Torx plus - where does it show up?

I see (at least some) tool manufacturers are pumping out Torx Plus bits. The stuff I work on is usually few years old, but I fear eventually I will come across something using these. Not come across them yet.

Who is using them, on what?

The last one I saw was on a Honda Odyssey throttle body. They aren't common. But show up on transmission housings and flywheels at the most inconvenient times.

Found them on a Frontier dual-mass flywheel right around the most inconvenient time.

Can confirm, same size Torx doesn't work worth a ****.

This is what I fear. I understand one can use regular torx bits for them. However my shop has enough struggle with larger torx sizes found on undercarriage bolts on Euro Trucks. T60 doesn't last long for example. I am waiting for the Germans to send some nasty **** our way with torx plus. :lol_hitti

I can confirm that Torx does not work too... My SO dealer didn't have them on the truck at the time.

Subaru 2.5l cylinder head camshaft bearing cap. I also suspect Torx Plus on a spring loaded belt tensioner for E36 BMW, although I haven't been able to confirm. A pain in the ***, but they do engage really well.

Looks like your bits will last longer with Torx Plus? I love Torx. I hate seeing Phillips or slotted fasteners nowadays. I haven't bought Phillips fasteners in years.

Ford seat bolts. GM seat bolts have external torx plus. I had to chase down a tool truck for both of these. The VIM 77 piece master set covers you nicely for about $165. My set sits idle most of the time but sure is a welcome site when I need it.

Torx plus is definitely a step up from standard and the bits do last a bit longer, the problem is on one car you now have hex bolts, torx, torx plus, female torx, security torx, triple square and spline all over the place meaning for 1 job you need a load of different sizes and types of sockets. Its also difficult to put any real torque on torx or spline fittings unless the bit is dead on straight, otherwise it'll just strip. Swivel joints don't seem to work too well with them.

I think I've seen a torx-plus on a BMW battery cover.
At that time, I didn't know what that was, just some weird looking bolt that looks like a torx.
I just used a normal torx driver to remove and install.

Torx plus is the system used in dental implants. Its all European based gear and I didn't know what it was until I saw this thread. Thanks!

The story I heard was that the company that owned the Torx patent new it was going to expire and there would be a zillion companies making tools without paying royalties.

Hence, Torx Plus. Anyone have any torque spec on Torx vs Torx Plus for similar size ? How about tool bit wear ?

You want weird, look up some the fasteners that Apple uses. I swear they come up with a new one every couple of years. I also heard the new iPhone 8 is mostly glued together.

I don't have a document with this data, but at a previous job we replaced a torx-head trilobular thread forming screw, with the exact same screw but with a torx plus head.

This was a high speed electronics manufacturing application. The original torx screw was creating problems, because the heads would partially strip when they were tightened- which would create debris, which would land on the PCBs, get sealed inside, and cause parts to fail by shorting them out.

When we went to torx plus, this problem completely disappeared. It truly is a better design. The changes are subtle, but make a difference.
