives/sears/index.html

I deciphered the sticker - John Deere. Armed with that knowledge I found my guy - https://www.etsy.com/listing/197678152/vintage-john-deere-tractor-toolbox-tool

http://www.ebay.com/itm/JOHN-DEERE-TOOL-BOX-WITH-MOUNTING-BRACKET-/321972384968

Anyone know anything about these? Did JD make them or someone else?

Hi, yes, sorry I didn't reply to your earlier post.. This is a tool box originally supplied for a North American John Deere machine, tractor, combine or anything.
The hook and slot on the back of it engages with a standard John Deere bracket and locking pin fitted to their machines.
I believe the boxes like yours including the internal lift out tray were supplied with tractors built in Waterloo, Iowa. The tractors I have here in England were built in Mannheim, Germany and the boxes are externally identical but don't include the lift out tray, but larger JD tractors sold here (which are built in Iowa and shipped to here) have boxes like yours.
Although all the boxes are superficially the same I have also seen 3 different patterns of plastic and metal handles. My son bought a new one recently and it's made in china.. Not sure if JD actually make them or buy then in.
Maybe yours got painted red if it was on a farm that had MF or IH machines and the farmer painted it to match them.
Red is a good colour for finding a tool box when it's been repairing the baler and left in the middle of a 50 acre field, unless my sisters colour blind ex boyfriend comes along on a tractor and runs over it because everything looks grey to him!!

Thanks for your reply VR6ix. There doesn't seem to be any grey paint under the red paint. And you are right, somebody did paint it. Me, when I was about 14! I hope to do a better job this time!! Thanks again.

<SNIP>

Thank you, Farmer!!! What a wealth of knowledge! I got the box because it felt like it was old-school quality. Very heavy. I do have the tray, and the handle is plastic, but I would be very surprised if it’s not US-made.

I stripped the red, but decided to leave it as-is for the time being. I kind of dig the “patina” look.

PS: Edited because I didn't realize how small the photos that are uploaded directly from an iPhone are!!!

It looks good like that with the paint removed. It's unlikely to go rusty, they are originally finished in a black coating but underneath it the steel must be galvanised or electroplated with something. The black finish wore off one of mine 20 years ago from driving the tractor through fields of wheat and still no rust.
These are a lovely well made general purpose box. Long enough for an 18" breaker bar in the bottom and even when full of tools they're light enough to pick up, and the rounded corners don't hurt you. The lip on the lid keeps water and dust out. I think yours is a proper US made original!
If you get the mounting bracket available separately from JD you can fix the box hanging anywhere like the bed of a truck and still lock it up with it fixed in place.
Enjoy using it, add to that 'patina', and may it be your companion for many years to come!

$20? $15 for Smokeshow?

I hate you and Smokeshow, both!

The only way you will find another drawer is to find a donor box to steal parts from.

I have one of these that is missing the cabinet door/front cover. I still don't know for certain who made these.

Your box appears in the 1949 catalog but disappears by 1954. I have gaps in my digital catalogs between those years so can't tell you exactly when Craftsman changed to the next generation of rolling cabinets. I suspect that these were probably offered in 1948 as well, but again have no catalog for that year.

Great find!

Brian

Had to drive 2-1/2 hours to get it. Been hounding a buddy to sell it for years. He redid it back in the early 90's. Needs a slide or two and new locks. I'm going to redo it this winter as a mobile bench for my shop. Likely will end up extreme green to match my other snap on box.

Hi all. Just one last question. (For now anyways). Is there supposed to be a manufacturer's date or model number anywhere on my box? Thanks

Hello Guys, thanks for responding. Brian, thanks for the info. If anyone has a drawer, please let me know. I don't like having missing parts, like move this one on then. Thanks again.

whats the going rate on a box like this

Depends on your geographical location on pricing but due to them both being 3 drawers, I see it being not over $100 but I am sure rileysan will be along soon as he is very knowledgeable about said red and grey tool boxes

It largely depends on your location. That 3 drawer roller is the most common box from the 60s and 70s so is still widely available. It appears to be in excellent condition so I would value it at around $75. The top chest is also fairly common but isn't in as nice of condition as the roller. I would value it at $25.

Prices may vary of course, but I see these boxes fairly often. Boxes that are over-priced will remain unsold for months. As an example, there's a 3 drawer top chest like that on my local CL that's been listed at $50 for nearly two months and it remains unsold.

A quick trip to Junkstock in Omaha netted me this Blackhawk beauty that came from a Oliver Tractor mechanic. Casters were replaced by the person who won it at an auction in Iowa.
