Been out of pocket for a few days, has anyone posted this yet? SK toolbox for $50 in the Willow Glen area of San Jose CA:

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/sby/tls/d/sk-top-tool-box/6337746678.html

I'd take a look but it's too far. The ad says it's not a Matco, but those handles say different, it could be rebadged. If it is and the drawers open and close well, sounds like a solid deal.

The seller sent a pic of another grinder he will sell for $40.00.
I'll post the pic he sent me, but I can not guarantee the authenticity.

AH I would have been so pissed if I went to buy a baldor and found that craftsman...

Here's something I'm not sure if it's worth $200 but I think it might be a "hot deal".

Hayward, CA

Garvin Mill with Bridgeport Head - $200

00G0G_90MxKuExPaV_600x450.jpg

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/tls/d/vintage-garvin-milling/6341237640.html

Looks like it would be a large large project not to mention I'm pretty sure it's 3 phase. Without the bridgeport head I'd probably pass at this price. With the bridgeport head I don't know. I'm sure some machinists on here would know more though.

You are totally correct, that would be a massive project for someone. That is a 100 year old horizontal mill with a Browne & Sharp #10 taper that someone adapted an old Bridgeport milling J head onto the backside of the horizontal shaft and that looks tired in itself with a modified plate to accept a different motor (with some brilliant wiring, if I may add). Even after all the work, time and money spent you would most likely be disappointed with the tolerances.

The lure of a $200 mill is very enticing and interesting but it's a honey trap. A working used Bridgeport will be cheaper.

While the dust collection aspect is neat, how much do you need to be grinding for it to be worthwhile? Is this designed to be used in some sort of industrial production setting?

How much dust collection one needs can be very subjective however the answer should be, get as much dust collection as one can get when using a grinder. The particles and their size from a grinder is typically some of the nastiest stuff created in a shop (think breathing in burned metal & stone dust into lungs), if you have something that can contain it and prevent dust clouds in your shop then the better off you are by leaps and bounds.

As catalytic stated about the base, that's a very nice and spacing solution for dust collection. How much more space is that grinder taking up compared to one with a regular pedestal?

I know this is not the thread to answer such questions but that grinder with a vfd (static or variable) and if it has good bearings then it can be very useful for someone who grinds regularly, it's a good solid grinder. Your lungs and employees will thank you.

It looks like a nice vintage and complete Delta or Stanley with 2 lighted eye shields and the tool rest are excellent ones, also has the hard to find cast iron water cooling pot. The bad paint job makes that grinder look worse than it is.

I know that I need some form of discussion on this thread. That way at least I know if the deal is actually a hot deal or not. I do like to post up new finds when I'm answering someone though. Like this:

Petaluma, CA

Jet Horizontal Bandsaw - $200

Not sure what the model is but I don't think Jet makes a bandsaw under $1000 new so I think it's a pretty good deal.

00n0n_7yhKSscurY7_600x450.jpg

https://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/tls/d/metal-cutting-band-saw/6343414344.html

Found another decent deal.

Concord, CA

Atlas 618 Lathe - $350

I think this is a normal deal outside of the Bay Area but the lowest price I've seen for a decent small metal lathe. I mean I might pick it up if it's still there this weekend. Figure I'll give the closer people a shot.

Thanks Macgee, I appreciate the detailed response. My parents owned an equipment rental company for 25 years. We had a regular Baldor and, after sporadic use over several years, there was quite a bit of buildup behind it. We also had a horizontal wheel grinder used to sharpen up to four jackhammer bits - that one made a much bigger mess.

Apologies, I have no deals to add today, michael. ;)

The top looks to be maple chopping block. If it is, then thats a great deal. 6' x 30" maple tops for that price alone, not to mention the base, grinder and vise.

Very interesting way of mounting the grinder and creative way of replacing the swivel lock nut on the vise. Both are good items. I would be happy with any of those.

Been scouring my local CL but nothing has been coming up for a while. Like the rest of US GJ members, I'll be reading vicariously of the SF deals.

I would normally be onto that deal, but I'm down in macgee's neighborhood in southern CA right now. As many people already know, the area where that bench is located in Napa (northern) CA is in the middle of the deadliest and widest spread wildfire in California history.
So far 36 confirmed dead and almost 6000 structures burned.

