Man,I've searched hi-N-low.....can any of ya'll give me just a real quick tutorial on makin a wye in/on 26 g round duct.Just got a big load of 4&6 inch for some dust collection inprovments here.Commercial wyes are stupid expensive............ Tools:I've got almost unlimited hand tools, portaband and big honkin horz metal BS.Tig,Mig,OA and soldering equip. Don't have brake or those rolling machines.

Which part gets the flange?I'm thinking the main trunk gets flanged and the branch comin in slips over.Is soldering the way to go or will pop rivets and duct seal be enough? Thanks BW

Presuming you already have the round pipe, the easiest way to do this is start with a round hole in your trunk line. Then trim it out to the angle you want. Just trim a little then test fit, till you get it to fit how you want. After that you can trace the shape on the branch by slipping it in the trunk. When you have your trim line add your flange on to the branch. then cut to fit. Remember, once you get the hole in the trunk line to fit how you want, make a cardboard pattern. That way you can duplicate it easier.

The flange will go on the branch, for dust collection it will go to the inside, pop rivets and duct seal will be fine.

BW the sad and honest truth is unless you want to drive yourself nuts go buy a wye :D. I will add if you really want to build one you can do it by using the 2 pieces of pipe you have by simply cutting an oval hole the right size in the side of the 6" and flanging the 4" into it . Cut tabs into the end of the 4" and fold half of them back then slip it into the oval opening in the 6" and fold out the tabs you didnt fold back before so that you have tabs on the inside and outside of the 6" then screw the outside tabs down on the transition and silicone the snot out of the transition . You can get a tool at Harbor Freight to shrink the ends of the pipe so it will slip into the next section ( where you cut it ) . The tool is a flanging tool and will flange the end much like the factory flanged end that looks like a pleated dress :D.

Thankyou vey much! The bill for a few of these wye's is easily over the 200$ mark......monies which can be better spent on tooling(like more sheet metal stuff).I will keep track of the time per wye.Am thinking a 1/2 hr or so,with alittle practice.BW

Very nice........20 min.Cpl key points:Took 2 trys on a proper template.Made 3 practice holes by the 4th the template/hole specs are spot on.......make hole in trunk close enough to end of duct to reach far end of branch with my 18R(those long reach)visegrip welding clamp, makes riveting a boom-boom breeze. Also used regular length visegrip wld/clamp to hold trunk down to edge of bench whilst performing hole surgery....reducing "duct wrestling" to parctically nill.Length or width of flange on branch is critical, uhh too wide and it won't fit in hole,1/2 to 3/4" max.6 evenly spaced rivets and its done. The 18R's really worked like majic.

Thanks again,BW
