Taumac,

Thanks for taking the time to post that info. It must have taken a while. I still don't think we will get to the bottom of dating unless we include all the different features etc. on the CM's. Someone has to know how to start a spread sheet with the different features.

I totally agree. That was just the badge location and there was inconsistencies which didn’t make sense. I felt like I was telling people wrong information so for myself I needed know. Even though I didn’t find a definitive “date” i thought I would share my findings.

At least we are closer to finding a beginning and ending date.

I second the thought of a spread sheet and hats off to you taumac for the time spent on all of the information. When I get back from my deployment in a couple weeks I can work on a spread sheet and try to attach photo documentation to the dates.

The trick will be getting all the pictures from here. If someone was willing to get them on a disc or thumb drive and send them to me that would be of help. I'd also include my boxes in my shop and would try to line up the catalog to the dates. Be a challenge but worth it.

One thing I noticed between my right and left logo boxes was that the 6 drawer top box with the logo on the left had no horizontal lines going across the top lid, unlike my right logo 10 drawer top box.

Have you guys ever seen a box like this? Notice where the handle is on the deep middle drawer. Every 10 drawer box I've seen has the handle on the top.

After nearly 3 years of looking, I finally found a 12 drawer top chest. I pick it up Saturday, along with a 3 drawer roller. $50 for the pair. But as you can see, the top chest had a little accident. The seller tells me it fell off his truck. Oh well ... you take what you can find!

OUCH!!! Still a good buy at $50. I’m sure you’ll be able to work some magic on it.

We had to put off meeting to finish the deal on the 12 drawer top chest until Tuesday, but in the meantime, I came across two more rollers this weekend. The first, a 3 drawer roller, almost came home with me. That's the third one I've passed on for a mere $50. The second one didn't stand a chance. I found this 9 drawer roller full of tools for only $100. I might have to start bringing these into my house ...

Just missed out on a three piece stack that included a two drawer middle for $50. Seller sent me a message saying the first person didn't pick it up, but evidently they didn't want to give me any time to respond. By the time I got home from work and read the message it was picked up by someone else. Hopefully someone on here got it?

You'll find one when you are least looking for it. When I was in San Diego on vacation, I found a 3 drawer middle and 6 drawer top box filled with vintage craftsman tools for $75. What surprised me is it had been posted for over a week with no bites. I emailed the guy and he still had it. Weighed a ton but oh so very much worth it.

Not exactly a family photo, but I'm trying to organize my life and at least got most of the stuff in the same garage now. Please ignore the random non Red/Gray box.

I need this box like a hole in the head, but it’s the first time I’ve seen one with the combination lock in person.

I actually came across it several months ago, but never heard back from the guy. I decided a couple days ago to send him another email and he got back to me and said he still had it.

Haven’t been able to find a date in the usual place yet.963fbf82029732df7ca83c1b8095071b.jpg0139d7a8beea53abd0dfbb2c4ab15df9.jpg311b97876b64e54ef15443fcd154afa9.jpg

What can anyone tell me about this one? Where can I get a replacement lock for the bottom storage? I pulled this one out of our scrap pile at work....way too nice to let it get scrapped! I put the nice casters on it.

Yeah, I pretty much hate photobucket anymore. I didn't have the "attach" paperclip when I first posted, but I can add the photos to your reply...so here they are. The Craftsman logo was used in the 60's and 70's, so I know that much about it.

Nice cabinet. Never seen a Crowntop in R/G. I’ve only seen in all gray. Its appears to be from about say somewhere early to mid 60’s just by the cabinet.

Thanks. I found this old toolbox to put on top. Had this one in the garage from some estate sale or another.

So I just posted a really late response to taumac's awesome thread on the history of his Wall of Craftsman (which was a truly inspiring thread BTW; thanks that taumac). See it here:https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=6830999#post6830999

To continue, I last mentioned I was starting to refinish my chests one by one. I originally wanted to keep their existing patina and character but after getting all ****-retentive on the engine and front end restoration to the 1985 BMW M535i, the mis-matched paint and finishes of all the boxes finally got to me.
d3Cbx1IvbeQWzSP

u9DZREEpqAh4Vcm

The first one was the #65035 (8/1972) 5 Drawer/Lower Compartment (I call it Box #3 on the left). It was really a mess when I bought it and only managed to get it clean enough to work with since I was buying tools for the car restoration and needed the chest badly. This is what it looked like when I brought it to the hangar (this is after I cleaned it up somewhat):
DGmUzpQ2Bn9A9iW

(I don't have a good photo of it finished; I'll post it when I get back up there a take a better one)

Note that this wasn't supposed to a full and complete **** top to bottom restoration; this was just supposed to be a quick clean-up and light repaint to bring it back to serviceable usefulness. Really just breathing new life into it and extending their lifespan as long as I need them.

Recently I finished the #65212 Middle Intermediate 3 Drawer (my Box #4).
0lklj5cTuSLsEl7

And finished:
tBePrPt9wibRLjS

I kept the previous original owner's stenciled name on the lid to honor the box's past:
2DmWRREydgHY6yi

With its' new sacrificial/protective wood top (3 coats of Helmsman Spar Urethane ought to do it):
vXPEoyryQyuA7Xn

Refilled, new liners and glides all lubed; put back into action:
wqjAfPhcsuw257A

As to the colors, lots of folks here and in other thread have posted what they used. I bought a lot (an awful lot) of greys and reds trying to find just the right tone and match. When I did Box #3, I used:
Case: Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch 2X Ultra Cover Gloss Dark Gray
Drawers: Rust-Oleum Gloss Protective Enamel #7762 "Sunrise Red"

The red was pretty close but still didn't have the right amount of orange in it. The gray was good for tone, but couldn't match the finish (the original is a slight metallic powder coated color so simple spray paint isn't going to do it).
When I did the Intermediate I had better existing finishes to try and match (inside at the back of the drawers and under the lid and at the back of the box). I switched up to these:
Case: Dupli-Color Perfect Match Automotive BNS0604 Precision Gray (W40), it's a Nissan Altima color
Drawers: Krylon Farm & Implement "Massey Ferguson Red" High Gloss Enamel

The red has the right amount of orange in the base and is an almost dead match to whatever Sears used.
The Gray is good for matching the tone but it has more metallic flake than I would have liked; it still looks pretty good when done though. You have to put a clear enamel coat over the Precision Gray per the instructions; after a few coats with buffing in between you're good to go.

I am in the middle of doing this to the other chests starting with the CM #65272 Middle Intermediate 2 Drawer. I will actually re-paint the Husky Intermediate (#92-603) in the matching color scheme so it all looks homogeneous; a bit sacrilegious maybe but it contrasts too much for my tastes.

Has anyone been successful finding a badge for the red and gray toolboxes? I imagine your only source would be to come across one on the second hand market? Is this the only way to get ahold of one?

Also, I've seen many good looking restorations, so I'm curious, how are these badges attached? Are they riveted or screwed on somehow with hardware?

The plastic versions of the badges have little clips. You slide the badge up, not pulling on it or prying it up, and they come out. The metal badge versions have little retaining clips on the back side that you pull off.

but I believe most restored badges have been hand painted.

I found a NOS emblem on ebay, and bought it right away. I paid too much because it was the first one I had seen available in quite a few months. About 29 bucks I believe. That's more than I've paid for some of my CM boxes! I still need a couple more.