Columbian Vise - $25 (Long Beach)

Not a 8", probably a 4" but still a good vise, looks complete and undamaged.

Ridgid 4512 Table Saw & Incra miter gauge $250- (Burbank, CA)

Normally I wouldn't post one of these hybrid table saws but looks clean and price is good with what looks to be included a $150 INCRA Miter1000/HD Miter Gauge. They both get good reviews. Grab that floor mat while your at it if you can get him to throw it into the deal, there good have at your workbench plus I wouldn't be surprised if he went down on price.

EDIT: Would probably help if I included the link:

FREE Large Craftsman Compressor.

Not sure how big it is or how much HP, but it looks to be pretty big from the picture:

It says you have to take down all the connectors yourself. Not sure what that means. I would assume you'd just disconnect it at the compressor...

Snap On Vintage tool chests - $200 (Mesa)
https://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/tls/d/snap-on-vintage-tool-chests/6349035891.html

This is a beautiful vintage box. It has been handed down from my grandpa, to my dad and now to me. I have no kids, so it can be yours. Everything works, doors close and lock to keep pesky fingers out. I bought a huge new box, so I'm letting her go.

Prentiss Bulldog 56 - $100

This started at $200 and he already dropped the price to $100. I don't believe the brand new in his description considering it's been repainted and Prentiss has been out of business forever no?

Agreed. The vise looks like it's been used and that paint is a give away. Who knows, but it seems like a good deal at that price if it's not hiding some damage.

I sent the seller a text last night and have not received a reply. Maybe it's just a dud CL ad.

I would call that deal Luke warm. Plenty of these (vintage non-swivel) come up in the SF area over time in the $40-$50. Granted if it's an 8" wide jaw then it's a good deal at $100 and if nothing is wrong with it (check the spindle nut, jaws lining up & for backlash!). If it's just a 3-1/2" to 4-1/2" wide jaw then I say a Luke warm deal unless you need a vise this week. They are really good vises when they're in good working order but they're just not as popular as slightly newer ones with swivel bases like a Reed 204R. These tend sit on CL for a while.

WOOD, METAL MACHINERY & GENERATOR- All for $350 (Rosemead, CA)

Not sure how good of deal this is due to the condition, how long it's been posted for and as most of us don't need buffers this large, one is like this one (https://offerup.com/item/detail/311626302/). The large belt grinder looks interesting, looks to be 2" x 72" with a built in vacuum system. I can also just see another buffer on the ground hiding behind the tree.
The generator? I wouldn't have much hope for it (check carburetor) but if it's good the 4.0 BFA's (4,000 watts/1800 rpm/1 gal per hr) get really good reviews for an older '80's RV generator.

Definitely a weird smorgasbord but could be good for someone all for $350

Keep in mind I know relatively nothing about lathes. Used one in middle school to turn pens and that's it. But they seem to be popping up on the Bay Area Craigslist for decent prices finally. I have no clue if they're actually worth what they're asking...

Nice post Michael,

The first lathe looks tired as well the second one but I see many cherries in the background of the second lathe. Would be worth while to make a visit as they are selling many items. It maybe an estate sale type situation.

*The last lathe looks very nice, a total steal for the price. It's a 14-1/2" South Bend Quick Change lathe and appears to be complete, in fairly good shape with no rust. If it's not worn out I would jump all over it and put a quick change tool post on it. $1500+ would be a good price for that lathe, especially if there's tooling with it. I would thoroughly check out the ways for wear, that could be why it's only $500. Bring your measuring kit when checking it out.

I would give my left nut for that Lista. If he takes $150, you're a happy man. I also see quite few more Lista's in the background, go make a bundle deal.

Jet jwl-1236 variable speed Wood Lathe (12"x36") with Buck Bro. Chisels- $200 (Palos Verde, CA)

These are still being sold today on HomeDepot's site for $995. Perfect for starting off and has the ability for turning large bowls on outboard side. It gets good reviews

Looks like it has some nice older Buck Bro. chisels, those 16 chisels alone would fetch $100 on eBay, maybe more. They're taking offers, for $150 that would a very nice set up.

I kinda think this must be either a scam, stolen, or a typo but the ad doesn't makes sense as any fof those cases. Could just be somebody desperate for money and selling their spouse's stuff with no idea what it's worth.

I'd be buying it but I need > 4.5 kva and 240v
