PVC doesn't stay good looking if you run a string trimmer along it. Plan to have something other than grass up to your PVC.
Interesting. I thought with all the PVC fencing out there that wouldn't be an issue. I have to build a pressure treated perimeter to hold the gravel in anyway, but I'm sure it won't take long before weeds are growing in the gravel.

I could just make some custom steel, aluminum or stainless powder coated panels and give up on the PVC idea.

Wait a minute. I'm painting it. Painted PVC has got to be more string trimmer resilient than painted wood. I'm assuming PVC sheet is jut as hard as PVC piping. I suppose I could go the extra mile and attach a pressure treated border at ground level.

Actually it's nowhere near as hard...and as 6768rogues says, aggressive string trimmer usage can actually chew up the trim...painted or not. If used in the way way you intend, you should plan on having some type of barrier. Never been a fan of having grass butting right up against any building material besides concrete. Doesn't take much to create a weed/grass barrier.

I'll throw in 2 more cents in regard to your project. PVC trim materials have there place, and can be a pretty much maintenance free material. Tradeoffs include preparation, careful installation, and extra price/costs. I've gotten lots on compliments on some of our work that has involved extensive use of PVC materials. But I won't pretend it didn't come at a much higher cost than other materials might have been. The use of it should be balanced with it's intended application and the cost involved. In certain instances there are likely other materials that can achieve acceptable results with less prep and at lower cost.

I'm seeing plywood in my future. Thanks for all the info and the remarkably polite methods of stating that PVC is a waste of time and money for my application.

If you want inexpensive and easily replaceable think about steel roof panels (barn siding). One $30 panel could probably cover half of what you need, cut to height and installed running vertically. (Someone earlier may have mentioned it in this thread). It might be the perfect material to keep the assessor from taking a closer look

quattro_sinko - Good Idea. If those wood peckers don't leave the shed alone I may have to consider that for the whole building.

Pvc expands and contracts way too much if you have any real lengths of the stuff fastened at both ends. My recommendation would be treated 1x or plywood and cover with something called ground breaker. It's a textured fiberglass sheet that comes in 1ft and 2ft high 50 or 100ft long. I used it on my last house to protect the pink board I put against my house foundation. Held up great to 10+ years of string trimming. Fades a little but other than that no complaints. That's what I'd use. They have a good selection of accessories for it at menards but you said those aren't near you. Maybe home depot?
