Here is a unique one Reed 2c with replaceable jaws and patent pending. Not mine but I wish it was but that old dog is still in service.

Nice job on that Columbian for your dad. That slide really shines.
I'm diggin' that darkened steel look. Mind sharing your techniques to achieve that glow? Is it clear coated?

After a lot of digging by various folks on here it appears that only the ones that have GUAR EXP on the slide as well as the date were released for sale 5 years prior to the date. Very early 1941-1944 vises were for the war effort and had no stamp plus they only had a one year warranty in the beginning. There's a long post about in the Vintage Tools section.

Blubolt--- I didnt think wilton started using the guar exp stamp until the 1950s. Thats why I was curious about the 1945 stamp. Ive never seen anything stamped earlier than 1945 before. I still don't quite understand the Wilton dating system.

Yeah the Wilton dating system will drive you nuts. Almost as bad as dating women LOL. Wilton used the GUAR EXP stamp for about 5 years from 1954 to 1959 and then went back to just dating them with the date they were released for sale. So off the top of my head.

1941-1944 no dates stamped, war effort
1945-1953 stamped with date of when released for sale. Warranty expired 5 years AFTER date.
1954-1959 stamped with GUAR EXP and the date was when the warranty expired.
1960 to present stamped with date of when released for sale. Warranty expired 5 years AFTER date.

Bluebolt, I think it is most likely from Erie Tool Works since I can't find any other markings to go by. I did see that they were the ones that bought out Hollands in 1959 I believe. Your theory is certainly plausible. I would think it would be a little easier to find some information on it if were as recent as the 50's or 60's though.

Rileysan No, it wasn't his vise. but he likes tools and he needs a good vise, I gave him a Wilton C1 last year that I re did for him. Still hasn't mounted that one too. Maybe this one will light a fire under his rear.
Shiftless I'm new to this game, only been doing it a year, thanks to this forum...lol. Ive only redone 4 or 5. I take them all apart (duh) and put them in my homemade electrolysis tank. I let them "cook" for 3-4 days depending on how they look. I take them out and wipe them down and then use a wire wheel cup to clean them up and then finish it off with a coat of boiled linseed oil. The metal just happens to look dark after the application of the BLO. I only put one coat too.
Bcom The color I used was Rustoleum Sunrise Red. The color really pops in person.

All I will post a completed photo too, probably today if I get time. I really enjoy redoing them, its fun.

OK - now that I have a Morgan, only markings are "3-1/2S" and "Morgan Vise Co Chicago", has room for pipe jaws, none present.

I have some questions - first few are

1. Model Number? - Studied the pdf on Morgan Catalogs from the Smithsonian, the bases are not at all like this one. Guessing this is earlier.
2. Year of manufacture - help!
3. Attachment bolt - assuming it has regular threads. I want to replace what is there with all thread or similar for better attachment options. Any thoughts

And - the internet finds this photo of what the whole thing probably looks like (from GJ too!)

MGM looks like standard bolt threads to me. Too bad that sleeve around the bolt is broken off, Maby you can braze something there for better fitment. As far as mounting I'd make a large washer the same size as the base of the vise out of 3/16" steel or something for the bottom of the bench.

Thank you blubolt. I'm gonna screenshot this and keep it on file.

Here is the finished work. My only complaint is the "606" in black. It was not raised letters for me to trace so my free hand looks like ****, especially trying to write sideways.

The5farrs--- that looks great! Next time you have to color in lettering and you're having problems, lay on your side on the floor and do it :willy_nil

Bcom: that Wilton date stamping method that BB just posted took a long time to get there and I finally started the thread maybe a year or two ago after finding vises stamped in 1945 when Wilton didn't start business until 1941. i thank BB for doing the database as I (we) asked everyone with a bullet to post up their stamps and i think it finally was resolved when Lug posted articles of about Wilton and Uncle Sam's business. we'd still like to find any Wilton workers that actually did the stamping to post their thoughts, but not sure that will ever happen unless several members go to retirement and nursing homes in Chicago and maybe find those old guys.

5Farrs: nice job on that big Columbian. looks like the handle might have been hit with a hammer every time it was used or did you find it rusting in the dirt? WELL DONE!!

ALL: i picked up another 6 inch Yost 34c combo vise that weighs about 150 pounds and the old owner delivered it cause I'm busy picking up about 2,000 old red bricks today. he said it was pretty heavy to lift so i mentioned he could unscrew out the dynamic all the way and even though he was the original owner he had no clue that the vise came apart. it's in great shape, but i think i'll still strip it and put on BLO if i use it and don't trade it for something else.

Thanks Drives. Yep that would be the only way to know. Finding some old dude that actually did the stamping back then. That 1945 stamp blew my mind and I didn't know what to think. Now I have to change my thinking on how old a wilton vise is:willy_nil

Here is a picture of the Rock Island 593 I just received from (terrible auction site). It’s a good solid example with not much wear or damage and no repairs evident.

I need the help of the collective wisdom of the forum here, on the top of the dynamic slide just behind where it enters the static base are the numbers 4-38. Does that mean the vise was made in 1938?

VA: i'm guessing you meant YOST 34C and not my REED 4C? i'll get a few pictures when i put it back together, but moving a few bricks today and tomorrow first.

PCAR: Rock Island date stamped (the ones they did cause not all stamped) on the dynamic slide just behind the static so i'm guessing you are correct without seeing a picture of the date stamp.

how do you like ROCK ISLAND quality cause i think they are up there fighting for the #1 spot in my book?

So far it’s hard to compare it because the other vises I have experience with are smaller 3 1/2” versions, the ubiquitous Japanese Craftsman 5180 model, and a USA Columbian D43 1/2 M3. This 4” Rock Island is a monster by comparison and the biggest I’ve seen or handled so far. I will say this: despite its much larger size and being the oldest of the three, the tolerances are by far the tightest. The clearance between the static and dynamic is extremely close yet consistent from full open to full close. I can hardly imagine how any vise could be manufactured much better or more precisely than this thing based on my close inspection. Then again I don’t have nearly the experience of others on this forum to be able to compare to the likes of Reed, Yost, Wilton, etc.

All I can say is, I’m extremely impressed by this Rock Island [emoji4]

Picked up a new to me vise yesterday. Off Craigslist. Chas Parker 436. I guess my toe of my boot is the only reference for size- I wear a size 13.

It will go into use, I'm hoping the big pipe jaws will be handy for repairing smaller hydraulic cylinders, 6-7" in size.

Congrats . That is very nice find and it is in very good shape. It is for sure pretty hefty and should serve you well.

It is funny just this morning I found a CP 434 1/2 for a reasonable price but the dynamic jaw insert is MIA . So I am debating to get it or not.

Thanks va.grouseman, it just appeared on my local craigslist, I wasn't really out looking for one. Seller had it listed for $200 and I didn't even make a different offer.
