Gentlemen,

Looking for info on this saw regarding date of manufacture, how to maintain it, etc. Received it from my boss when his neighbor was getting rid of it. Seems to work ok with a good blade but I may put a new cord on it as the third prong is broken. Thanks in advance!

Eric,

Best I can say is "6712" could mean year 1967, week 12. Sure seems to be 50 years old, too!

Ben,

Thanks for the info! I found some old Sears catalogs online and I assumed it was pre-1970's due to plastic components showing up in '72. Still works pretty well for being 50 years old!

Gave it a quick once over with the air compressor yesterday and checked the brushes. Nice smooth wear with no grooves on the contact ends and they were at least 1/2" long still. Adjusting the blade depth and angle are kinda tight so it needs a bit of lube here and there. I'll get some more pics later today.

I got a similar saw--nearly new Porter cable w/aluminum housing in the steel box at an estate sale, looked like it had never been used and dated early 70's. turned it on and no-go. opened it up and the grease was hard as a rock.

I would tear it apart, see if there's any bearings or gears that hold grease and if so, clean old grease out and put fresh in there.

Took the saw apart to peek at the innards. Needs another dust off based on how crusty it is in spots!

More pics. The grease in the gearbox isn't hard but smells of melted crayons, oddly enough.

In your opinion, should it have more grease in it, and is wheel bearing grease sufficient?
